TYPE-MAKING- MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER ARMSTRONG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicopee, in the county of Hampden and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Making Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in machines for making or forming type which is intended to be used in type-writingma.

Broadly considered, this invention embodies the idea of forming the characters by subjecting the blank of material from which the type is to be formed, to a combined pressure and rolling or kneading process. An important feature of the present invention is in providing means for exerting or transmitting the pressure directly, or in a vertlcal line, to the blank from which the type is to be formed.
The invention further compr1ses means, or devices, for adjusting the various parts of the machine to take up any wear or lost motion that may occur.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of the machine showing the work holder in which the blank is placed, the vertically reciprocating crosshead, the forward ends of the connecting rods for reciprocating the matrix holder.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1, showing the worm drive, the cam for operating the crosshead for exerting pressure on the blank in the matrix holder, the crosshead adjustment, and the holder for the blank and matrix.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the holder for the blank, and the fixed racks for causing the matrix holder to be oscillated and reciprocated.

drive shaft is indicated at 5 and the drive pulley at 6. 7 is a worm on the shaft 6 which drives the worm gear 8 on the vertical shaft 9. Mounted on and secured at the upper end of the shaft 9 is a cam 10 hav1ng the dwell, or horizontal flat surface 11, let off 12, and gradual inclinedv part 13. A bracket 14 carries a roller 15 upon which rests and turns the lower outer edge of the cam 10 in order to always maintain the cam 1n a horizontal position. A rocker arm 16 is pivoted at 17 and carries a roller 18 which travels on the raised edge 19 of the cam 10. Thls arm rests at its forward end upon the adjusting wedge 20 which is secured to the vertically reciprocating crosshead 21 that is mounted for movement on the plate 4 and is held in place by the plates 22. This wedge is for taking up lost motion and for necessary adjustments. The wedge 20 is adjusted by means of the screw 23 and lock nut 23. 24 is a plate at the lower end of the crosshead, which is provided with a curved rack or segmental gear 25. Engaging the rack are the rack plates 26 which are secured to the outer ends of the oscillating or rocker block 27 which is formed with the curved surfaces 28 and 29 (see, Fig. 2). The surface 29 engages the curved surface 30 of the matrix block 31 which is mounted in the forward ends of the reciprocating arms 32 and 33. The matrix is indicated at 34, and
is held in place by the set screw 35.- Arranged above the matrix is screw 36 which is adjusted by placing a tool in the opening 37. The weight of the arms 32 and 33 is counterbalanced by means of the coiled springs 38. The matrix carrying block 31 is provided with are shaped rack plates 39 and 40 at its ends, which mesh with the rack plates 26 (see Fig. 4). The lower ends of the plates 39 and 40 engage the rack blocks 41 and 42 (see Fig. 3) on the base part of the machine. These blocks are normally pressed upward by the coiled springs 43 and 44 in order to always maintain the sets v i of gears in mesh by following up the lifting side. elevational view of the action of the springs 38,- which support the weight of thearms 33 and 34.
Referring now to the construction ofthe 39 designates the base part which is secured to the bed plate 1 by the bolts 40. The blank from which the type is .to be made is indicated at 41. r This blank is rigidly held in place by which is located at the rear side of the base part 39. This screw forms an abutment for the housing which receives the die blank clamping jaws 42 and 43. 45 is a loose slidable pin in the forward part of the holder. This pin is engaged by the threaded rod 46 which is operated by the handle 47 on the arm part 48.
Secured to the arm part 48 is a second arm part 49 whose right hand end 49' engages the arm 50 of the bell crank lever which is pivoted to the base part at 51. The other arm 52 is connected to a link 53, which link is connected to the rod or shaft 54 at 55. Two pins, 56 and 57 are secured to the shaft 54 and are located directly in the rear of the horizontally swinging or pivoted frame blank carrying member 58, which is pivotally secured to the base piece 39 by means of the pivot screw 59. The position of this pivot screw is made adjustable by means of the set screw 60. A second swinging frame member is indicated at 61, which is .pivoted to the base at 62.
The operation of the blank carrying holder or frame may be described as follows: Consider the parts in the position shown in Fig. 3 and it is understood that the operation of forming the letter in the blank 41 by the matrix 34 is completed and it is desired to remove the finished or formed blank from the machine. The operator turns the handle 47 toward the right hand. This operation removes the pressure from the pin 45 and blank o'lampingq'aws 42 and43. Alt the same time the arm 49 turns about its pivot 49 and strikes the arm 50 of the bell crank lever causing the link 53 to turn the shaft 54v and the pins 56 and 57 carried thereby to tip or rock forward and strike the blank.
carrying frame die housing 58, causing it to turn on the pivot 59 along the dotted line 58. The operator can now conveniently remove the finished type blank 41 from the holder. After the blank is removed, he swings the other blank carrying frame 61 about its pivot pin 62 into operative position under the matrix 34. The handle 47 is swung back into a horizontal position by means of which the new blank is clamped into position ready for action by the matrix member 34 which receives pressure in a direct line through the action of the cam 10, rocker arm 16, crosshead 21, and oscillatin block 27. The positions that the blocks 27 and 31 assume is shown in Fig. 4, where a rocking or rolling and traveling fulcrum is produced by the eccentric indicated at 5 in this figure. After the blank 41 in the swinging frame 61 is formed, it is swung outward into the position shown in Fig. 3. Meanwhile, the left hand frame 58 is beingsupplied with another blank 41 ready .to be formed while the frame 61 is being emptied. The frames 58 and 61 are swung into opera tive position by hand.
It will be observed that. by reason of the racks on the parts 25 and 42, abutments are formedbetween which the. oscillating block 27 and matrix block 31 are operated by the eccentric 5. In other words, they react to cause the oscillating movements on the racks 25 and 42. The fulcrum points will travel or change on these racks simultaneously with the oscillating movements of the parts 27 and 31 while the roller 18 is on the level or dwell part of the cam 10. Two movements are therefore imparted to the blocks 27 and 31, that of oscillation and that of' translation. The axis of the matrix holding member 31 changes or travels when the arms 34 and 33 are operated.
What I claim is:
1. In a type forming machine, the combination with a holder for a blank, of a matrix cotiperating with the blank, means for exerting direct pressure on the matrix and including a rockable member having teeth on its opposite edges, and means for rocking said member.
2. A type making machine, comprising in combination with a suitable holder for the blank, of a matrix member cotiperating with the blank, devices for transmitting pressure to the matrix and including a drive shaft, a rocker lever, a cam between the shaft and lever, a crosshead operated by the lever, a rockable member between the matrix and crosshead. and means for reciprocating the matrix for rocking the rockable member.
3. A type forming machine, comprising in combination with the blank, a suitable holder for the blank, a matrix member, devices for transmit-ting pressure in a direct line through the axis of the matrix to the blank said holder having a changeable axis.
4. A type forming machine, comprising in combination with a rockable block, of means for rocking the block, including a shaft, an eccentric thereon, arms operated by the eccentric, a crosshead, gear devices between the crosshead and the arms, and means for automatically maintaining the gear devices in mesh.
5. A type forming machine, comprising in combination with a rockable block, of means for rocking the block, including a shaft, an eccentric thereon, arms operated by the eccentric, a crosshead, gear devices between the crosshead and the arms, and means for automatically maintaining the gear devices in mesh, said means including a rack and springs for moving the rack toward the block.
6. A holder for the purpose described, comprising a pivoted frame, a pair of jaws therein, a set screw against which one of the jaws rests, a member engaging the other jaw, and means including an operating handle for moving the frame about its pivot, and into an inoperative or filling position.
7. In a type blank holder, the combination with a movable frame, devices for moving the frame, including a shaft, a part thereon, a bell crank lever operated by said part, and. members operated from said lever for engaging and moi ing the frame when the shaft is operated. v
8. In a type forming machine the combination with aholder for a matrix member, a rockable block, a crosshead engaged by said block, and devices for rocking the block from the holder of the matrix carrying member.
9. In a type forming machine, the combination with a matrix carrying member, of a crosshead, a gear thereon, a rockable block having gears engaging the gears of the crosshead, gears on said member and engaged by the gears of the block, devices for rocking the block from said member. whereby when said block is operated pressure may be transmitted from the crosshead to the matrix carrying member during the rocking movements of the block.
10. In a type forming machine, the combination with a matrix carrying member, of a crosshead, a gear thereon, a rockalole block having gears engaging the gears of the crosshead, gears on .said member and engaged by the gears of the block, devices for rocking the block from said member, whereby when said block is operated pressure may be transmitted from the crosshead to the matrix carrying member during the rocking movements of the block, and means for maintaining the gears constantly in mesh, including a spring mounted gear rack which is engaged by the gears of the matrix carrying member, said rack serving to transmit motion to the rocking block.
11. In a type forming machine, the combination with a blank, a holder frame therefor, means for locking the blank in the holder, said means including-a swinging arm or handle having a thread thereon, a pivotally mounted arm 'in which said arm is mounted, said pivotally mounted arm serving to swing the holder frame into-an inoperative position.
