Be it known that I, CHARLES SPIRO, a
. citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Bar Actions, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a typebar action leverage system typebar and key-lever whereby the leverage 1 upon the sub-lever decreases during the travel of the typebar toward the printing point, thus producing an accelerated movement at the beginning of the stroke and a subsequent steady travel under decreasing leverage as the typebar reaches a substantially vertical position.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved rocker connection for the 'sub-lever ad ustably mounted on the key- 'lever so that the degree of acceleration may i be regulated and the key lever adjusted to bring the keys into a properalined plane at the key board of the typewriter.
Other and. further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel'leatures thereof defined by the appended claims.
In the drawing-Figure 1 is an elevation of the typcbar action at rest; Fig. 2 is a similar View with the typeb'ar at the printing point, and Fig. 3 adetail of the ad ust-. able connection between the rocker and key lever.
Like numerals of reference refer to like parts in the several figures of the drawing;- The invention is here illustrated as apbracket 1 carried by the fixed support 15. The end 16 of the sub-lever is connected with the anglearm 17 of the typebar by a wire or link 18. The end 19 of the sublever is formed with an inwardly extending slot or way 20 in which a stud or pin 21 carried by the rocker 22 is disposed. This rocker is normally fixed to the key-lever 23 at an angle to the-length thereof, but is also adapted to be adjusted upon said key lever to regulate the acceleration of the typebar movement and the .alinement of the keylevers. This adjustment is effected by the slot 24: at the lower end of the rocker throughwhich the fastening screw 25 passes and is mounted in the key lever. In the operation of the invention a de pression of the key lever from the position shown in Fig. 1 to that shown in Fig. 2 carries the typebar to "the printing point and during this movement the stud upon the rocker is traveling inward through the slot in the sub-lever thus gradually reducing the amount of leverage exerted thereon. The preliminary draft of the rocker upon the sub-lever is at the point of greatest leverage and produces an accelerated travel of the typebar in leaving its position of rest. This eii'ects an easy start with a light touch at the key-lever and a continued steady movement of the typebar necessary to secure a clear and even impression at the printing point. The rocker when adjusted is rigidly held by the fastening screw and steady pin. By this means any desired degree of acceleration may be secured by shortening of lengthening the rocker and making the sub- 'lever slotted extension more or less horizontal as desired.
Difiiculty has been experienced in leveling up the key boardwlth the usual rigid nection which permits the key-levers and keys to be adjusted so, that they will lie in a proper alined plane as determined. The

This invention is notlimited to the specific details of construction herein shownand described but ,changes therein may be made Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
A single set of operative elements has been illustrated and when the invention is applied to a complete series of elements mounted upon the usual typebar segment variations in the construction of the parts I may be required to secure the objects and advantages of this invention.
Having descrlbed my invention and set forth its merits what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is I. In a typebar action, a typebar, a sub lever, a connection between said typebar and sub-lever, a key-lever, and a connection from said key lever engaging said sub-lever and mounted to traverse an arc opposite to the arc traversed by the connected end of the sub-lever and. adapted to travel toward the pivotof the latter throughout the movement ofthe typebar toward the printing a point. 2. In a typebar action, a typebar, a sublever, a connection. between said typebar 'and sub-lever, key lever, and a connection from said key lever engaging said sub-lever and mounted to traverse an arc opposlte to the arc traversed by the connected end of the sub-lever, said arcs being in closest relation when the typebar is at the V printing point.
3. In a typebar action, a typebar, a sublevcr, a connection between said typebar and sub-lever, a key lever, and a connection from said key lever engaging said sub-lever and mounted to traverse an arc opposite to the arc traversed by the connected end of the sub-lever, said arcs continuously approaching each other throughout the movement of the typebar toward the printing point.
4. In a typebar action, a typebar, a sublever, a connection between said typebar and sub-lever, a key-lever, a connection between said key-lever and sub-lever adapt-- ed to produce an initial accelerated movement of said typebar and a subsequent travel under pressure to the printingpoint,
and means for regulating the degree of such acceleration.
5. In a typebar action, a typebar, asublever, a connection between said typebar and sub-lever, a key-lever, and a fixed.

8. In a typebar action, a typebar, an angular sub-lever connected therewith and having a slotted arm, akey-lever, and a rocker mounted thereon and having a member disposed in the slot of said arm.
9. In a typebar action, a typebar,-an angular sub-lever connected therewith and having a slotted arm, a key-lever, and a rocker adjustably mounted thereon and having a lateral projection disposed in the slot of said arm.
.10. In a typebar action, a typebar, an angular sub-lever connected therewith, a keylever, a fixed rocker mounted thereon at an angle thereto, and a sliding connection between said rocker and sub-lever.
11. In a typebar action, a typebar, an angular sub-lever connected therewith, a keylever, a rocker mounted thereon at an angle thereto, a sliding connection between said rocker and sub-lever, and a sliding connection between said rocker and key-lever to permit vertical adjustment thereon.
12. In a typebar action, a typebar, an angular sub-lever connected therewith and having a slotted depending arm, a key-lever, and an angularly disposed rocker mounted thereon and having a stud disposed within said slotted arm.
13. In a typebar action, a typebar, an an gular sub-lever connected therewith and having a slotted arm,-a key-lever, a rocker connected to said arm and providedwith a slot at its lower portion, and fastening means carriedby the key-lever and-extending through said slot.
