IMPROVEMENT IN BASIN-FAUCETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 166,339, dated August 3, 1875; application filed May 17, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. BUSSEY, of San Francisco city and county, State of California, have invented an Improved Water-Tight Joint for Cocks and Faucets; and 1 do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are sufiicient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it'most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention or improvement without further invention or experiment.
My invention relates to that class of cocks, valves, and faucets in which a swivel-shell, which surrounds the water-pipe, must be turned to a certain point in order to connect the water-passages and allow the water to es cape, and which must be turned so as'to disconnect the passages in order to cut off the escape of water.
My invention is especially applicable to basin-faucets, in which connection I have represented it in the present case.
My improvement consists in the'employment of india-rubber to form the inside portion of the shell, and'move against the water-pipe, as is more fully described in the following specification.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my fancet.
A is the hollow stem of the faucet, which is secured to the wash-stand or other support in the ordinary manner, and to the lower end of which the water-pipe is attached, so that it forms a continuation of the water-pipe. The upper end B of this hollow stem forms the spindle, around which the swivel-head is fitted, and c is the hole or passage in the end B, through which the water passes out, the upper end of the stem being solid. The head or swivel portion, to which the nozzle J is attached, consists of an outer metallic or other shell, E, inside of which 1 compress an indiarubber cylinder or block, D, so that the cylinder or block will fit tightly in it. A hole passes through the center of the india-rubber cylinder or block D, and this hole is large enough to permit the upper end of the waterpipe or hollow stem B to pass through and fit tightly in it. The shell E, with its indiarubber interior, fits down over the upper end B, and rests upon the flange h, and a screwcap, I, screws upon the upper end of the stem, so as to hold the shell in place. The nozzle J is screwed into a hole in the metallic shell or case E of the swivel-head opposite the hole 0 in the water pipe or stem, and a hole is made in the india-rubber block opposite the nozzle J, so that when the swivel head or shell is turned so as to bring the passage'through the india-rubber .block opposite the passage in the water-pipe, the water will pass out into the nozzle, and by turning the head, so as to disconnect the holes, the water is cut off.
By the use of the block of india-rubber, I provide a perfectly tight joint that will not leak. The frictional surface of the india-rubher will be lubricated by the water, so as to make it work quite easy, while there will be no wear of any consequence either on therubher or on the pipe.
The same arrangement can be applied to cocks and valves, and other moving joints, where it is desired to make a steam, water, or gas tight joint.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A swivel-head for gas, water, and steam cocks, consisting of an india-rubber block, D,
surrounded by a metallic shell, E, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The swivel metallic shell E, with its filling D of india-rubber, and having the nozzle J,
when the Water-pipe B passes through a hole in the india-rubber filling, and has a passage, 0, connecting the interior of the water-pipe with the nozzle J, substantially as and for the purpose above described.
