PTENT? JACOB PETRY, on rIVTTsBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA."
Y DENTURE.
Application filed Ap11'14, 1.92.4. Serial No. 706,603.
My invention relates to dentures and particularly to the means whereby said den# tures are maintained in the mouth of the wearer.
My invention has for one of its objects the provision of a denture of such form that the suction'device may be readily placed therein in proper alignment.
Another object ot' my invention is to simplify and improve generally the manufacture. of devices ot' the character above re- .'erred to.
@ne form which my' invention may take is Vshown in the accompanying drawing wherein Fig. 1 is a'perspective view of acompleted denture, with the suction device in position; Fig. 2 is a sectional view, on anV enlarged scaletalen on the line 2-2 of Eig. l, previous to the insertion of the lsuction member; Fig. Bis a vieW similar to that of Fig. 2 with the suction inemberin position;
nig. 4 is a view ofthe suction device pref vious to insertion in the denture, and Fie.
is a vievv of a portion of a metallic member for forming a recess in the denture.
The denture or dental plate 5 as shown in the drawing, isintended to fit upon the lower-jaw beingshoivn in the drawing in inverted position, for greater clearness of illustration. somewhat after the usual lmanner but instead of being provided With anarcuate recess VWhose bottom surface is disposed insubstantially a horizontal plane in accordance with the usual practice, I provide a recess 3 for the reception of a suction plate 7 cornposed mainly of rubber or like materialV and having the usual suction cups 8 for engage# wardljf, thus inclining the front or intermediate suction cups 8 to such an extent thatV they will not properly seat against the gums.
In order to overcome this Y difficulty I the denture.
This denture 5 may be made depress the it'oriva'rd extremity of the recess 6 slightly. las indicated in Fig. 2. It Will Vbe observed that the downward inclination of the bottomv of the-recess 6 tends to tip those cu s. which are ad'acent'to that oint for- P a Ward y, thus compensating for or counteracting the tendency of the cups te be tippedv backwardly When'the plate 7 is inserted in rlhe denture 5 is of molded material-of any suitable character and the recess is formed therein by means of a patternl consisting preferably of a metallic member 9 having the desired arcuatel form and Which is withdrawn after formation of the depression or groove in the'denture The undercut portions of the-recess 6 are then cut or milled out for the reception bf the edges of the suction plate .7, the suction plate '7 .be-V y ing cementedfin position in the recess, somewhat after the manner set forth in my Patent No. 1,463,968 issued August 7, 1923.
In order to give a clearer understanding of how the recess 6 is formed, I have shovvn in Figure 5 substantially one-half ofthe .metallic member E) about which the denture .ery or outer edge the thickness ofthe menibert con'nnences'to gradually increase at about the point c and reaches lits Amaximum thickness at the foremost point o Where it is desired that the groove'G shall have its greatest depth. v
Continuing from the point o, thethiclness of said outer edge of the member 9. gradually vdecreases in substantially the same degree as from l) to c, one-half of the parts 9 being omitted for the salte of clear-r ness. It Willthus be seenthat the vertical height of the rear Wall of the groove is substantially uniform fromend'to end` and that the vertical height of the outermost Wall of the-groove increases towards the front of the recess but is of'substantially thesame height adjacent to the rear ends of the recess 6 as the inner wall thereof.
lVhile' I have described a manner in which'the recess may be formed it will be apparent ythat I do'not limit myself in this case to the means thus described7 but my invention includes all such n'iodificutions as may come Within the terms of the Vaccon'ipanying Claims.
What I claim is: l
1. A denture provided with a substantial- 1y horizontal arcuate recess having la flat bottom Whose outer edge, intermediate the ends ot the recess, is inclined downwardly. 2. A denture provided with. a curved recess having a substantially fiat bottomv pieren, here hereunto set my hand.
JACOB PETRY.
