T 0 all whom it may concern: Be it known that 1, Oscar; F. ENGEL, citizen of the United States residing at Hartford, in the county of iartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Imprbvements in Sprinklers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sprinklers. I have a number of motives in view among them being the provision of an article of the character described which is capable of inexpensive production and by which an area may be properly and uniformly sprinkled. The sprinkler is of such character that the area covered by it instead of being circular or virtually so, is rectangular or practically square in view of which circumstance it requires with the present sprinkler less water to wet down a certain area than with those which cover an approximately circular surface. The sprinkler is of course capable of general use although it is especially intended for sprinkling lawns.
With the above general objects in view and others that will appear as thenature of the invention is better understood, the same consists of the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.

Like characters refer to like parts throughout the several views.
The sprinkler comprises a body or shell 2 which may for instance be formed by casting, and a cap such as the rose or operative portion 3 usually made from sheet metal. As illustrated the body or shell 2 is praotically cylindrical and obviously it is hollow or chambered. The cap, rose or operative portion 3 is of part spherical shape. As illustrated the wall portion of thebody or shell 2 has on the upper side thereof, the circular rabbet tin which the lower edge of the cap, rose or operative portion 3 is closely fitted and permanently held in some watertight manner. As will be inferred the cap, rose or operative portion has a multiplicity of jet openings which will be hereinafter orifices or jet openings as 6, the openings of the respective groups being substantially radially arranged and being along lines approximately ninety degrees apart. The water passing through these orifices or jet openings 6 delivers the longest streams and this is accomplished by making the trajectories of the streams issuing from said openings or orificesfi lower than those emerging from the groups of orifices between those denoted by 6. The orifices 7 8, 9, 10, and 11 are between the orifices 6 of the respective series. The trajectories of the orifices 7 and 11 are higher than those issuing from the orifices 6 and as a result the streams emerging from the orifices 7 and 11 are shorter than the streams issuing from the orifices 6. In like fashion the streams issuing from the orifices 8 and 10 are shorter than those issuing from the orifices 7 and 11 their trajectories of course being higher. Again the streams issuing from the extreme middle orifices 9 are shorter than those issuing from the other orifices their trajectories being the maximum height. as a consequence of this condition the surface covered by the liquid will be rectangular and desirably square. This is an important advantage obviously because less water will be required to cover a field made up of a series of rectangular areas than would be requisite to wet down a similarly sized field where the areas cov ered are circular. So that the orifices in the cap 3 may be properly positioned to accurately direct the streams emerging therefrom, said orifices filGTOliilQd at the bottoms of indentations or apertures 8 which are shaped a little diiferently from each other in order to obtain the requisite result. It will be noticed that the several-orifices to which I have referred are formed in the lll) V the sprinkler.
This is important in that the streams are accurately delivered Without Waste or loss.
What I claim is:
A sprinkler of the class'desoriloed oomprising a hollow body having'its upper end open and provided adjacent thereto with a rabbeted portion forming a seat, a laterally extending hollow supply nipple formed on and communicating with said 'body at its lower end, a semi-spherical cap removably fitted in said seat of the body, means for removably fastening said cap to said body, and. said cap having a plurality of ofiset 15 circumferentially extending perforated portions formed therein, for the purpose specified.
