I rrsrtrne APPLIANCE.
Specification of Letters Eatent. Pat gntgd N 29, 1921,
Application filed August 16, 1920. Serial No. 403,783.
To aZZ w ham it may "concern Be it known that T, L l/oi nnn a citizen of the Unitedfiitates, residing at and an increase inconvenience and usefulness.
The invention consists in certain details of construction and arrangement by which the above objects are attained, to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The accompanying drawings form a part of this pecification and show an approved form of the invention. 7
Figure 1 is a plan or top view of the ap pliance.
Fig. 2 is a corresponding side elevation, partly in vertical section.
The remaining figures are on a larger scale and show details of construction.
Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section through the handle of the appliance and a portion of the connecting bar.
Fig. 4 is a horizontal section through a portion of the handle, taken on the line as in Fig. 8. r
Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse section, taken on the line 5-5 in Fig. 3.
Similar letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the figures.
The appliance consists of two main parts, the reel, and the handle and connected lineguide. In the present improved form the main portion of the handle, with the lineguide and the connecting bar are in a single casting, preferably of aluminum for lightness. A is the fixed hollow handle portion, from which extends the downwardly depending semicircular bar F carrying a tubular extension L serving as a line-guide in axial alinement with the handle.
On the forward end of the handle are two transverse semicircular grooves in which are received the base pillars I of'a removable reel G which may be of any suitable type of the proper size. The pillars are firmly clamped 1n position by a lock1ng-plate J having semicircular grooves matching the plllars I and drawn tightly against the lat- -l 'll h' l ter by a screw L lntlOC uced ilht y t oug 1 the handle and engaged in the locking-plate.
The line-guide L has upwardly extend ng inclined notches Z: in its sides, in which the pillar I of the reel, opposite thebase p'illars I, is received and engaged by an upward movement of the reel, thus firmly joining the line-guide to the handle and reinforcing the semicircular bar F against strains tending to straighten the latter;
On the forward end of the handle portion A and extending downwardly therefrom along the'bar F, is a curved hook N cast intergrally with the handle and bar and terminating close to the outer surface of the bar. It is adapted to receive the finger of I the user and insure the retention of the appliance in the act of casting the line. The hook N also serves as a means of suspending the appliance from a belt or pocket when desired, to permit the free use of both hands.
The handle is divided longitudinally on a vertical plane and has a portion 0 corresponding in form to the rear part ofthe fixed portion A and is hinged thereto at B. The portion C is adapted to swing open laterally, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1, to afford access to the interior of the handle in which are oppositely located transversely placed semicircular disks A 'of cork held in position by engagement with internal spurs a 0 on the handle portions A and C, adapted to receive the barbs of extra hooks, not shown. The remaining space within the handle may receive a supply of sinkers or other small articles. 1
The pivoted handle portion C is held closed by a spring catch D riveted on the interior of the fixed handle A and having a perforation at d adapted to ride over and engage a stud G on the interior of the hinged handle 0.. The spring is released by pressure on a button D protruding through the shell of the handle portion A, operated by the thumb or finger.
In assembling the device the reel G is introduced within the curved bar ,F and its pillar l engaged in the notches Zyof the line-guide L. The pillars I are then placed in the grooves on the handle portion A, the locking-plate J applied and the screw K introduced and screwed home. 7
By thus tying the line-guide to the handle the reel serves as a brace and permits the bar F to be light Without impairing the strength of the appliance, and also permits the employment of a relatively soft or pliable metal, as aluminum, for the casting.
I claim 1. In a device of the character set forth, a handle having transverse grooves at its end, a tubular line-guide in axial alinement with said handle and having notches in its sides, a curved bar connecting said handle and guide, a reel having base pillars received in such grooves and a pillar engaged in such notches, and a locking-plate arranged to clamp said base pillars to said handle.
2. In a device of the character set forth,
a hollow handle having transverse grooves at its end, a tubular line-guide in axial alinement with said handle and having notches in its sides, a curved bar connecting said handle and guide and cast integrally therewith, a reel having base pillars received in such grooves and an oppositely located pillar engaged in suchnotches, a locking-plate arranged torapply upon said base pillars, and a screw extending from the interior of said handle to said plate and adapted to clamp the latterupon said base pillars.
3. In a device of the character set forth, a handle, a tubular line guide in axial aline- Inent therewith and connected thereto by a curved bar, a reel between said handle and line guide and partially encircled by said bar, base pillarson said reel, Ineans'for securing said base pillars to said handle, and a pillar on said reel opposite said base pil= lars and means for connecting it to said line guide, whereby the frame of said reel forms a rigid connection between said handle and line guide additional to said bar, and serves with the latter in'maintaining said handle and line guide in alinement, and to resist strains tending to straighten said curved bar.
In testimony that I claim the invention above set forth I afiix my signature.
EDWARD R. GILLETTE.
