Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec.. d, 192i,
. Application tiled .Tune 28, i919. Seriat No. 307,316.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, Mumien D. iineoon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indiana, in the county of indiana and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bit-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to containers, the object bein toprovide a container or bor especially designed for the purpose of containing bits, (such as are used in mining machines) when it becomes necessary to carry them away for sharpening or other purposes.
Another object is to provide a container, which is simple, durable and cheap of construction, being capable of withstanding rough usage, such as a box for holding mine machine bits might be subjected to.
A further object is to provide a container of the above character having a novel form of lid or closure in which the securing means for the lid is designed to provide a handle for carrying the container.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the following' description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a perspective view of a container embodying the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the iid Fig. fi is a detail section showing the manner of reversing the lid to secure it Hush with the top of the container.
Referring to the drawings in detail, like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views.
As previously stated, the container is especially designed for the purpose of holding bits, such as are used in mining machines, and for this purpose it is necessary to provide a container or box which is of durable character, as the latter is frequently subjected to exceedingly` rough handling. yThe container is therefore preferably formed of metal of `cylindrical cross sectional shape, and may be formed from a section of iron pipe 10. The bottom ll is also formed of metal and comprises a disk formed with diainetrically located apertured ears l2, which are'bent laterally and secured upon the outside of the end of the container through the medium of rivets 13, the latter passing through the apertures in the ears l2 and openlngs lll provided in the container. Segmental sections l5 are also formed upon the bottom ll, and are designed to be bent upward around the outside of the container to provide a close fitting bottom.
ne of the novel features of the invention resides in the lid or closure which is removably secured to the other end of the receptacle. rlihis lid comprises a dish i6, which .is provided with diametrically located apertured ears 17, which are bent at right angles to the dislnwhich is of the proper diameter to snugly fit within the receptacle. llfhe lid is removably secured within the receptacle through the medium of a rod or bolt 18, which passes through the apertures in the ears l? and through openings 19 in the end of the receptacle, being secured in position through the medium of a nut 20. By thus securing the lid, the latter is located within the container and spaced from the end thereof, so that the bolt or rod 18 may be used to provide a handle for carrying the container. lf desired, the lid may he secured flush with the top\ edge of the container, and for this purpose openings 2l are provided for the passage of the bolt or rod 18. ldhen the lid is so positioned, the capacity of the container will be increased, but 'this is only designed forexceptional cases, it being preferred to secure the lid in the manner first described, so as to provide for conveniently carrying the container.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of therappended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is:
l. A container comprising a receptacle open at one end, a closure snugly fitting within said end, a transverse rod engageable with the closure and adapted to be insorted in' offset pairs of oppositely arranged openings, whereby the closure may be Secured Within the receptacle, either flush with 0r spaced from the end of the latter.
2'. A container Ycomprising a. receptacle open at one end, a reversible closure snugly fitting within said end and means for Securing the closure within the receptacle, whereby one position of said closure will be flush with the end of the receptacle and the re 10 versed position, spaced from the end of said receptacle.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature.
