Description

@.ENACHE, DOOR CLOSER AND CHECK.
APPLICATION FILED AFR. Il, 192|.

' noon CLOSER, AND CHECK.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, CocIU ENACHE, citizen of Turkey, (who has signified his intention of .becoming a citizen of the United States,) residing at Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door Closers and Checks, of which the following is a specification. Y
This'invention relates to new and useful improvements in door closers and checks.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device employing a spring retracted plunger and means for retarding the retractlon of the plunger whereby the door is gradually closed. And also to arrange the closing means whereby the movementof the door is accelerated as it approaches the closing position and is finally arrested in a closed position.
A construction designed to carry out the invention will be hereinafter described together with other features of the invention.
The invention will be more readily understood from a reading of the following speciication and by reference to the accompanying drawings, lin which an example of the invention is shown and wherein:
Figurel is an elevation of a portion of a door and door frame showing a device constructed in accordance with my invention in position thereon,
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the device,
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of a portion of the device, and
F 1g. 4 is a cross sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
In the drawings the numeral 10 designates an elongated rectangular housing or casing which isprovided with ears 11 at its upper and lower ends and flush with its rear side whereby it may be secured to lthe jamb A of a door frame by means o-f screws 12. In the lower half of the casing a pair 0f transverse webs or partitions 13 are arranged transversely and spaced apart so as to provide a guideway therebetween and vertical spaces 14 on each side thereof. Vithin the guideWay is arranged a vertical plunger 15 which carries a cross bar 16 at its upper end normally resting upon the upper edges of the web. Coiled springs 17 have their upper end secured to' the ends of the bar 16 and extend down through the spaces 14. The lower @nils .0f the springs Specification of Letters Patent. y Patented N 0V. 29, 1,921- Application led April 11, 19271. Serial No. 460503.* v i :are fastened to eyes 18 at the bottom of the e erally from the eye and isv attached toa hook or other connection 23 on the door B. When the door B is open the connection 2O will be pulled through the leye 22 and upwardly through the casing 1,0, whereby the plunger 15 will be elevated against the tension of the springs 17 to the yposition shown in dotted linesvin Fig. 2. Wheny thedoor is released the extended springs will pullth'e cross bar 16 downwardly whereby the connection 2O will be retracted and the door closed.
It will Vbe noted that the plunger 15 tapers upwardly from its lower end at one side, whereby it is. given an inclined face 24. The face 24 terminates at its upper end in a notch 25. One of the partitions 13 is rovided with a slot 26. A detent 27 exten s through the slot andprojects into the guideway. The detent is provided with' springarms 28 fastenedat their ends on the outside of the slotted partition. Normally the detent projects into the notch 25 as is shown in Fig. 2. This detent has a rounded edge which is presented to the plunger. When the plunger is pulled upwardly the inclined face 24 rides into engagement with the detent 27 and displaces the same outwardly through the slot 26 as is indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The
resilient nature of the detent and its arms` produces a frictional contact with the face 24 which is increased as the plunger is elereleased the springs 17 will pull'the cross bar 16 downwardly, wherebyV the plunger 15 will be moved downwardly and the connection 20 pulled through the eye 22 to close the door; However, the pressure of the detent 27 .Qn-.the .inclined fait will es .as the @het and the door approaches its closing position the pressure of the detent 27 on the face 24 willY decrease and thus the swinging Inovement of the door will be gradually accelerated until the notch Q5V arrivesV at the detent, when the door will be fully closed and all resistance to the Vaction of the springs and the downward movement or" the plunger, will be removed. ABy this arrangement the door will closeproperly and during the initial opening movements 'the tension of the springs 1'? will not be retarded because the detent will not ride onto the face 24: until the ydoor has been.V started on its opening Swing?.
, Various changes 'and modifications may be made'without departing from the spirit Vor the invention.
What I claim, is: t
1. In a device of the character described, a supporting structure having a guideway, a plunger mounted in the guideway, a ilexibleconnection attached Yto theplunger, a coiled, spring having one end connected with the 'structure `Iand the other end yconnected with the plunger, and a resilient detent env.ga'ging `*the plunger for retarding its return movement. a
2.511,1 a ldevice of the character described, an elongated casing, partitions at the lower end oi the-casing arranged transversely and spaced to torna a guideway therebetween, one'of said partitions having a slot, a plunger arranged in the guideway between the partitions and having an inclined face terminating in a notch, a resilient detent eX- tending through the slot of said partitions and normally projecting into the notch of theplunger and disposed inthe path or the inclined face thereof, a cross bar in the upper end of the plunger normally resting on the upper ends of the partitions, coiled Springs having their upper end attached to the plunger and extending down on each Vside of the partitions, the lower ends ofthel springs beingfpattached to the lower portion of the casing, and a flexible connection attached to the upper end of the plunger and extending tothe upper end of the casing.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
