it known that I, Josnrrr GOLDSMITH, Jr. a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of (look. and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful improvement in llairi urling Devices, of which the following is a specification,

'l" s invention relates to a hair curling or a cevice and has for its object to ride a device of this character which rereives and retains the hair and aids in producing a curled or waved appearance of the hair.

This object is attained by means of my device, which consists generally of a strip of flat resilient material bent upon itself to form a pair of opposing arms which receive, grip, press and crimp the hair between them, a strand oi hair usually being spirally wound on one of these arms and an improved arrangement being provided by means oi which the ends of the arms may be detachably locked together.

A. further object of my invention is to provide a device of this character in which the two arms can be readily locked together so that they cannot inadvertently separate while the device is in use and a still further object of my invention is to provide a locking device for the two arms which has no protruding points or ends to injure the hair or the head.

l /ith these objects and other objects which may hereinafter appear in View, I have devised. the particular arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the claims appended hereto.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof in whicha Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved hair curling device in its closed position.

In the preferred embodiment of my in-- vcntion, as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, the hair curling device is preterably constructed of a continuous strip or fiat, resilient material transversely folded upon itseli to form a loop 1 and a pair of oppositely disposed normally separated spring arms 2 an; 3. The arm 2 is provided at its end with a tapered portion bringing the end down to a point 4; and the end of said point is bent laterally or upwardly to form a projection 5 which acts as a locking member to be hereinafter referred to.

The other arm 3 is provided with a lockdevice in the nature of a slidaole sleeve member 6 which forms combined locking device guard member for the ends oi two

This guard member is provided on its upper face with a raised crown portion 7 which is centrally situated and or" substantially the same contour or snape as the tapered end a of the arm 2. it will be seen that when the guard member is held over the end of the arm 2, the tapered portion a of said arm iits into the crown portion 7 movement of the arm 2 is avoided. The under face of the guard member 6 is cut away or recessed as at 8. The guard member 6 is slidable on the end of the arm 3 and the slidmovement of the same thereon is restricted by means of a pair of spaced-apart stops 9 and 10. The stops 9 and 10 are in the nature oi elongated protuberances formed by distorting or forcing outward the mate rial of the spring arm 8. As the under face of theguard member 6 is cut away as at 8, the guard member is thus provided with a narrow portion 11 which lies between the two stops 9 and 10 and permits the sliding 'movcment of the guard member 6 on its arm 3.

The crown portion 7 of the guard member 6 is provided with a perforation or opening 12 with which the laterally extending projcction 5 on the end of the arm 2 engages.

In using my improved hair curling device a strand of hair is wound spirally about the arm 9. and the arms 9. and 3 are pressed together while the slidable guard member 6 is in the position shown in dotted lines in l, 3 and 4:. When the two arms are brought together the guard member 6 is moved to a position so the stop 9 and slides arm 2. The tendency over the end of the of the arms 2 and on the guard whereby lateral that it abuts against to spring apart causes the projecting end 5 on the arm 2 to snap into engagement with the opening 12 on the guard member 6, as disclosed in Fig. 2, thusholding the two arms together securely. T 0 release the arm 2 the two arms2 and 3 are pressed together adjacent their ends so that the sleeve may he slid over the end of the arm 2 and the arms then spring apart to the position disclosed in Fig. 4C.

7 While I have shown the projection 5 at the end of the arm 2 in the nature of an upturned or laterally bent tip thereon, it will be understood that any type of projection may be formed on said arm by distorting or forcing outward the metal therein or in any other way. The opening 12 in the guard member 6 may also be varied in shape or size to suit the projection formed on the arm 2.

From the foregoing it is obvious that my invention is not to be restricted to the exact embodiment shown but is broad enough to cover all structures coming within the scope of the annexed claims.

What I claim is:

l. A device of the class described comprising a. hair curler having a pair of resilient arms, a slidable guard on one of said arms adapted to be moved to overlie the end of the other arm, the guard having an opening and a projection extending from one of the arms adapted to extend into said opening. i

2. A device of the class described comprising a hair curler having a pair of arms,

adapted to be received in the aperture in the guard member to cause a locking engagement between the arm and the guard member.

4. A device of the class described comprising a hair curler having a pair of arms, a guard member slidably mounted on one oi said arms and movable over the other arm, a projection, and an a erture for receiving the same to estab lsh a locking means between the guard member and the arm over which it is moved.

5. A device of the class described comprising a hair curler having a pair of fiat resilient arms, a guard member slidable on one of said arms, a projection on the other arm, a central raised crown portion on the guard adapted to overlie the end oi the other arm and the crown portion of the uard having an opening to receive said projection.

A device of the class described come prising a hair curler having a pair o1 arms, a guard member slidably mounted on one of said arms adapted to be moved to engage 'the other arm and hold the ends of both of the arms together, the guard memher having an opening, and a laterally bent end on the upper end of the last mentioned arm adapted to be received in said opening. 7

7. A device of the class described, comprising a hair curler having two flat rcsilient arms, a slidable guard member on one of said arms having, a perforation, a pair 01"- spaced-apart stops on said arm adapted to restrict sliding movement of the guard member and a laterally bent end on the other arm adapted to enter into the pertoration in the guard.
