To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN BULGAOH, a citizen of Poland, residing at Union City, in the county of Naugatuck and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

The main object of this invention is to provide a box or safe for the safekeeping of valuables, such as jewels, money, etc.

Another object is the provision of such a box which may be opened only by one acquainted with the proper manipulation of the box, and which requires no key for openin the same.

The above and other objects will become apparent in the description below, in which characters of reference refer to like-named parts in the drawings.

Referring briefly to the drawings, Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my box, looking toward the under side thereof.

Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the box with the cover in raised position, partly in section.

Fig. 3 is a plan View of the under side of the box with the lower panel removed.

Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view taken on the plane 4-4 of Fig. 3.

Fig. 5 is a crosssectional view taken on the plane 5-5 of Fig. 3.

Fig. 6 is an enlarged fragmentary perspective view of the forward end of one of the drawers of the box.

Fig. 7 is an enlarged fragmentary perspective view of the front panel and its support.

Referring now in detail to the drawings, the numeral 1 represents the box generally, having a cover 2 hingedly attached thereto. The front panel 3 is vertically slidable, as will presently become apparent. The box rests upon legs or feet 4, 5, 6, and 7. Folding brackets 8 unite the cover 2 to the box, and bosses 9, seated upon springs, not shown, urge said cover upward when the same is closed. A frame 10 is attached by means of hinges 13 to the under side of the cover 2, and contains a mirror 11. Slots 12 are provided in the cover and in the box for the reception of the folding brackets 8 when the box is closed. A handle 14 is provided on the lower edge of the frame 10 so that the same may be withdrawn partly from said cover and rested upon its lower edge upon the forward part of the box.

Specification of Letters Patent.

Patented Jan. 3, 1922 The box is divided into two horizontal compartments 1 1 and 15. The upper compartment 14 is subdivided into a plurality of recesses 16 having removable covers. The 6 lower compartment 15 contains two slidable drawers 18. The forward edge of the cover 2 is provided with hooks 19 adapted to enter slots 20 in the forward edge ofthe box when the cover is in closed position.

In the lower portion of the box, resting upon the outer edges of the floor or panel 10, are slidable members 24, 26, 29, and 50. The forward end of the member 24 is provided with a recess or hole 23 adapted to receive the lower extremity of a pin or finger 21 pivotally attached at 22 to the side frame of the box. The upper end of said pin extends horizontally along the greater part of the width of the box, in the form of a rod. When the cover 2 is closed, this rod is engaged by the hooks 19. The mannor. of severing this engagement will presently become apparent.

The member 50, lying in the front of the 8 box, is provided with slots 51 through which project pins 52 extending from the panel 40; thus the member 50 is longitudinally slidable. Similarly, the member 24 has slots 25 and pins 25 extending therethrough; the member 26 has slots 27 and pins 28; and the member 29 has slots 30 and pins 31. The member 2 1 has its forward end 2 1* raised so as to allow the member 50 to pass thereunder. Now, where the memher 24L contacts with the member 26, the latter is provided with a shoulder 29*; I where the member 26 contacts with the b member 29, the latter is provided with a shoulder 32. Springs 60 engaging slots 61 normally retain the members 24 and 26 in the locked position shown in Fig. 3. In order to open the box, or rather, to lift the cover 2, the following procedure is neces sary. First, however, it is necessary to mention that the leg 6 is rigid with the end of the member 50; the leg 7 with the end of the member 2 1; the leg 4: with the end of the member 26; and the leg 5 with the end of the member 29; said legs extend through slots 35, 36, 33, and 3d, respectively, and are laterally slidable in said slots. To

repeat, in order to lift the cover 2, it is first necessary to move the leg 5 in the direction'of the arrow A, Fig. 3. Then the leg 4: is moved in the direction of the arrow B, the leg 6 in the direction of the arrow x also.

D and finally the leg 7 in the direction of the arrow C. The latter movement releases the lower extremity of the pin 21 from engagement with the hole 23, and at the same time trips the pin 21 out of engagement with the hooks l9, whence the cover 2 opens or rises by virtue of the pressure of the bosses 9.

The member is provided with locking means for the drawers 18, as shown in part in Fig. 6; said figure shows the locking means for one drawer only, another such means being provided for the other drawer A vertical bracket 57 is attached to said member 50, the upper end thereof being provided with a short extension 56 adapted to engage a vertical groove in the side of said drawer. It is apparent that when the member 50 is moved in the direction of the arrow D, the drawers are locked against forward motion, and vice versa.

The front panel 3 is provided on its inner side with a slot engageable by a hook 49 on the end of a lever 46 pivotally mounted at 45, a spring 48 normally urging said hook into said engagement. A horizontal bracket 44 extends from the member 29 and engages the top of said lever. It is also apparent that when the member 29 is moved in the direction of the arrow A the engagement of the hook 49 and said slot is discontinued, allowing the panel 3 freedom to rise. It does so rise, after the cover 2 has been lifted, by virtue of the pressure of a spring 38 surrounding a pin 89 resting upon the panel 40 and having slidable engagement with the said panel.

On the under side of the box, near the forward edge thereof, are a pair of adjacent circular recesses 43 in which are slidably mounted buttons 42 and 42. Stems 58 extend upward from said buttons and each of said stems engages a rod 59 which extends 5 rearward and is pivoted at 65. A spring 60 resting against a pin 61 is attached to said rod, and urges the forward end thereof downward, and hence the buttons 42 and 42 also downward. The rearward end of said rod is provided with a hook 62 engageable with a slot 63 in the bottom of the drawer 18. A spring 64 urges each drawer 18 normally forward. Again, it is apparent that, upon depression of either of the buttons 42 or 42, the corresponding hook 62 will disengage from the slot 63 and allow the corresponding drawer 18 to move forward.

Thus it is clear that I have provided a use ful safety box for the safekeeping of valu-' ables, which requires no key to open the same, and which may be opened only by one thoroughly acquainted with the principle thereof.

I claim:

1. A device of the class described comprising a box having a lower panel, members slidably mounted adjacent the edges of said lower panel, a cover on said box, hooks projecting from said cover, a pivoted member engageable by said hooks, said pivoted member having contact with one of said slidable members, means for allowing slidable movement of said slidable members in succession, and for preventing slidable movement of said slidable members excepting in succession, said pivoted member being releasable from said hooks upon successive slidable movement of said slidable members.

A device of the class described comprising a box having a lower panel, drawers slidably mounted in said box, releasable means for locking said drawers, members slidably mounted adjacent the edges of said lower panel, a cover on said box, hooks projecting from said cover, a pivoted member engageable bysaid hooks, said pivoted memher having contact with one of said slidable members, means for allowing slidable movement of said slidable members in succession, and for preventing slidable movement of said slidable members excepting in succession, said pivoted member being releasable from said hooks upon successive slidable movement of said slidable members.

A device of the class described co1nprising a box mounted upon legs having drawers slidably mounted therein, releasable means for locking said drawers, buttons or the like having contact with said means for releasing said drawers,1ne1nbers slidably mounted adjacent the edge of the box bottom, a cover on said box, hooks projecting from said cover, a pivoted member engageable by said hooks, said pivoted member having contact with one of said slidable members, means for allowing slidable movement of said slidable members in succession, each of said slidable members being attached to one of the legs of said box, a vertical panel slidably mounted adjacent said drawers, additional means for releasably locking said panel, said pivoted memher being releasable from said hooks upon successive movement of said slidable members, said additional means being also operable by said slidable movement to release said panels.
