FOUNTAIN PEN. v APPLICATIONFILED DEC.7. |920.

FOUNTAIN-PEN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 13, 1921.
Application filed. December 7, 1820. Serial No. 428,940.
To all 'whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, NICHon-is B. PANOFF, a citizen of Russia, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Fountain-Pen, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in fountain pens and it pertains more particularly to that type of fountain pens in which a flexible ink reservoir is employed.
It is one of the objects of the presen-t invention to so construct a fountain pen that when the pen is in closed position, the ink reservoir is contracted at its discharge end to prevent feeding of the ink from the reservoir regardless of the position occupied by the pen.
It is a further object of the invention to provide means whereby when the contracted condition of the reservoir is relieved, the reservoir may be again compressed at its opposite end to insure the proper feeding of the ink from the reservoir to the pen nib.
It is a further object of the invention to so construct the pen that when the cap is removed from the rear end thereof, the ink remaining upon the nib will be drawn into the reservoir.
It is a still further object of the invention to construct a mechanism for carrying out the above operations, which mechanism is operated by the closing cap of the fountain en. p Vith the above and other objects in view, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view partly broken away, of a pen constructed in accordance with the present invention and showing the closing cap in closing position' Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the closing cap on the rear end of the pen or in that position which it occupies during the writing operation;
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 4- 4 of Fig. 1 and at right angles to Figs. 1 and 2;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a modifiedl form of the invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the reference character 10 designates the barrel of the pen, and 11 designates the closing cap.
Mounted within the barrel 10 is an ink reservoir 12 and said ink reservoir is formed from any suitable material such as rubber or the like. The reservoir 12 is connected to tn e neck 13 of the pen by having its neck 14 slipped .over a reduced portion of the neck 13 wliih lies within the barrel 10, said neck 13 having an ink passage 14 which in turn leads to the nib 15 of the pen.
Mounted within the barrel 10 near its forwardend and secured thereto against reciprocating movement, is a collar 16, and said collar 16 has a plurality of forwardly extending resilient fingers 17, the forward end of each of which is curved inwardly as at 13. Slidably mounted on the exterior of the barrel 10, is a ring 19, and said ring carries a pin 2O adapted for reciprocating movement in a slot 21 formed in the barrel 10. Mounted within the barrel 10 and surrounding the resilient fingers 17, is a smaller ring 25, so shaped as to provide an inclined surface 26 adapted to ride upon the resilient fingers 17 heretofore mentioned. -The ring 25 is provided with a rearwardly projecting tongue 24, by means of which it is secured to the ring 19 through the medium of the pin 20. By this mechanism it is apparent that as the ring 19 is reciprocated rearwardly of the barrel, the inclined surface 26 of the ring 25 will cause a projection of the resilient lingers 17, andthe projections 18 thereof will be caused to close about the ink reservoir 12, as shown in Fig. l.
Mounted against reciprocating movement within the rear end of the barrel, is a ring 30, and said ring 30 has a plurality of rearwardly extending spring lingers 31, which fingers are adapted to inclose the rear end of the ink reservoir 12. Mounted in suoli a manner as to engage the rearwardly extending fingers 31, is a ring 32, and said ring is so shaped as to form an inclined surface 33 adapted to engage the hereinbefore mentioned resilient lingers 31. Projecting forwardly from the ring 32, are tongues 34, and each of said tongues 34 carries a pin 37 lying Within a slot 35 in the barrel 10. The reference character 36 designates av ring surrounding the barrel 10 and connected to the pins 37. By this construction it is apparent that as the ring 36 is reciprocated upon the barrel 10, the ring 32 will be reciprocated longitudinally of the resilient fingers 31 to compress the rearend of the ink reservoir.
In the form of' the invention shown in Fig. 5, the pen is constructed in such a. manner that the two rings 25 and 82 are movable in unison and to obtain this result, the rings 19 and 36 are dispensed with and a suitable sleeve 40 is reciprocatively mounted on the exterior of the barrel 10. This sleeve 40 is connected to the forward ring 25 by means of a rivet 41, and to the rear ring 32 by means of a. rivet 42. As indicated by the reference characters 43 and 44, which indicate front and rear slots, respectively, the sleeve 40 is permitted to reciprocate upon the barrel 10, it being understood that the rivets or pins 4l and 42 have free movement in their respective slots 43 and 44. The device operates in the following manner, assuming that the pen isv in operative condition as shown in Fig. 2 and it is desired to close the same: The cap l1 is removed and placed upon the forward end of the pen barrel 10. As the cap 11 is positioned to close the forward end of' the barrel 10, the end of the cap which receives the barrel will reciprocate the ring 19 and will force the same rearwardly of the barrel 10 and will cause a contraction of the resilient fingers 17 through the medium of the ring 25. This operation causes the fingers l'to choke the discharge end of the reservoir 12 and prevent the passage of ink therefrom. Simultaneously with this opera-tionV suction will be created at the rear of the ink reservoir to draw the ink from the nib to the reservoir. A ,When it is desired to use the penY for writing, the cap 11 is removed from the forward voir through the ink passage 14 in the neck 14 of the pen. Y Y
In the modified form of the invention, Ythe action of the cap 11 is the saine as in the preferred form except that in the modified form the capcll engages the opposite ends of the sleeve 40, thus causing the contracting rings 25 and 32 to operate in unison.
While in the present instance theA closing cap 11 has been shown as internally screwthreaded, as at 50, which screw threads Vare radapted for engagement with the threads 51 on the barrel to' maintain the cap in closed position relative to the pen, it is obvious that these screw threads may be dispensed with and the cap retained in place upon the pen in frictional engagement therewith if Vdesired, or the barrel 10 may be provided with external screw threads to receive the internal screw threads of the cap.V 1
I claim:
In a fountain pen, a reservoir, means for contracting the discharge end ofV said reser- `voir to prevent a flowk of fluid therefrom, and
means for contracting the rear end of said reservoir to promote the flow of fluid therefrom, both of said means being operated by the closing cap of the pen.
