DRYING DEVICE.

printing presses for the purpose of quickly drying the paper and printed matter.
Another object is to make'my improved drying device of a durable and comparatively simple construction which can be readlly put in operative position.
A further object is to so construct a device of my invention that while it uses gas flames for drying purposes, the flames Will not set the paper on fire even though the paper accidentally stops while over the device.
These objects, and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, I attain in the following manner, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view of a device constructed in accordance with my invention Fig. 2 is a cross section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1,

Referring to the drawings, 7 represents a gas burner including anelongated pipe 8 which has a row of holes 9 arranged 1n the direction of the length of the ipe and operative to permit the escape of gas to produce the flames 10 so that the flames 10 are projected laterally or in substantially hori-.

is secured at spaced distances apart a number of yoked or U-shape brace members 13; said brace members having their, free ends 14 abuttin the pipe 8 as clearly shown in Fig. 2. (Jlamping bands 15 which are of substantially elliptical shape as shown in Fig. 3 clamp the strip 11 to the pipe 8 and thereby serve to hold the frame in position in connectionwith the pipe with the strip 12 opposed to the holes 9 in the pipe 8. A
wire screen or gauze 16 surrounds the frame 11 and pipe 8 and the opposite edges of the screen are secured together by bolts 17 as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
The clamping bands 15 preferably surround the wire screen 16 and the brace members 13 serve to hold the screen 16 in shape. Any suitable means can be employed for supporting the burner and the device can be secured in such position as to extend transversely under the paper as it passes out of the printing machlne; said paper being indicated at 18 in Fig. 2. The paper 18 will pass in contact with the top of the screen or gauze 16 and the heat from the flames 10 will serve to dry the printed matter on the paper as the prlnted paper passes over the device. In addition to drying the ink on the paper the device also serves to remove the static electricity from the paper; thusenabling the printed sheets to be piled in proper form which cannot be done if thepaper contains electricity, as often occurs during the printing operation.
By arranging the parts so that the gauze or screen is of substantially elliptical or elongated cross section a comparatively long or large flame can be used and housed within the casing provided by the screen.
In actual practice over an extended period I have found that with the use of my device even though the paper accidentally stops while restlng upon the gauze or screen 16 that the paper will not catch on fire. It will become charred but it will not ignite. Furthermore an extended heating surface is provided by the screen having the shape as above described so that the paper even though run at a comparatively great speed will be dried when passing over the device.
The frame 11 serves as a rigid support and serves to hold the screen in the desired form and at the same time the-screen prevents the leg portions of the brace members from-spreading and by drawing up upon the bolts 17 the end portions of the braces with the device can then be slid from the pipe and an ordinary pipe can 'be'used in connection other connecting projections are necessary in order to secure the device in proper operative position. I
While I have described my invention as taking a particular form, it will be understood that the various partspf my invention may be changed without departing from the spirit thereof, and hence'I do not limit myself to the precise construction set forth, but consider that I am at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly come withjn the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let.- ters Patent is .1. A device of the character described for use i i-connection with printing presses. for I prmtlng sheet material,- including a burner plpe having a.row of holes in 1ts side to cause flames to be projected laterally therefrom in a direction substantially parallel to the printed sheet; and a screen extending lateral y substantially parallel on its top with the flames and printed sheet and form ing a housing: for said flames; substantially as'described' 2. A device of the character described including a burner pipe having holes in its side whereby flames will be projected laterally; a frame having parts engaging said pipe and extending laterally therefrom; a wire screen surrounding said frame and plpe and forming'a housing for said flames, said frame having yoked braces with their ends in engagement with said pipe; and a strip connectmg said braces at points remote from said pipe whereby the frame is held to the pipe and forms a brace for 'the screen; substantially as described. v
