The numeralIlO designates the frame of a typewriter, which may be of any desired construction or configuration, and. has mounted at the rear thereof the shifting "and passing through thereto and carries flying beneath the portion ,22 and in a plate 11 and posts 12 depending therefrom guides 13 upon the frame. These posts are reciprocated by the usual shift key levers 14.- in the ordinary manner. The plate 11 carries the typewriter carriage 15, which may be of any preferred form, and is provided with the platen-16 adapted to be shifted vertically with the carriage for upper or lower case printing.
The frame is also provided with the usual sector 17 upon which the typebars 18 are pivoted, and these typebars are actuated by the ordinary lever connections for that purpose. The sector'also has mounted thereon the usual universal-bail or bar 19 disposed tobe operated in one direction by the shoulder 2O uponthe typebar.. V
The vibratorbracket 21 is secured to'the shifting plate 11 in any desired manner, and
has the horizontal portion 22 extending rearward therefrom. The end 23 of this portlon is extended downward at an angle the pivoting arm 24- parallel horizontal plane. 7
The vibrator lever 25 is pivoted at 26 to this arm and the forwardly extending member 27 thereof has pivotally mounted at its outer end 28 the ribbon arm or holder 29 which supports the ribbon 30 in the usual manner. The arm 24 is formed with a supporting flange or lug 31 extending beneath the member 27 so as to lift the lever and ribbon when the carriage and platen are vertically shifted for upper case work.
T he verti'cal arm 32 of the vibrator lever is provided with a lateral pin 33 which extends through a slotted vertical extension 34 atthe free end of the actuating'lever 35. This lever is disposed in a horizontal plane at'the rear of the bail 19 and is mounted by a pivot 36 upon a bracket 37 secured to the side'of the typewriter frame. The pivoted end of the actuating lever is formed with a vertical end wall 38 having a lateral pivoting flange 39 at its upper end through which the pivot 86 extends. This construction provides, an elongated support for the pivot of the actuating lever. which insures easy and accurate operation thereof when the vibrator lever is in either of its shifted positions.
For the purpose of varying the length of li-d travel or throw of the actuating lever and the consequent path of vibration of the ribbon the lever is provided with an elongated slot 40 extending longitudinally thereof and adapted to receive a pin or screwed carried by the inner end of the connecting link member 42. The opposite end of this link is pivotally mounted at 43 upon the universal bail 19 in any desired manner. The slot 40 is preferably formed with a segmental wall and if desired the opposite wall thereof may be formed with an open portion extending between the end tongues e5. This provides means by which the link may be shifted into a position where it will not I actuate the lever, for instance when it is desired to perform stencil cuttlng work.

In the operation of the invention it will be seen that when the connecting link is shifted to the end of the slot inthe actuating lever nearest its pivot the greatest extent of movement will be imparted thereto and to the ribbon vibrator so as to print upon'the lower color path thereof. This arrangement of the parts is shown in Figure 2 of the drawing and when the link is 'shifted'to the opposit end of the slot the actuating lever is given its shortest. movement and the upper color path of the ribbon vibrated at the I printing point. With the link in an intermediate position or opposite the opening in the slot no motion is imparted to the actuat- -ing lever and consequently a the ribbon vibratorremains at rest as when the machine 1s used for. stencil cutting purposes. The construction and arrangement of the actuat ing lever disposed between the universal bail connection and the vibrator lever par t-lcularly adapts the invention for use with a typebar actuated reciprocating bail. and provides a simple, ei'licient and economically constructed appliance for vibrating a bichrome ribbon in varied paths. In a typewriter, a frame, a vertically shifting carriage mechanism provided with a platen, a ribbon holder arranged for movement relative to said platen, a vibrator lever for said holder, a bracket mounted to shift with said mechanism and having means to support said lever during the shifting action, a lateral projection from said vibrator lever, an actuatinglever pivoted at one end and having at its opposite end a slotted member to receive said projection, a universal bail, and a connection pivoted thereon and shiftable upon the actuating lever relative to the pivot thereof.

In a typewriter, a. frame, a vertically shifting carriage mechanism provided with a platen, a bracket mounted to shift with said mechanism and having a. forwardly extending pivoting arm, a ribbon holder, a vibrating lever therefor pivoted upon said arm, a member carried by said arm to contract with the under face of said lever, an actuating lever connected to said vibrating lever, a universal bail, and a connectio therefrom to said actuating lever.
13. In a ribbon vibrator, an actuating lever having a vertical wall at one end provided' with a pivoting flange and a vertical slotted extension atthe opposite end thereof, a pivoting bracket for one end of said lever, a vibrator lever connected to said slotted extension, a universal bail, and a connection therefrom to the actuating lever.
14. In a ribbon vibrator, an actuating lever pivoted at one end and provided with a longitudinally extending slot having a segmental wall, a universal bail, a connection therefrom shiftable along said wall, and a vibrator lever connected with the free end of said actuating lever.
15.
