To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Aueusr J OHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grate-Bars;
' and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description'of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in grate bars especially adapted for furnaces in which is burnt sawdust, wood shavings, slab wood and mill refuse and has for one of its objects the provision of a device of this character, which is light in weight so that the same can be readily handled, and one which will not readily warp or buckle from intense heat which is frequent when burning fuel of the above stated character.
Another object of this invention is the provision of means which will eflicieutly support the bar and prevent or obviate any danger of the bar falling when being cleaned of clinkers, and is also iSO constructed that the tools used in cleaning will not catch or strike against the end of the bar, further insuring against the danger of unseating the bar during cleaning processes.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a grate bar of the above stated character, which shall be simple, durable,and efiicient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

The top faces of the elements 3 are flush with the top faces of the ribs 2 to provide a substantially smooth or even top surface to the grate bar. Spacing lugs 4 are formed upon the outer ribs 2 in ali'nement with the connecting elements 3 and are of substantially the same shape and outline as the connecting ribs 3. V
The top faces at the ends of the ribs 2 are inclined as shown at 5 so as to prevent cleaning tools from catching on the ends of the ribs when cleaning the grate bar of ashes. The ribs 2 decrease in thickness from their upper faces toward their lower faces so asto decrease the amount of material used in constructing the bar thus making the same of a lighter weight. The bearings 7 are provided with inclined faces 12 to conform to the walls of the notches 10 so that the grate bar is efficiently supportedand locked in place against longitudinal movement within the furnace'8 thereby obviating the danger of the grate bar falling when clinkers are being removed therefrom. 1
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it
