Patented Dec. 27, 1921;
Application filed December 22,1919, Serial No. 346,641. Renewed May 14, 1921. Serial No. 469,481.'
To all whom it may concern):
Be it known that I, SAMUEL G. SHAriRo, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New,York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Use in Attaching Heels to, Shoes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others sln'lled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to devices for use in attaching heels to shoes, and more articularly to devices employed in attac ing high heels, of the French or Cuban style, to womens shoes.
It is an object of. the invention to provide an improved and simplified unitary device wherewith the attachment of heels of the character mentioned is facilitated and expedited.
Another object is to provide a compact and durable apparatus for the purpose described and which is capable of adjustment for use with different styles of heels.
Other objects and advantages will be in part obvious and in part noted hereinafter in connection with the following description of the accompanying drawings which illustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention, and in which- Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective of the device and r Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the device is shown as comprising a fiat supporting base 1 having rigidly aiiixed thereto an upright backing block 2 at one end and a clamping holder 3 at the other end. The base 1 is preferably of triangular shape with the block 2 located adjacent one apex and the clamp 3 extending between the other two apices.
Block 2 is preferably of metal or other durable material and is shaped to provide a flat top 4 and a narrowing body 5 of a size to fit within the heel portion of an inverted shoe ready to have a heel attached thereto. As above indicated, the device is particularly designed for use in applying high heels, and especially metal heels of the character shown in my copending applications, Serial Nos. 304,129, 306,456, 321,084, 325,249, and 343,27 8.
In order to serve as a rigid backing for the shoe during attachment of the heel, and
tion of the nails'or similar elements through 1 the shoe bottom, the block 1 is. providedaround its'topedgeIwith a plurality of recesses 6 located to receive the nails as driven without bending or clenching. After this operation, the shoe is removed from block 1 and transferred to the clamp 3, which latterincludes a rigid upright curved plate 7 having an open side 9 and shaped, in general, to fit about the rear and sides of the heel previously attached. The second clamp.- ing element of device 3 is an adjustable plate 8 supported on base 1 and mounted to fit and slide on parallel guides 14 preferably integral with the base. A studlO is secured to plate 7 and has a threaded end 11 projecting through plate 8 witha manipulatable nut 12 thereon, whereby plate 8 may be drawn toward the open side of plate 7 to grip securely therebetween the previously attached shoe heel. t
It will be'noted that the configuration of plates 7 and 8 and the relative adjustment thereof, allows the reception therebetween of high heelseither of the French or Cuban guides 14, it will be apparent that the shoe heels may be expeditiously positioned and firmly held in the clamp. While thus gripped the ends of the nails or the like driven in on the block 2 may be bent and clenched with the usual tools. 7
For convenience base 1 also is provided with grooves 13 along the sides to hold the shoemakers tools. a
The apparatus as thus described constitutes aunitary, compact, portable and especiallyeflicient adjunct for the purposes set forth. The device is relatively light in weight, strong anddurable, and by its use the attachment of heels to shoes is rendered easy and quick. The clamp 3 is of especial advantage, also, in that it acts to receive and grip heels of varying sizes and shapes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. In a device of the character described, in combination, a supporting base, an up,- standing metal block thereon having an end to fit in an inverted shoe and having spaced kins recesses around its upper edge to receive nails penetrating said shoe, and an upstanding adjustable clamp on said base to receive a shoe heel.
2. In apparatus of the character described, in combination, a supporting base having integral guides thereon, a rigid curved plate upstanding therefrom and laterally open in one direction, a complementary upstanding.
member opposite the open side of said plate, and a stud secured to said plate having a threaded end projecting through the com I plementary member with a manipulatable nut thereon whereby said complementary member may be drawn toward the open side of said rigid curved plate on said guides, said rigid plate and said complementary member being shapedso that the relative adjustment thereof allows the reception of a shoe heel therebetween.
In witness whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL Gr. SHAPIRO. Witnesses: g
