To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that 1, CHARLES G. PALMER, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of .New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination 'VVrenches, of which the following is a specification. r This invention has as its. principal purpose to produce a tool in which a plurality of double ended fiat wrench elements are so combined that each is instantly, accessible for independent use. A further object is to so arrange .the wrench elements that when extended they will project atan angle to the handle'or bar element in the manner of an 8 type of wrench. Another object is to provide co-acting means, interengaging between the handle and wrench elements whereby when thelatter are extended, they are'held rigidly in operative position and'firmly-clamped to the handle bar. These and other analogous objects are attained by the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a materialpart of this disclosure, and in which a Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a combination wrench made in accordance with the invention, one of the elements being extended.
Figure 2 is a partial side and partial longitudinal sectional view of the same.
Figure 3 is an enlarged transverse sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Stated briefly in general terms the wrench is comprised of a flat handle bar having a wrench opening at one end and a fixed pin at the other. I 7
Flat wrench elements, preferably two in number, are secured on each side of the bar by a bolt passing through slots in their drawn taut by any preferred means, as the cam lever shown.
These wrench elements are double ended and provided on one edge with opposed hooks engageable with the pin carried by the handle bar, so that when extended in operative position and clamped by the bolt, each wrenchis substantially as rigid as one of integral construction.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, the numeral 10 designates an elongated fiat han e bar having rounded en s ll'and 12,

part held by an operator of any preferred shape, as the hexagon shown, used as a closed or box wrench.
. Nearthe extremity of the end 11 is a fixed pin 15 extending equally out from the sides of the wrench bar, the purpose of which will be later described. Also in the body of the handle bar, relatively near theend 11 is an opening 16 receptive of a bolt 17 having a fiat head 18 at one end, another head19 having a scroll cam face 20 On its inner side.
The several wrenchelements respectively 21, 22, 23'and 24 are each made of flat material with substantially parallel side edges, merging into enlarged heads each containing various sized apertures and which may be of different shapes and used for unlike purposes, as for instance the wrench opening 24 atone end of the element 2st and alligator or pipe wrench opening 24: at the other end.
Extending longitudinally through the central portion of the wrench bodies are elongated slots 25, through which the bolt 17 passes so that the wrench elements may slide freely thereon except when the bolt is stressed.
Formed with each wrench body, on one of their lateral edges, are a pair of opposed extending hooks 26 and 26 respectively adjacent the ends 21' and 24:", these hooks having their under cut or recessed portions adapted to engage with the protruding pin 15, when the wrench elements are extended, positioning them at an angle, of say thirty degrees, as shown in Figure 1, the other wrench elements being at that time located below the pin and held by the bolt as indicated.
When the wrench element is extended it is firmly clamped by operating a lever 28 having an out turned end 29 suited to be grasped, its inner end 30 being enlarged and fitted to the body of the bolt 17, as is also a cam element 31 shaped to engage the cam 20 of the 1 bolt head.
element, disengaging the hook 26 and en gaging the hook 26 with the pin, the wrench element at that time projecting at an opposite angle.
Thus there is produced a Wrench that can be used either side up, and any of its elements used with equal facility. V
VVhilevcertain preferred embodiments of this device have been-shown and described it will be understood that changes in the forms, arrangements, )roportions, sizes and details thereof may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim, is
1. A combination wrench comprising a handle, bar, a plurality of double ended said bar, each wrench element having formed thereon a pair of lntegr'al hooks, a
clamping means for said elements on which they are slidably and rotatably adjustable, and means carried by said bar engageable with the integral hooks of said elements 7 when extended at an angle whereby they are rigidly held. inadjustment.
3. A combination wrench comprising a fiat handle bar, a plurality of fiat, double ended Wrench elements disposed on each side of said bar, said elements being slotted longitudinally, a bolt in said bar passing through the mentioned slots, means for stressing said bolt, a pin fixed in one end of said bar and a pair'of hooks formed with each wrench element engageable Wltll fiilltl pm when extended. 7
4:. A comblnatlon wrench comprising a flat handlebar, fiat'wrench elements on the sides .ofsaid bar, means for adjustably clamping said Wrench elements, a pin fixed in said bar and hooks formed on the edges of said wrench elements engagea'ble with said pin-when extended at an angle for use. This specification signed and witnessed this seventeenth day of March, 1921.---'
