UNHTEE STATES CLARENCE M. FLEECE, OF LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS.
COMBINED FILE AND KNIFE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 26, 1921 Serial No. 440,031.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, CLARENCE M. FLEEcE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Little Rock, in the county of Pulaski and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Files and Knives, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has as its object to provide a nail file or similar hand instrument with a knife blade so that the instrument may be employed in sharpening pencils or for various other purposes requiring the use of a cutting edge.
Another object of the invention is to provide the handle of a hand instrument with a cutting edge so located and protected that while its use will not in any way be interfered with, nevertheless in the use of the instrument itself there will be no likelihood of injury to ones hands by reason of the presence of the said cutting edge or blade.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure l is a perspective view of an instrument embodying the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction indicated by the arrows;
Fig. 3 is a similar view on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings the numeral 1 indicates in general a manicure or similar instrument such for example as a file having a fiat handle 9. which is'of a suitable metal. This handle 2 has one of its edges indicated by the numeral 3 formed with a recess indicated by the numeral 4. The said recess has a relatively narrow open side or throat 5 and is interiorly enlarged by being widened as indicated by the numeral 6 so that between the widened portion of the recess and the edge 3 of the handle 2 there are formed guard fingers 7 the ends of which are oppositely located and define the said throat 5. The inner longitudinal wall of the recess is beveled upon one or both sides, either as desired, and as indicated by the numeral 8, so as to provide a cutting edge 9 which extends opposite the throat 5 and throughoutthe entire length of the widened portion of the recess. In this manner the cutting edge 9 is spaced inwardly from the edge 3 of the handle, preferably extending substantially parallel to said edge, and it is guarded by the fingers 7 so that when the instrument is grasped by the handle 2, the hand will not come into engagement with the cutting edge 9 but will'be spaced therefrom by the said fingers 7. However, the throat 5 is of suflicient width to accommodate the end of a lead pencil so that by grasping the shank of the instrument, the cutting edge 9 may be employed in sharpening a lead pencil or otherwise performing the functions of a knife.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new is:
1. In an article of the class described, a substantially fiat sided member provided inwardly of one edge thereof with a cutting blade portion, and guard means for the blade occupying a position between the cutting edge of the blade and the said edge of the member, and having an opening opposite the blade. I
2. In an article of the class described, a relatively flat sided member formed in one edge with an interiorly enlarged recess providing a throat opening through the said edge of the member, and guard fingers located at the opposite sides of the throat, the inner wall of the recess being formed with a cutting edge.
In testimony whereof I afix my signature,
CLARENCE M. FLEECE. [n s.]
