0. w. BERGGREN. CAN OPENER. APPLICATION FILED AUG.8, f9l 9 1300, 106. Patented Dec. 13, 1921.

CAN -0IPENER.
icence.
Application filed August 8, 1919.
To all 107mm it may concern Be it known that l, OSCAR W. Bnneonnn, a citizen of Sweden, residing at VValtha-m, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Can-Openers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such will enabl others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to can openers and the primary object of the invention is to provide an improved can opener which can be effectively used for opening oblong cans and round cans.
A. furthen object of the invention is to provide an improved can opener embodying a pair of oppositely directed cutting blades, one of which is so shaped as to cut cans of oblong shape and the other blade is so shaped as to eiiciently out cans of circular shape.
further object of the invention is to provide an improved can opener having a pair of oppositely directed blades and an improved can engaging member arranged intermediate the blades so as to form an effective means for positioning the opener on a can.
A still further object of the invention is to p; vide an improved can opener of the above oha action which is durable and eiiicient in use, one that is simple and easy to manufacture, and one that can be placed upon the market at areasonable cost.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a. part thereof, in which:
Figure l. is a side elevation of the improved can opener.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same.
3 is an end. elevation of the can opener.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate correspiuding parts throughout the drawings, the numeral 1. generally indicates the improved can opener, which includes the handle 2 formed from single strip of sheet metal bent intermediate its ends to form spaced side bars 3, which converge toward their forward free ends and receive the can top engaging bar 4: which projects forwardly therefrom. The forward end of the can en- Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 316,165.
gaging bar 4 is rounded as at 5 so as to facllitate the movement of the can opener when in operation and this forms a pivotal point for the can opener.
A pair of blades 6 and 7 is arranged on opposite sides of the side bars 3 and projects forwardly therefrom and ends short of the outer end of the bar 4. Each oi? the blades includes a shank 8 which is arranged in abut ting relation to the side bars 3 and the shanks 8 are secured to the outer ends of the side bars 3 by means of rivets 9 which e2;- tend entirely through the same and through the bar 41-. It will be seen that the rivets not only hold the'blades 6 and 7 in position, but also hold the bar at against displace-- ment. The blade 6 is formed straight and extends in parallel relation to the bar t and is provided with a lower cutting edge 10 and isspecially adapted for opening oblong cans. The blade 7 extends outwardly below one edge of the bar 4 in a direction opposite to the blade 6 and is deflected outwardly as at 11 so as to provide substantially a curved blade, so as to facilitate the opening of cans of circular formation. The blade 7 is pro vided with a cutting edge 12 which is arranged opposite to the cutting edge 10 of the blade 6. H
Thus, it will be seen that when one of the blades is in operation the other blade will be positioned on the opposite side of the can and out of its way. When the opposite blade is to be used. the can opener is merely reversed and the blade adjacent to the can is inserted in the top thereof and used in the ordinary manner.
From the foregoing description item be seen that an improved can opener is provided, which is so constructed that cans of any configuration may be readily opened.
What I claim as new is:
A. can opener comprising a bar, a handle iaving its ends disposed on opposite sides of the bar, knives disposed one against each end of the handle and spaced from "the but thereby, the cutting edge of one of said knives being uppermost and the other lowermost, and securing means for said bar, handle and knives.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
OSCAR W. BERGGREN.
