ARTIFICIAL TOOTH.

ATTy.
GEORGE HUGH BEATTIE LOCKETT,
ARTIFICIAL TOOTH.
Application filed March 5, 1921.
To all w from it may concern Be it known that GEORGE HUGH BEATTIE LooKnTr, dentist, citizen of the British Empire, residing at 21 Carnarvon street, town of Grisborne, in the Dominion of New Zealand, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Artificial Teeth, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to artificial teeth and its object is to provide an artificial tooth which is of universal use forgold or plate work, which is preferably adapted to backmg, in which no checking is required, is interchangeable, easy to repair, is strengthened for vulcanite work, and does not rock on the plate. In its applicable for any class of artificial tooth, fiat back or shoulder tooth, whether the usual pins be baked in or soldered in, or are long pins or headed pins.
The object of the invention is effect'ed by.
forming in the tooth a recess under cut or shaped in any pattern with pins secured therein inclined to or from each other for retention of cement and a cap preferably of metal adapted to fit into the recess and over the pins enabling a wax pattern to be made without sticking to the tooth wherefrom the gold backing is cast integral with the cap. By these means there is perfect relationship and connection between the cap and the recess in the tooth and the backing and-there is no need for this tooth to be placed in a furnace or vulcanizer and no necessity for using precious metals in its manufacture. The invention is illustrated on an enlarged scale in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the tooth in a vulcanite plate, Fig.2 is a back elevation of the tooth showing the recess and the pins therein, F ig. 3 is a sectional plan of the tooth through lined-b of Fig. 2 showing the inclination of'the pins, Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation of the tooth showing the cap in position and the wax pattern over same, Fig. 5 is a perspective plan of the cap, Fig. 6 is a sectional elevation of the tooth showing the gold backing and cap'in position cemented to the tooth. Referring to these drawings the tooth (l) is formed with a sharp cutting edge (2) and has the usual curved upper surface 3 at the back. A recess 10 is formed in the tooth 1) preferably by increasing the usual thickness of the tooth by the integral addition of a recessed portion 5 to the tooth instead of formlng the V recess 10 in the body of the tooth which Specification of Letters Patent.
would weaken it.

ably of a depth of one fourth or one fifth of the thickness of the tooth. In the middle of the recess 10 there are secured to the tooth preferably inclined headed pins 1 1 for vulcanite work This recess 10 is prefer as shown in'Figs; 1, 2 and 3 and Patented Nov. 29, 1 921.
headless pins 6 for gold work as shownin Figs. 4 and 6. These pins are made headless so that'a cap 8 see Fig. 5 may embrace them as shown in Fig. 4,
the edge 7 of the I cap reaching-near the bottom of the recess 1 I lO'and the body of the cap'protruding out of the recess about half the thickness of the cap.
A piece of wax 15 see Fig. 4: is pressed.
to form a pattern over the back of the cap and of the tooth and up the 3 to the gingivalmargin or end 1. The wax pattern 15 holding the cap is then removed and from it is cast the gold backing 16 see Fig. 6 having integral with it the cap' out of the backing to the Y 8 which pro ects depth of the recess 10 in thetooth. The p1ns if not originally placed inclined in the tooth are now bent-to incline and the tooth is then cemented on in the usual way to the backing. It will be seen that by these means the backing of the tooth can be made with a cutting edge 13, see Fig. 1 I
flat back and sharp 6 so that the bite of the when necessary The cap instead shown in Fig. i backing will form a back to it as seen in Fig. 6.
I claim opposing teeth can of having a closed back as 1. An artificial tooth comprising a body portion, a recess formed on the back of said body portion, pins within said recess, secured to saidbody portion and a cap adapted to pass behind this edge 13.-
curved portion,
may be open as the cast fit into said recess over said pins and pro- 1 trude from said body portion substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. An artificial tooth consisting portion, a'recess formed on the back of said body portion, pins within said recess secured to said body portion and a backing. having formed integral therewith a cap, said backing and cap being secured to the back of said body portion substantially as described.
In testimony whereof he has affixed his signature in presence of two witnesses.
