Be it known that CHARLES B. OsnoN, a
citizen of the United States, and resident launching of a boat on an even keel from a vessel in any kind of a sea, and likewis the hoistingof a boat to the deck of a vessel.
In the drawings of one embodiment of my invention illustrated and described herein:

Referring first to Figs. 1,2, my novel construction comprises bases 1, 2, each having side members 3, 4, spaced a oart and secured by flanges 5 to thedeck 6, the bases being a suitable distance apart as desired, to accommodate thesize of the boat used,
To avoid the inconvenience and danger which have always accompanied the use of the horizontally swinging davits, I have conceived the novel plan of using igs. 1,

The davits are connected by a cross-bar 10. The swinging action of the oavits 8, F igs. 1, 2, 3, is immediately controlled, and their positions both inboard or normal, and when outboardor in use, determined by booms l1, pivoted to the davits near their upper ends and carrying, each at its; lower end, a pin or roll 12 adapted to slide in slots 13 in the opposite side members 3, 4, of the base.
The rolls 12 rest against the upper end of the slots when the davits are swung out 'i'or use, see dotted lines Fig. 3, and, same fi ure against the opposite ends ofthe slots normally or when the davits are not in use.
I, will now proceed to describe the davit operating means for launching the boat, which normally rests upon the checks 14 on deck. Secured to the bow 15 of the'boat 1130 2 4 5. is a cable 17. which asses through a block 18, over a fixed pulley 19 on the cross-bar 10, down beneath a pulley 20 slidable on a bar 21 in the standard 22, base 2, and standard 23, on the deck permit even winding of the cable thereon, the cable running therefrom about a winch 24 to which it is secured. -Whi'le the standards 22, 28, are here shown as single flat sheets of sheet steel, obviously they may be of any desired suitable configuration.
From the stern of the boat, Figs. 2, 4. 5, a cable-26 runs through a block 27 suspended likewise from the crossbar 10, thence lengthwise thereof over'the fixed pulley 19 and through the swinging block 28 down heneath a similar pulley29 on the bar 21 up and about the winch 30, with the winch 24,
on a common shaft 31 in the standards 22,23.
On the which 30, Figs. 4, 5, are the gear wheels 32 and 33. The former is adapted to and is shown as in mesh with a pinion34 on a shaft 35 mounted in the standards 22,
23, and extended through the walls- 3. 4, of

By rotation of the shaft35 and winches 24, 30, through the cranks 37 obviously the cables 17, 26, will be wound thereon or unwound therefrom, and the boat raised or lowered.

7, left hand end of the block, thewheel being positioned in a slot 80 inthe wall member and thus kept from traveling.
Obviously the positions of the pulleys 75.

The davits 8 will now be positioned outboard, dotted lines, 3, just beyond the perpendicular. From this point, the pawl 56 being now raised to permit unwinding of the cables 62, 70, the weight of the boat will swing davits to their outermost position, see Fig. 7, dotted lines and Fig. 1, their swinging movement being controlled as to speed by the foot brake 60, either with or without the use of the cranks 37, the cables 62, 70, unwinding in the meantime until the rolls 12 engage the upper ends of the slots 13, Fig. 3.
As already stated, the lateral position of the roll 7 5 relative to the pulley 72 may be adjusted at will to suit any particular case by turning the'wheel 78 which moves the block 76 and the roll 75 up or down in slot 7'7, and thus determines how far the lower ends of the booms 11 may be raised by the cables 70, 62, attached thereto and running over the pulleys 72 and of course how far outboard the upper ends of the davits 8 may extend.
After raising the pawl 36 to free the ratchet 33 and winches 24, 30, the boat may be lowered to a level with the deck (ito re- 7 ceive passengers ifdesired, and next lowered into the water and by means of the hand brake 42 these winches are controlled and permitted to rotate in the rearward or Fig. 4, left hand direction slowly unwinding the cables 17, 26, and allowing the boat to descend gradually into the water.
To raise the boat from thewater the pawl 36 is dropped into engagement with the gear 33, shaft 35 is slid inwardly until pinion 34 meshes with gear 32 and locked there by the pawl 56. Then byturning the cranks 37 to the right, Fig. 4, the cables 17, 26, are wound upon the winches 24, 30, until the boat is raised to the proper height.
Then the shaft 35 is again slid longitudinally outward, Fig. 4 downward, until pinion 34 meshes with gear 51. The cranks 37 are turned to the left, Fig. 4, winding up cables 62, 70, on the winches 48, 49, and swinging the davits 8 and booms 11 inboard until each roll 12 is positioned substantially over a pulley 7 5 when the pawl 56 is raised to free the ratchet 55 and permit unwinding of the cables 62, 70, and the davits and boat are swung inboard by the sailors, the movement of the booms being controlled by the foot brake 6Ov Thereafter the boat may be lowered into the chocks by the winches 24, 30, or by a little experience the boat may be raised from the water to such a height that when the davits are swung inboard th boat willslide naturallyinto the chocks.
By my improved construction the boat may always be swung outboard on an even keel'under such control that the men at either davit in control of the cables, are not in danger of precipitating one end of the boat into the water ahead of the other end.
Both ends of the boat will drop simultrolling means including aboom and a winch therefor, locking means onthe base for locking the boom' against backward travel, a movable stop on the base for determining the extent of outward travel of the boom, boat lowering means including a winch, and common operating means for the winches.

Boat launching apparatus comprising a base, a davit movable thereon, a boom connected with the davit and having one end slidable in said base, a stop member for the boom below the path of travel of the lower boom end to determine adjustably the distance of travel ofthe boom, a winch for moving the boom and mounted in the base, a winch for moving the davit, gears on tln winches, an operating shaft on the base hav ing a pinion, said shaft movable in its bearings to cause it to engage either winch gear, and brakes for the winches.
