Description

A. BRINCKWIANN.
( Self-Clos'i ng Faucets. X N0. 140,183, Patente dJune2-4,1873.
I Il,
hweutirr:
ALEXANDER BRINCKMANN, or NEWYORK, N. i'.
IMPROVEMENT EN SELF=CLOSING FAUCETS.
Specification forming part-of Letters Patent No. Hdth, Adated June 24,1873; application led Novembf 9, 1872.
Toall whom it mayponcern:
Be it knownthat; ALEXANDER Benven- MANN, of the city, cmmty, and State of N ew York, have invented anew and Improved Self -Closing Faucet, of which the followingV is a specification: l
Figure l representsv a vertical central section of my improved Yself-closing faucet. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same on the line c c, Fig. 1.- Fig. 3 is a top View of the same when the upper button has been removed.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
This invention relates to improvements on faucets of the kind having swivel dischargetubes, which tubes, when in one position, are
closed and stop the outflow of Water, while in the other position they communicate with the water-supply, are open, and allow the wa- .The latter has a discharge-opening, a, at its upper part. `Vhen the tube B is turned to communicate with said opening a the water will flow out, but when the tube B is turned aside its holder C will close the aperture c and prevent the outow of water; All this is substantially as in ordinary faucets of similar kind, as is also the button l), which is fastened upon the end of the stem A to keep the tube Cin place. I form on the stern A an enlarged bowl, E, which is closed by an annular screwcap, F, and embraces and contains the lower part of the pipe (l. A pipe, G, projects from the bowl E, and communicates with a branch of the water-supply pipe, wl1ich is larger in diameter than the other branch of the same pipe leading to the lower end .of A, as is indiand with the same the tube C, so as to close the aperture@ and prevent the outflow of water.
Whenever it lis desired to have the Water .flow out, the tube B is turned by hand vto open the aperture a, and is held so as long as necessary 5 but as soon as the -tn'be Bis let' go the pressure of water against the piston H immediately causes the tube C, with B, to swing closed. Thus the faucet is automatically closed.
All overflow of water will be prevented at night, and otherwise by carelessness, as the water cannotilow unless the faucet is held open.
4In order to prevent the tube 0,1While swinging from one position to the other, from coming to a dead stop by meeting rigid resistance, and from thereby receiving a shock and producing unnecessary noise, I apply a projecting-tooth, e, to the upper end of the tube C, and cause it to bear against a spiral spring, which is -contained within an annular chamber, g, at the upper part of the stem A, in manner clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3. This spring prevents all shocksandviolent motion.
Having thus described-my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of the tube C, the waterpressed piston H, rod b, and cam d, arranged and applied 4for the purpose of rotating said tube, as set forth.
