BOXING-GLOVE COVER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 2'7, 1921.
Application filed November 20, 1920. Serial No. 425,428.
To all who mv it may concern:
Be it known that I, ZACK GILL OLDHAM, a citizen of the United'States, and a resident of Urbana, county of Champaign, and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Boxing-Glove Cover; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals refer to like parts.
This invention relates to a boxing glove, and the object thereof is to eliminate the wrinkles which have heretofore necessarily been incorporated in boxing gloves because of their peculiar shape.
In the usual method of making and forming boxing gloves, the fiat piece of leather is split or crimped about the edge or tucked so as to obtain the desired shape, thereby producing wrinkles or seams, which during use become hardened and sharp from perspiration. In this condition, unless softened by cleansing and oiling, they are dangerous to the adversary, in that they chafe, scratch, and may even cut through the skin. It is the object of this invention to eliminate such wrinkles or seams by forming the leather covering on the back of the glove in the de-' sired shape, whereby there will be no stitching, crimping or overlapping of the edge, and securing the back of the glove to the palm covering. by a strip.
The full nature of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the finished glove. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the palm of the glove. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the back of the glove mounted on a stretching form. Fig. 4; is an end elevation of the back of the glove mounted on a stretching form.
In the drawings there is shown a boxing glove having a palm portion 10, wrist band 11 adapted to be drawn together about the.
wrist by the lacing 12, a thumb portion 13, back covering 14 and an intermediate connecting strip 15.
The glove is formed by stretching the back portion 14 and thumb portion 13 over a wooden form or last 16 having the shape of the back and thumb portions of the boxing glove. The leather is then treated so as to be soft and pliable and is stretched firmly and tightly about the form, as shown in Fig. 3, and tacked about the edges so as to secure it in stretched condition thereon. It
is allowed to remain upon the mold over night, or sufliciently long to allow it to become shaped and dried when it is removed, and the stretched and wrinkled edge Where it is tacked is cut oflf at the dotted line 17 The covering 14 is then of the desired shape for receiving the padding and being secured to the palm portion 10.
The securing strip 15, which has been cut or formed in a similar manner to the desired shape, is then stitched to the edge 17 of the cover 14 with an inverted seam so as to preserve the unbroken surface, and to the strip 15 is stitched the palm portion 10' in the same manner.
The same results may be accomplished by forming both the cover portion 14 and the palm portion 10 on a suitable form in the same manner as above described, whereby the strip 15 may be eliminated and the palm portion 10 stitched directly to the backsaid palm portion for covering their point of joinder.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto affixed my signature.
ZACK GILL OLDHAM.
