To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it-known that I, SIDNEY C. HOWARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Oil Control and Oil-Feeder, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to internal combustion engines, and more particularly to the lubricating system thereof, it being the primary object of the invention to provide novelmeans for feeding lubricating oil to the crank casing of the motor, whereby the lubricating oil is maintained at predetermined levels.
A. further object of the invention is to provide an operatin means in connection with the usual thrott e rod so that the sup@ ply of oil to the crank casing is automatically controlled. with the movement of the throttle rod.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of means for replenishing the quantity of oil within the crank casing as the saine is being used.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the -description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The figure illustrates a sectional view through the elements of the system, and showing the' same as applied t a crank casing.
Referring-to the drawing in detail, the system is shown as applied toa crank casing 5 in which the oil level is indicated by the reference character 6, the oil level in the crank casing as shown being the desired maximum level of the oil for the eiiicient running of the motor at all times.
The system includes a supply tank 7 which is supported in any convenient location adjacent to the motor associated therewith, and as shown this tank is provided with a filling opening 8 which is closed by the plug 9 that is of a construction to insure an air-tight connection between the Specication of Letters Patent. Associated with the tank 7 is a feed tank 16 which has a threaded portion 17 to receive the threaded portion of the adjustable head 18 and through which head passes a feed pipe 19, the same being carried by the head and designed to move therewith. It is obvious that byrotating the head 17, the pipe 19 may be adjusted within the tank 16, for
'purposes to be lhereinafter more fully described.

An operating rod 23 has connection with the flange 22, the rod 23 being however connected with the usual throttle rod which controls the passage of gas through the carbureter, and which in the present drawing has been omitted, it being understood how-y ever that the operating rod 23 moves with the throttle rod to move the tube 21 with respect to the pipe 19.

. n the operation of the device, the oil level 'as shown by the drawing, if .cates the maximum quantity of oil to be maintained in the crank casing when the engine is running at its maximum speed, the controlling tube 21 is .in a position taken when the engine is at a standstill.
Assuming that the engine is started and the throttle is moved to admit gas to the engine to cause the. same to speed up, it is 'obvious that as the throttle rod moves the operating rod 23 is moved to move the controlling tube 21 to a position as indicated in dotted lines. As the oil is consumed by the engine, the oil level in the tank 16 falls, admitting air to the pipe 19 which allows t the oil within the tank 7 to ow into the tank 16 until the same closes the end of the pipe 19 within the tank, and the level of the oil Within the tank is inthe same horizontal plane, with the lower end of the i e 19. p ith the controlling tube 21, in a position as indicated by the drawing, and the en# gine running at a moderate rate of speed, the oil level within the crank casing 5 may fall to a point in the same horizontal plane with the lower end of the controlling tube 21, whereupon air will enter the tube 21 and allow a quantity of oil to How into the tank 16 and crank casing. 5, the quantity -of oil at this level being suiiicient to permit the efiioient running of the engine at a moderate rate of speed.

In an internal combustion engine havin a crankA casing, and having a throttle r controlling the passage of gas to the engine, the combination of an oil supply tank associated with the crank casing, a feed tank associated with the supply tank, and means having connection with the throttle rod and operating within the feed tank for. automatically controlling the level of oil within the crank casing.
2. In an internal combustion engine having a throttle rod controlling the passage of'gas thereto, the combination of a supply tank, a feed tank in communication with the supply tank and havingar. adjustable head, v disposed within the feed tank and carried by the adjustable head, said pipe having one end disposed within the supply tank, and means on one end of the pi e for controlling the level of oil within t e feed tank, said means being automatically ootrolled by the operation of the throttle ro 3. In 'an internal combustion engine, havi'ng a throttle rod controlling the passage of gas therethrough, the combination of a supply tank, a feed tank in communication with the sup ly tank, a pipe communicating with the tanks, a controlling tube having a iange formed exteriorly thereof, said controlling tube adapted to move over one end of the pipe, means for guiding the controlling tube in its movements, and said flange adapted to lie in a plane with the 1 fluid levelin the feed tank.
