IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTON-FASTENINGS.

Specification forming pa-rt of Letters Patent No. 139,808, dated June. 10, 1873; application led April 5, 1873.

To' all whom it may concern:

- Be it known that I, MARCUS ORMSBEE, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State ol New York, have invented an Improved Button-Fastening for Shoes and other Garments, of which the following is a specication:

My invention relates to a fastening of metal or other suitable material, formed with a flat head and an elastic tongue, the latter having at or near its midlengtha bow or loop to receive the eye of the button, the said bow or loop being formed, as hereinafter described, to adapt it to project through a small opening formed for it in the garment, so as to secure the button without holding it rigidly, and at the fastening becoming accidentally detached.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a perspective view of the fastening closed. Fig. 2 is an elevation of it Aapplied to button, and Fig. 3 a side view of it detached.

A represents a hat head of brass, composition, or other metal, to one edge of which is attached a tongue, B, extending across to the opposite edge, its free end b being made to rest snugly against the head, but permitted by the elasticity of the tongue to be sprung up sufficiently to admit the eye or shank E of a button of common form. At or near its midlength the tongueB isformed with a bend or loop, C, having shoulders c c, which, when in use, are pressed by the margin of the opening in the cloth or leath r, through which the loop projects. This prevents the fastening from accidentally pulling out of the eye of the button and escaping. The projection of the loop through the openin g is also beneficial in affording freedom of movement to the button instead of holding it rigidlyT in one position. This affords the greatest facility for buttoning, as is well understood.

The fastening is very readily applied either by an adult or by a child, by first passing the button-shank through the aperture from the front, and then inserting itunder the tongue B, near the free end b thereof. A slight turn of the button or of the fastenn g then introduces the end b into the eye, and, the tongue being slipped along until the loop or bow U reaches the eye, the said loop orbow enters the opening, and the button is thus secured with its shank entirely on the outside of the garment. N o instrument is required in applying the fastening.

I claim as my invention- The button-fastener herein described, con-` structed with a flat head and an elastic tongue fitted to spring int-o the eye of the button, and

having a shouldered loop to project through a hole in the shoe or other garment, as specilied and shown.
