Description

ica.,
Application 1'ed"May' 29,
To @ZZ whom t may concern.: Y
Be it known that I, GnoRen'H. DANmLs, a
citizen of they United States, residing at tion in any field for which itv is adapted by"V `the nature or my improvements.:
An important object of my invention' ist to provide a die built-up ofinterchangeable* sections so that provision may be made for;-
'performing blanking, forming, punchingo'rfYAY shearing operations singly, or a combination of said operations successively withoutv the necessity for setting up' the die between said operations.
Another important object omy invention is to provide for the ready removal of a worn punch or die member, Without-neces-w sitating the renewal of the'entire die. p
Still another object orimportancey is' to"v provide for standardizing the'parts required in any given shop; so that there may bev kept in stock an adequate, interchangeable set or sets of such parts suited to the exigencies of the work in that'shop,` and -reqnirin'g a minimum number ofdie'blocks.
In providing for the above obj ectsaccord'- ingly Ihave devised anovelarrangement"oi die blocks which'lI term a'die chase', coinprising a male and female member each constructed andv arranged to receive inter-- changeably the constituent partsmakin'g up the punch and die required'to Iperform anygiven operation or series of operations, and-v I provide also standardized auxiliary partsfor use in filling in the spaces ofV thechase members not occupied by the punch and'die`V members proper; and-I also-provide-standardized members to ser-ve 21S-strippers guides.

embodied; Fig. 2V is a view in vertical section uponthe line 'x2- 002 of Fig. 3; Fig. Bvis a aplan viewer the female member ofthe die shown in Figs; l and 2; Fig. 4 isa perspective view uponan enlarged scale of one of tlieguide and stripper memberstaken separately; Fig. 5 is a" similar view-in perspective 'of one 'of the spacing members, showing thequoin portion ofthe' structure for retainin'g purposes; Fig. 6 is a similar viewof a `modified'torm of spacing member; Fig. 7 isa-plan viewsimilar to Fig. 3 illustrating another application of my novel principle using avcentral master block.
In the embodiment or' my invention selected lfor illustration and description to permit'readyand complete understanding of my; improvements, the part designated by the retereneecharacter l is'the male member ofa' die, and the reference character 2 designatesthe'iemale member, these parts being of any suitable structure to carry my improvements'into effect, and in the instance illustrated the parts thus designated-comprise' respectively each a chase or frame of metal, of `generally rectangular form, having a central 'opening to vreceive the operatingand spacing members constituting the sectional die proper; in accordance with my invention."
Ihavefsele'cted for illustration a sectional die 'provided lwith `punch land' die members suitable. to carryout 'the operation of punching, shearing and marking on such articles as'platel clips, the'bar constituting the work blankf from which said 'clips' are formed being" show-n in" broken lines and indicated by the-"reference character SinE Fig. 2, while the operating parts ofthe male' member are designated respectively by the reference chafraeters4;5`,'6, 7 and8,thelast mentioned being a shearing blade, while the others are punches suitablyjpositioned each to perform its-requiredoperation', these punches passing throughf a lubricating trough V33.
Inffaccordance with-myinvention I provide holding members for each of these instrume"ntalities,1 the holding members bearing respectively fthe reference numerals 14, 15g-16,17 andl 18?* Theholding'member may beA formed* in'tegrally'v withv the operating member a's in'the case of the member desig-` Hated-18, Where`that-can be done'conveniently;` orfeach punching member may be securedby 'suitable-ineanstoa holding-member" such as those designated 14 to 17 respectively, the advantage of the separate holder being that where a series of punches having standard shanks can be provided, they may be -secured interchangeably to standardized holding members, and thus the number of holding members may be considerably less than the number of the punching members proper, and a greater variety of holding members of different sizes may thus be adapted to a similar great variety of punching members.
Any suitable means' may be provided to retain the holding members in the punching chase, and as one convenient form of con'struction for this purpose I have shown a plurality of set screws 9 passing through the framework-of the chase into engagement with bars 10 arranged to distribute the pressure of the set screws over the adjacent members of the die, whether the latter are holders for the punching parts proper, vor are merely spacing members, thev latter being designated by the reference characters 11 and 12, the members 12 being arranged to receive guides 13 to `keep the parts of the die in alinement, these being of any suitable contour and being shown as cylindrical posts in the instance illustrated, their funetion being that of such well-known guides in the usual die, although it will be observed that my sectional die structure permits of changing the position of these guide members so that they may be located where they will impart the greatest rigidity to the cooperating punch and die parts while avoiding interference with the operation, and this will be readily understood when it is considered that it might be desirable to perform a punching operation at the corners occupied by these guide members in the illustration, in which event my sectional structure would permit the ready relocation of the guide members at al different portion of the die.
The guides 13 are carried by members 113 within the female chase member 2, having spacing members 11, 21, 22 and 31 interposed between them and the female die members 50 and 51the latter comprising female die members proper', while holding members therefor bear the reference characters 150 and 151.
Set screws 19 and bars 20 may be provided similar in purpose and function to the set screws 9 and bars 10 already described bove with reference to .the male die mem- The spacing members 11 and 12 are of approximately the same size in the instance illustrated, but larger members 21 and smaller members 22 may be employed as desired, and this subdivision may be carried to any extent required, the character 31 designating a series of very small members immediately surrounding the holding members 150 and 151. The filling members are preferably substantially square in cross-section as shown.
lin accordance with a notable feature of my invention., this standardization of sectional parts permits the provision of such auxiliary members as the guide and stripping members designated by the reference characters 34, comprising preferably a shank or holding portion 35 of approximately the same size as the adjacent spacing members 31, while the guide portion proper 311 for the work blank may be of any suitable size and contourl to direct the work piece 3 as it passes through the die, an overhanging portion 36 serving to strip the work when the punch is raise l have shown at 37 a series of punching members, provided with face numbers, to perform the operation of impressing any desired number or other identilication mark upon the work piece 3, these members being shown adjacent to the region ofroperation of the shear members 18, and serving to cooperate with the latter in-cutting olf the work after it. has been stamped. The spacing block 41 of somewhat shorter length is shown, to clear the cutting portion of the shear member 8, and similarly the spacing members 71 may be short in order to permit the completed work o fall freely at the region of discharge.
The member designated by the reference character 61 is a stop carried by two arms 62 secured to the discharge end of the female die chase, the member 61 being a bar placed in the path of the bar or other work blank under treatment, so that when the latter is fed forward it will strike the bar 61, but after the work is completed and the work piece falls down it will pass under the bar 61 and between the brackets 62 and be discharged freely from the die.
1 prefer to provide substantially all of the constituent members of the dies with means to aid in their retention at a uniform height within the chase membersl and 2, as shown, and any suitable form of retaining means may be employed, one such convenient form of construction being provided at 30 which designates' quoin-like projections upon the respective members, in position to enter retentivelygrooves 40 upon contiguous members, this quoin and groove arrangement being carried through the entire series of members and operating'in a manner clearly illustrated in the drawings, especially in Figure 5 which shows one of the spacing'members 21 taken separately, with the quoins 30 and grooves 40 plainly indicated. -As a modification of this arrangement, the members may have only grooves as indicated at 130 in Figure 6, which shows a modified form of spacing member bearing the reference character 121, and when thus constructed I have proposed to utilize a separate locking member 140 of suitable diameter and length to enter opposed grooves in contiguous members serving the same purpose as the quoin projections 3() already described.
Figure 7 illustrates one application of my sectional improvements, in which a relatively large central master block or spacing member 211 is `shown having openings 202 to reduce the weight, and peripheral grooves 240 to be entered by the retaining quoins 230 upon female die members 200 and corner spacing blocks 212, the spacing member 211 having on two of its sides a quoin ridge 330 to enter grooves 340 upon the female die blocks 210 contiguous therewith.
Having illustrated and described my invention thus fully and suitable means by which the same may be carried into eect, I wish it understood that I do not limit myself to the specific materials and structural forms selected for illustration and description, nor in general do I limit myself otherwise than as set forth in the claims read in connection with this specification.
`What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In combination, two complementary sectional dies each comprising a die holder, members for performing a desired operation in conjunction with the corresponding member of the other sectional die, pieces surrounding said members for filling the space between said members and said die holders whereby said members may be disposed laterally in any desired position with reference to said die holder, and means for securing said filling pieces and said members Within the die holder.
2. A sectional die comprising a plurality of chases, male punching members having holding members and means to secure the same in one of said chases with filling pieces therefor, female punching members, filling pieces and means to hold the same in said other chase, and retaining means comprising quoins and grooves upon said members respectively.
3. In combination, cooperating complementary sectional dies each comprising a die holder, a plurality of members for performing a desired operation in conjunction with those of the other die, pieces surrounding each member yfor filling the space between said member and the die holder for securing said member in any desired position, certain of said complementary filling pieces being provided with complementary guide posts and guide openings whereby the guides may be positioned as desired within said die holders.
4. In combination, a sectional die comprising a female die holder, a plurality of separate die members, pieces surrounding said members for filling the space between said members and the die holder for securing said member in any desired position, certain of said filling pieces being provided with laterally extending heads disposed adjacent the die members to act as stripping members, and means for securing the die members and the filling pieces within the die holder.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE H. DANIELS.
