Specification of Letters-Patent.

Application filed Ianuaryl, 1919. Serial 110.274,373. l
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known kthat I, THOMAS C. Senf-LING, a citizenof New York City, in the county of New York and State of N ew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising Posts, of which the following is a. specication.
This invention relates to advertising devices but its additional utility as a guide post for travel and traiiic is also evident. Froni a commercial viewpoint, its purpose is the provision of an advertising post of sucli public utility and attractiveness that municipal and other public authorities will allow it to be erected on public property, whereupon the spaces thereon not needed for street or road names and directions -to travel and traflic may be rented or otherwise profitably used. All of which will be seen l from the following description and drawings.
Figure l is a top view, and Figure 2 a side elevation with the wire screen which surrounds tlie supporting column seen partly i broken away. Figure 3 is a dianietrical vertical section of the structure broken off through the hoop.
Referring to the drawings more in detail and by reference numerals, l represents the ground or street surrounding the structure, 2 an iron hoop surrounding the base and having vertical extension partly below and partly above the surface of the ground. The hoop may be filled to a point near the top with cement or other hard substance, thus affording both interiorly and on the inner portion of its upper edge 3, support for the base 2 of the structure proper, the. base of which is designated by numeral e. Seated in the base, 4, and in a recess 5 therein is the supporting column 6.`
Since it is intended that this column as well as the glass plates or panes, 7, shall be illuminated in the night time, the column 6, will be made preferably of glass, porcelain or other translucent substance, whitened or mottled to soften the glare of the electric bulb, or lamp, 8, having vertical extension partly within an opening through the column and partly above it, within the rectangular space surrounded by the four glass panes or plates 7. Thus placed, the light illuminates both the rectangular top and the round Column of the structure. A bracket holding the lamp and its wire, 11, is shown in Figure 3, and is designated by the reference numeral 9, the supporting means be-y ing omitted in Figure 2. The illustration contemplates the use of electrical lighting; hence, the presence of the wire 11, passing underground and up within the hoopy 2, a
10. which may be made of iron or other suitable material. The member designated by the reference character lOfL is a. resilient collar on the" frame to clasp the tube, 6. The top or cover, 12, on the frame may or may not be provided with a reflector facing downward, attached to its under surface. Such a reflector would intensify the illumination of the column 6 and the plates or panes, 7, if such effect were desired. Since the column will usually be made of brittle material, the screen, 13, is provided, only fragmentary parts thereof being shown in Figure 2. The screen is attached to the base l in the shallow narrow recess la, and in the rectangular frame in the similar recess 15 or the top may simply be guided by the collar 10a. The base of the rectangular frame, lO, is recessed at 16, and into that recess the top of the column 6 is socketed or clasped by the collar 10a. The parts may be fastened together frictionally or otherwise. The portions, 17, of the plates or panes, 7, are designed for street names or directions for travel or traf# fic and may be colored differently, from the yother portion, 18, designed for advertising uses. The reduced portion, 19, of the base 6 rests inside the hoop 2 while the narrow 'rim or shoulder, 20, rests on the hoop.
-While I have here illustrated and del scribed a structure with round foundation (hoop), round base, round column, round screen, and rectangular top member, it is obvious that the invention admits of a variety of forms and uses, therefore I do not limit myself to the above described and illustrated forms or uses. Having thus set forth the invention, I claim as follows:
l. An advertising post comprising a translucent tubular column, the column supporting a rectangular box, the boX formed of a metallic frame and translucent panels held by the frame, each panel divided into an upper and lower section, the column frictionally bound in the box by mea-ns of :L resilient collar aroundvthetop of the colf umn.
2. An advertising post comprising it translucent tubular column, the column supporting,` e rectangular box, the box formed of a metallic frame and translucent panels held by the frame, each panel divided intoun upper sind lower section, the column frictionallybound in the boxby means of a. resilient collanaround the top of the column,
