T his invention relates to improvements in typewriting machines, and more particularly to ribbon vibrating means for such machine he invention has for its objects to provide means of simple, light and inexpensive construction whereby the ribbon guide may be given different lengths of threw to adapt the machine for use with a bichrome ribbon and whereby the ribbon guide may be rendered inactive to adapt the machine for making stencils; to provide bichrome ribbon vibrating mechanism insuring quick and accurate movements of the ribbon and avoiding bleeding; to provide efficient ribbon vibratin means of the type wherein the ribbon guide par-takes of case-shi t movements of the platen of the machine constructed to insure equal vibratory movements of the ribbon in upper and lower case writing; and to provide ribbon vibrating mechanism particularly adapted for use in a low and compact portable typewriting machine.
To the foregoing and other ends, which will appear from the following description in detail of the preferredembodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawings, the in vention consists in the combinations of parts, arrangements of devices, and features of con stru'ction hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

Only so much of the machine as is necessary for a full ul'lderstanding of the construction, operation and advantages of the improved means for vibrating the ribbon at the key strokes and rendering the ribbon inactive when writing stencils has been shown and will be described.
The main frame of the machine comprises a front wall 1, a rear wall 2, side walls 3, and an intermediate transverse partition wall 4% connecting the side walls a short distance forward of the rear wall, said partition wall lying in an upwardly and rearwardly inclined plane with its lower edge above the level of the lower edges of the outer frame walls. An upwardly and rearwardly inclined type bar segment 5 is held against the front face of the partition wall intermediate the ends of said wall, and a key lever fulcrum member 6 is held to the rear face of said wall and is formed with a pair of rearwardly and downwardly extending 'arms 7. The type bars 8 are pivoted in the segment slotscn a pivot wire 5, and the heads thereof are normally supported on a curved rest 9 supported in an inclined plane by brackets held to the main frame walls 3, said rest and segment supporting the type bars in upwardly and downwardly and rearwardly inclined plane perpendicular to the plane of wall 4, withits forward edge normally closely adjacent the upper edge of said wall, and lies entirely to the rear of the plane of the segment. A rearwardly tiltedplaten carriage 12 is mounted on the bed on suitable anti-friction hearings to travel transversely of the machine and shift up and down with the bed. A platen 13 is journalled on the carriage and lies above and in rear of the type bar pivots in position to receive impacts of types on the type bars on its upper front quarter. A pair of guide members 14 connected by a brace rod 15 are rigidly held to the bed to extend downward and forward between the back and partition walls of the frame between a pair of guide members 16 held to the main frame side walls, in inclined position. The sets of guide members are, provided with suitable complementary races for ball bearings 18 and guide the bed and carriage to shift in a plane parallel with the planes of wall 4 and segment 5.
A rock shaft 19 is journall-ed on the frame walls 3, between walls 2 and 4 and behind guides 14 and is provided with a pair of upwardly and forwardly extending rock arms provided with outwardly extending .studs 21 at their forward ends. The studs 21 are engaged in the forked rear ends of a pair of shift key levers 22 and in slots 23 in the guide iii-embers 14, so that when either shift lever is actuated the carriage and bed will be shifted through the rockin of the shift torsion frame (con prising shaft 19, arms 20 and studs 21). The shift levers are pivoted on horizontal pivot screws 24, supported on brackets 10, and extend through slots 25 in wall 4. The normal position of the shift frame (con'iprising bed 11, guides 1'4 and rod 15) is determined by the lower case stops 26 and 27 respectively on guides 14 and brackets-28 held to frame walls 3. The upper case position of the shit frame is determined by the upper case steps 29 and 30 respectively on the guides 14 and brackets 28. Steps 27 and 29 are adjustable.
The action for operating each individual type bar comprises a key lever 31 pivoted on a pivot rod 32 in fulcrum member 6 and extending under wall 4 and to the front portion of the main frame, a bell-crank lever pivoted in a horizontal segment 34 in the main frame, links 35 and 36 connecting the bell-crank lever with the key lever and type bar, respectively, and a return spring 31 connected with the key lever and the anchor bar 17 which is supported on brackets 28 forward of the plane of wall 4 antbelow the level. of the lower edge of said Well. The shift to on frame preferably also is made to sei is as a counterbalz-incing frame for the shift frame and parts shifting there with connecting the lower ends of counterbalancing springs 39 with lugs 40 on the rock arms 20, the upper ends of the springs being connected with lugs 41 on brackets The ribbon guide lies back of a type bar guide 43, which is secured by screws at its lower end to the front faee of wall 4 above the central part of the segment and extends upwardly and rearwardly in front of the, bed and carriage in an inclined plane parallel with the plane in which the platen shifts; Ribbon guide 42 is slidably guided on the type bar guide to shift up and down in a plane parallel with the plane of shift of the platen by three guide lingers 44 on said ribbon guide overlapping the front face of the type guide. The type and ribbon guides shown are of the same form as those employed in the Coronafour machine. The novel ribbon guide vibrating and silencing means will now be described.
A sheet metal ribbon-guide reciprocating and snpporting lever 45 extends transversely of the machine in front of the base plate of the platen carriage from a point adjacentthe left hand end of the carriage bed 11 to a point back of the middle portion of the ribbon guide 42 and is provided at its inner end with a horizontal slot 46 through which ontends the shank of a headed stud 4? fixed to the guide and extending rearward with its head behind the slotted or forked end of the lever. The main flat body portion of a sheet metal bracket 48 is secured at its rear against the bottom face of carriage bed 11 by screws 49 andextends forward and upward over frame wall 4 between the type guide and the left hand side of the machine. This bracket is formed with a pair of foreand-aft spaced upwardly and rearwardly extending guide lingers 50 at its left hand end between which the left hand end of lever 45 is guided to vibrate in an oblique plane parallel with the plane of wall 4, lever being pivotally held approximately midway its ends by ashouldered pivot screw 51 against the broad fiat front face of an arm 52 bent upward from the forward edge of 48 at the right hand e'nd or" the The arm 52 lies fiatwise' in a p ane with the plane of wall 4 and screw 51 is threaded in said bracket arm perpendicular to the plane of the bracket arm.
The inner arm of lever 45 is formed with a projection 53 on its lower edge normally resting on a stop finger 54 projecting inwardly from the right hand end of bracket arm 52 and bent forward llatwise under the lever to limit downward swingi of the inner end of the lever and adapt the lever to support slidable ribbon ide in a predete mined nor-' mal relation to the plate in wh eh a ribbon threaded through the guide will lie below the printing point indicated by arrow l 1). The stop finger 54 bendable up and down by a suitable tool to adjust the nor l position of the ribbon guide. The left haor outer arm of lever 45 is forn'ied between the guide-fingers and the pivot with an upwardly bowed arcuate slot 55 eritendin lengthwirrie of the lever, and with a transverse s 5 extending upward from thelower edge of the lever to the middle of slot 55.
A reciprocatory vibrator for lever ex tends diagonally downward and forward in front of bracket 48 and frame wall at thleft hand side of the system of pe bars fr a point approximately level with the forward edge of the carriage base plate to a point approximately level with the lower edge of wall 4:. This vibrator comprises an upper section 57 and a lower section 58 adj ustably but rigid ly connected at their adjacent ends by a pair of fastening screws 59 in such manner that the vibrator may be lengthened or shortened. The vibrator is formed of sheet metal and the section 57 lies fiatwise in a plane extending transversely of the machine, while section 58 lies flatwise in a plane extending tore a of the machine and formed with an. inwardly extending lug 62 lying tlatwise behind the lower end of section 57. The shanks of the clamping screws 59 extend rearward through slots 60 in section 57 (which extend longitudinally of said section) and are screwed in threaded apertures 61 in lug; 62 to firmly lock the two sections of the vibrator in desired endwise adjusted re ation with each other. T he vibrator 5758 is guided to vibrate endwise in an upwardly and rearwardly inclined path, and is supported to partake of case shift novements ot' the platen, as hereinafter described.
The upper section 57 of the vibrator pro vided with adjustable bichrome and stencil control means cooperating with slots 55 and 56 to operati.vely connect the vibrator with the left hand arm of lever 45 at either of two points located different distances from the fulcrum screw 51 of the lover, or to break the operating connection between the vibrator and lever;which means will now be described. A spring steel connector member 63 has a rearwardly ofi set pivot portion 63 at its lower end pivotally held against the front face of section 57 of the vibrator by a oi ot screw 64, threaded into an aperture 65 in saidsection about midway the ends of the section, and said connector is formed with a linger piece 63 at its upper end forward of and above lever 45 by means of which the connector may be flexed rearwardly and swung sidewise. Just below the tinge piece, the connector member is provided with a rearwardly and downwardly exteiulin, projection preterably comprising, as shown, a headed stub 66, the head of which is located behind lever 45, and theshank of which norn'ially extends through slot 55 in the lever and has a reduced -ldn'ward end portion extending; through member 63 and peeueil down to secure the s id in place. The shank o1? the stud preferably has a snug sliding lit in slot 55.
The upper end oi? section 51 is widen-ad transversely of the machine and is'iormed with an integral upwardly and forwardly cxtending yoke through which connector 63 extends. The rear edge of the transverse member of yoke 5'? is formed vith a central locking notch 67 adapted to receive connector 63 to lock the same against swinging movement with the shank of stud 66 opposite the upper end. of slot 56, this being the adjustment of the connector employed when it is desired to make stencils. In the preferred embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawings, shaft 72 is rocked in a direction to depress or pull down the vibrator, upon tne down stroke of any character key, through the medium of rock arm 83. Arm 83 is preferably formed of sheet metal and brazed on shaft 72 a little to the right of mid-length of the shaft and do pends from the shaft. This arm is adapted to be rocked rearwardly during down strokes of the keys through a connection with an arcu ate type bar-actuated universal bar 8%. The universal bar vibrates in an arcuate rec 85 in the rear face of the type bar segmen' and normally abutsthe frontwall of said recess to determine the normal position of rock arm 78 as hereinafter described) in position to be engaged and moved rearward by 86 on the type bars 8 as the type wing toward the platen 1.3. lChe right-hand rear side arm section 88 is formed at its forward end with a rigid depending; arm 94 which extends down behind rock shaft 91 to a point slightly below the level of said shaft. The universal bar and its side arms are preferably formed of sheet metal, the two sections of each side arm being; rigidly but detachably connected by a pair of fastening screws 95, and the front secioiis of the side arms being; formed integrally with the arcuate universal bar.
A substantially horizontal link 96 extendfore-and-aft of the machine under rock shaft 91, is connected at its rear end with the lower end'of arm 94L and at its front end with the lower end of rock arm 88, so that when the universal bar is moved rearwardly and downwardly said rock arm 83 is rocked rearwardly to swing the rock arm 73 (carrying the screw 74) downward. The universal bar is returned and normally held against the front wall of the segment recess 85 by a coiled spring 97 connected at its rear end with the lower end of rock arm and extending forwardly from said arm to the transverse spring-anchor bar 17 to w rich the spring is connected at its forward end. The engagement of universal bar 84 with the front wall of recess 85 limits the return rocking movement of the shaft 72 and its rock arm 73. A transverse spreader bar 98 formed on side arm section 88 abuts the inner face of side arm section 88".

The branches of slot 103 are substantially wider than the diameter of the screw shank, andthe upper edge of slot 103 and the upper end edge of slot 81 are both located above the highest point of travel of the tappet screw shank, while the lower abutment 102 is located higher than the lower end of slot 81 when positioned for engagement by the tappet screw shank. The abutments 101 and 10:2 are stepped one above the other a distance corresponding with the extent of case-shift movement of the platen, which of course is determined by the spacing between the upper and lower case types on the type bars.
The vibrator 57-58 and its connected tappet toe 99 are normally held elevated by a returning and supporting spring 10 1, which, in the preferred embodiment of the invention is connected at its lower end with the toe 99 at a point below and in rear of the pivot screw 100 so that this spring also assists the action of gravity in normally urging the toe rearwardly about its pivot to shift and hold the abutment 101 engaged under the shank of the tappet screw Yet (as shown in Figs. 1, 5, 7, 8 and 9) when the shift frame and platen are in lower case position. Spring 10a extends upward and rearward from toe 99 and is secured at its upper end to the bracket 48 attached to the shiftable carriage bed 11.
Toe 99 is automatically rocked forwardly about its pivot at the start of the upper case shifting movement of the shift frame by a fore-and-aft swinging sheet metal arm 105 depending from a horizontal pivot screw 106 threaded in an ear 107 on bracket 18. Arm 105 is formed with a short rearwardly and downwardly extending cam eege portion or shoulder 107 at its rear edge the upper part of which is engaged with the front edge of a lug 108 extendin upwardly and forwardly from the upper end of the left hand bearing bracket 76 for the rock shaft 72. At its lower end arm 105 formed with an inwardly extending finger 109 engaged behind the rear edge of tee 99. AS tho shift frame starts upward, upon actuation of either one of the shift Key levers 22, cam surface 107 rides up past lug 108 and forces pivoted cam arm 105 forward sufficiently to disengage abutment 101 from under screw 74% after a very slight rise of the shift frame (as shown in Fig. 10) so that abutment 102 will become engaged under said screw at the end of the upper case shifting movement of the shift frame. Provision is thus made for depression of the vibrator from the tappet arm during upper case typing to the same extent as in lower case typing.
The cam surface 107 is formed on the upper rear part of pendent finger 110 on arm 105 which rides on the forward edge of lug 108 throughout case shift movements of the shi t frame. Finger 110 is bendable foreand-aft. to vary the cam surface 107 to insure release of abutment 101 from under screw 74: in various adjustments of the parts, and particularly of the lower case stops, and lug 108 also may be bent up and down to assist in obtaining proper action of the pivoted cam arm. Finger 109 is bendable foree and-aft to insure proper engagement of abutment 101 under screw 74 when the shift frame is in lower case position. Depression of the vibrator by the tappet is limited by engagement of a stop finger 111 on vibrator sect-ion 57 which is arranged to strike the upper face of bracket 48 to prevent overthrow of the'vibrator and of lever 45 and the connected ribbon guide 12 on the down strokes of the keys. The finger 111 is bendable up and down to adjust the limit of down movement of the vibrator and the extent of upward throw of the ribbon guide when writing in black. Y
It will be obvious that rearward movement of the universal bar by any type bar as it approaches the platen will rock the shaft .72 and swing the arm 73 downward, and that, whether the shift frame is in upper case or lower case, the tappet screw on arm 73 will pull down the vibrator a fixed distance until it is arrested by stop 111 striking bracket 18. This fixed downward movement of the vibrator will rock the inner end of lever 4-5 upward to either of two predetermined levels relatively to the platen to lift the rib bon guide to a point where the upper half of the ribbon covers the printing point P or the lower half of the ribbon covers said printing point, according to the adjustment of connector arm 63 to position stud 66 in the left hand or right hand endof slot 55. Upon return of the type bar, spring 97 returns the universal har, rock shaft 72 and tappet arm 73 to normal position, and spring 1041 restores the vi irator to normal elevated position and returns lever 15 and the ribbon guide 12 to normal position. As there is apt to be slight lost-motion between lever 15 and stud 66, which, when the stud is adusted close to the pivot 51 of the lever for the long throw of the ribbon guide, may be sufficient to permit over-throw of the ribbon guide when writing in red, due to momentum acquired by the guide and lever, a pendent stopfinger 112 is formed on the lever 15', below its pivot, positioned to engage a pend ent finger 113 (formed onarm 52 of bracket as) simultaneously with the engagement of finger 111 on the vibrator with bracket 18 when the connector arm 63 is adjusted for the long throw of lever 45. Steps 112 and 113 are bendable transversely of the machine for purposes of adjustment and are arranged to engage only when the bichrome control l O U ing the key strokes so that the ribbon guide will remain inactive in its normal lower position to hold the ribbon away from the print-- ing point for convenience in writing stenoils. I It'wil'l be observed that the tappet screw 7 l does not engage either the upper or lower end of slot 81 in the vibrator at any time. this slot merely serving to guide the lower end of the vibrator during reciprocatory motions of the vibrator by the pull down tappet and the vibrator pull-up and supporting spring 104. The vibrator is pulled down by the tappet through the medium of the automatically set pivoted tappet toe 99 pivoted on the vibrator. It will also be observed that the tappet screw 74 has a pull-down connection only, with the tappet toe 99, said toe being drawn up by the spring 104lwhich maintains either the abutment 101 or the abutment 102 engaged under the shank of tappet screw 74, depending upon the case position of the shift frame.
The angle and throw of arm 73 is such that the screw 74 moves slightly forward during downward swinging movements of said arm, and this movement of the screw assists the pull of spring 10 l'in maintaining abutment 101 engaged under the screw during lower case typing. Disengagement of abutment 101 from screw 74 when shifting to upper case is facilitated by the gradual merging of the abutment with the front wall of the pendent branch of slot 103, as shown. In Fig. 10 of the drawings the abutment 101 is shown shifted forward from under screw 7% by cam arm 105 after a minute rise of the shift frame, while in Fig. 11 the abutment 102 is shown engaged under said screw by the full upper case movement of the shift frame.
The ribbon vibrating means is so constructed as to be positive and accurate in operation and is compactly arranged in a manner particularly adapted for use in a low or flat machine of the three-quarter strike class.
The universal bar 84 is provided with a rigid tappet or shoe 114 on its left hand side bar section 88 (as shown in Fig. 7) for actuating an escapement mechanism, not shown, for the platen carriage.
l/Vhat we claim is:
1. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a main frame, a. platen, key operated .L I a; type bars, an up and do esciha; "g tappet mounted on the main frame independently of the universal bar, a connection between said tappet ad universal bar for swinging the tappet downward on the printing strokes of the type bars, spring supported means movable downwardly by the tappet against the tension of the supporting spring on the printing strokes of the type bars, a member carried by said spring supported means to move up and down therewith and manually adjustable laterally relatively thereto, a two-arm lever fulcrumed for up and down swinging of its arms, means forming a pin and slot connec tion between said member and one arm of said lever for establishing push and pull connections between said member and lever at different distances from the lever fulcrum. by lateral adjustments of the member, and a ribbon guide connected with the other arm of the lever.
2. In a typewriting machine, a main frame, a platen, a shift frame for the platen, a ribbon guide vibratable up and down to cause a ribbon to cover and uncover the printing point on the platen, a lever fulcrumed intermediate its ends on the shift frame to rock up and down, means connecting one arm of the lever with the guide, a vibrator connected with the other arm of said lever, a. vibrator elevating and supporting spring connecting the vibrator with the shift frame, key-operated means for shifting the shift frame upwardly from a lower case position to an upper case position, a tappet mounted on the main frame to vibrate up and down, a spring normally holding the tappet elevated, means controlled by case-changing movements ofthe shift frame for establishing a different pull-down connection between the vibrator and said tappet for each case position of the shift frame to equalize the action of the tappet on the vibrator, and means operable from the character keys of the machine for imparting downward movement to the tappet when a character key is depressed.
3. In a typwriting machine, a platen, a rib bon guide vibratable up and down to cause a ribbon to cover and uncover the printing point, a lever fulcrumed intermediate its ends to rock up and down, means connecting one arm of the lever with the guide, a longitudinal slot in the other arm of the lever, an up and down vibratable vibrator, a vibrator elevating and supporting spring, means mounted on said vibrator and engaged in said slot and manually adjustable laterally relatively to the vibrator to vary the point of engagement thereof with the lever longitudinally of the slot, a tappet mounted to vibrate up and down associated with the vibrator to impart downward movement to the vibrator upon downward movement of the tappet, means whereby the vibrator is guided to move up and down in a predetermined patina spring normally holding the tappet lifted, and character-key-operated means for imparting downward movement to the tappet upon depression of a character key.
4. A typewriting machine as claimed in claim 41', in which the bracket is formed with an up and down adjustable finger engageable by the inner arm of the lever to limitupward throw ofthe vibrator and downward throw of the guide, and in which the vibrator is formed with an adjustable finger engageable with the bracket to limit downward throw of the vibrator and is also formed with a pair of adjustable fingers engageable by the connector for limiting the pivotal throw of the connector.
