Description
P. V. HUMPHRIES.v
' INTERCHANGEABLE ANTERIQR mom.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 23. T91].
1,258,41 3 Patented Mar. 5, 1918 41 gHMMOZ FYHUMPHRIB s of the side walls 11 of the backing are provided integrally formed inwardly extending flanges 15 arranged with their-inner edges in parallel relation throughout their length I and adapted to be engaged in the grooves l formed in the inclined sides of the base portion. 4
Owing to the inner, walls of the grooves being in spaced parallel relation throughout their length and the construction of the inner edges of the flanges formed on the side walls of the backingit will be readily" seen that the tooth maybe applied tothe backing or the backing appliedto thetooth with out any resistance beingolfered by the engagement of the flanges with the grooves. These grooves and fiangeswhen engaged will serve to prevent any rocking or twisting of the tooth, thereby greatly'strengthening the construction of the same. The grooves. and socket are so arranged that a plane passing through the grooves will intersect a portion of the curve of the socket 9 formed in the base portion, and when the backing is applied, the lug 14 formed on the backing will be engagedin the recess in a substantiallyhooked manner, and owing to the arrangement of the grooves and the.
socket as hereinbefore described, any twisting or lateral strain upon the tooth will be taken up and distributed evenly at all points throughout the tooth and backing soas. not to bring undue stress upon'any portion of the tooth and thereby weaken the same.
The socket 9 is of sufficient size as to leave an equal thickness of the walls at the front and rear of the tooth, and owing to this con struction, it will be seen that no undue strain will be applied upon either of the walls of the tooth as theyare'of the same thickness throughout.
In the mounting of my improved artificial tooth, gold. is burnished over the end of the tooth root, which is cut as desired, and
pierced for pin reception, the tooth and backing are then placed together, the tooth being selected as to color and size, the backing waxed in place, tooth removed and backing invested for soldering, afterward, tooth is cemented into the backingand polishing" is'done as desired.) For bridge work, the manner of mounting is similar excep t that, suitable abutinents are formedand the back ings mounted therebetween. It will be readange 13 which is ily seen that this construction entirely eliminates the necessity of the individual. dentist teeth are manufactured, and therefore all are manufactured and.
teeth will be interchangeable as the size of teeth are standardized regardless. of the size or location of the tooth. I
'the backings and the base portions of the I do not confine myself to the use of this backing for any special work such as crown work or bridge work, but I desire it to be understood that owingto construction,1 the. backmg'niay be appl ed in bridge work orsuitably supported on a pin inserted in i the root of a tooth for crown work, as desired. I
In, the, accompanying drawing 7 I have illustrated iny i nproved artificial tooth as i applied as an anterior tooth, but it is to be understood that the same construction may be applied to other various forms of teeth. I desire it also to be understood that I do not limit myself. specifically to the materials and details of construction employed in this embodiment of my invention, but:
that such may beusedas may fall within the scope of the appended claims.
' I wish it also understood that the flanges,
and grooves on the metallic backing and body of the. tooth respectively may be dispensed with if desired, and that the shape of the attaching lug may be varied, or that the attaching lug may be madecorrugated or of plain surface as desired, the corrugated form being the preferred embodiment of my invention.
