TILE-MAKING MACHINE.

To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ALFRED H; RUsH, a citizen of the United States,- residing at Phoenix'ville', in the county of Chester and State of Pennsylvania, have invented cer-' tain new anduseful Improvements in Tile- Making' Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This inventionrelates t'otile making machines, and it comprises means for forming the body of the tile, means for applying coloring matter to the surface of the tile, means for smoothing the surface of the tile, and means for ejecting the tile from the machine.
An object of the invention is the pro vision of a machine having a: former consisting of side and end walls adapted to receivea platen to formthe lowerface of the tile, and areciprocatingmember adapted to pass over the former to cut the upper surface of thetile.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a pivoted locking member adaptedto engage one end of the tile to hold it in position, and combined meansfor releasing said member and raising the tile from the machine.
A further object of the invention is the provision of means for applying coloring matter'to the surface of the tile and smoothing the surface after the coloring matter has been applied.
The coloring matterisarranged in powdered form in a receptacle having a perforated bottom which is mounted to swing over the tile in the former, and is loosely supported to permit vibration to sift the coloring matter on to the surface ofthe tile.

Referring to the drawings the reference numeral 1 designates thelegs of the ma chine which are adaptedto'receive and support a pair of longitudinal side bars 2. A substantially rectangular supporting frame is formed of substantially L-shaped beams 3, the ends of which are secured to the legs and side bars in any suitable manner. This supporting frame is adapted to receive and support a former which consists of vertical walls 1, and a platen 5 adapted to be received within the vertical walls. Referring to Figure 5 of the drawings, the platen consists of a" substantially flat plate having offset end portions 6, and provided with suitable ribs 7 to produce a tile of a desired design. A reciproeating. member 8is mounted on the side bars and is adapted to move over a body of cement arranged in the former to produce an upper surface conforming tothe surface produced'by the platen 5. The member 8 is provided withsuitable grooves and is adapted to slide upon the side bars. The rearward movement of this member is limited by a stop 9, arranged adjacent the rear end of one of the side bars. Suitable brackets 10 are arranged adjacent the rear end of the member 8, adapted to receive and support a shaft 11. A supportingframe 12 is pivotally mounted on this shaft. As shown, the'fran'oe is provided with a pair of arms'13 and abushing 14 arranged at the ends of the arms and adapted to surround the shaft'.- A latch 15 is pivotally mounted on the pin"- 16, carried" by one of the arms 13, and this latch is? adapted to engage a notch 17, in one of the side bars of the frame 8 to retain the supporting frame in raisedposition The supporting frame is provided with apair of depending bearing arms 18 arranged adjacent each side and these are'adapted to: receive stub shafts 19 .pivotally supporting a cutter block 20. The cutter block is provided with a lower face 21 of a design similar to the designofthe platen-5, to produce the desired configuration on the upper face of the tile. As stated, the cutter block is pivotally supported in the supporting frame. 12, but means are provided whereby the cutter block may be locked to the supporting frame to prevent independent movement. is shown (see Figure 4),.the forwardend of the cutter block is provided with a shoulder 21 and a bar 22 is received in this shoulder and projects upwardly therefrom. This bar carries an operating handle The supporting frame is provided with a projecting tooth 23 adapted to engage notches 24 or 25, carriedby a latch'26. As shown, this latch is pivoted on the handle by means of a pin 27 andis normally forced toward the supporting-frame by a spring 28. An'opcrating member 29 is also pivoted on the-handle 23 by means of a pin 30 and this member is provided with a proection 31, engaging one end 32 of the latch. The operatinginem'ber '29 is provided with a finger grip 33, to permitoperation of the latch. The cutter bar may be vertically adjusted by means of an adjusting screw 34 carriedby the supporting frame provided with a lock nut 35 and may be angularly adjusted bymeans of an adjusting screw 36 carried by the supporting frame and having alooknut 37. The forward end of the cutting bar is provided with a cutting edge 38.

A shaft 39 is mounted in suitable bearings arranged on the front legs of the machine, and this shaft is adapted to support a locking member 40. The locking member extends to the top of the machine and is provided with a pairof legs 41 having suitable bushings 42 on their lower ends adapted to receive the shaft. A'substantially L-shapedplate 43 is carried on the upper end of the locking member and the horizontal portion of this plate is provided with an edge 44 adapted to project beyond the adjacent edge of the frame. When a tile 45 is arranged in the former and the reciprocating'member 8 is moved forwardly, it engages the outer edge 46' of the Lshaped plate forming ashoulder 47 of cement beneath itto lock the tile in the former. The L-shaped plate is provided with a pin 48, which is adapted to project through an opening in the plate 4 to form a nail receiving opening in the tile. The locking member is forced tothe unlocked position shown in Figure 6 'of the drawings by means of a. spring 49, one end of which isreceived by 3/ Stud 50, carried by locking member and the other end received by a stud 51, carried by the frame of the former. The locking member is provided with a latch 52 pivotally mounted on a pin 53, carried by the arms 41, andthe inner end of this latch passes through an opening'in a sleeve 54, carried by'the frame of the former. As showii,th'elatch is provided with a latch tooth 55, which is adapted toengage the inner edge of the sleeve-54 when in locked position (see Figure 4). The locking member is provided with an operating member 56,- which is loosely mounted on a bolt'57 to permit slight relative movement of the locking member-and the member 56. The member 56 passes through the guide 57 and is provided with a cut-out portion 58. As shown, oneend of the cut-out portion is provided with an inclined wall59.
A pair of shafts 60 are mounted in suitable bearings beneath the former and these shafts are provided with crank arms 61, connected by a link 62. One of the-shafts isprovided with a crank 63, whereby operation of the cranks willoscillate the two shafts in unison. g I 1 The shafts are provided with combined latch releasing and lifting members. 64, which are secured to the shafts to revolve therewith. Each of these members consists of an arm- 65 which is adapted to be received its have no effect on the operation of the ma chine. The members 64 are further provided with a radially extending portion 66having a pair of projections 67 and 68. The projection 67 is-adapted' to engage the end of latch 52 and raise it so that the bottom of the tooth 55 will clear the opening in the sleeve 54, and permit the spring 49 to move the locking inember outwardly. Further revolution of the shafts inia clockwise direction' causesthe projection 68 to engage the bottom of the platen, as shown in Figure 6 ofthe drawings and raise it to permit reiiio'val of the tile.
One of the legs of the machine is'provided with a bracket 68. This bracket is adapted to receive a plate 69, having a bearing 70 v a formed thereon. j second bearing 71 is arrangedin alin'ementtherewith. 'The apparatus for holding the coloring matter is mounted on this shaft and is adapted to be swung from the position shown in Figure 1 of the drawings to the position above the formenshown in Figure 3 of the-drawings.

The arm 76 is provided with a notch 7 S which is adapted to receive the adjacent bar 2 of the machine when the device is in operative position (see Figure The bars 2 are provided with adjusting screws 79 which are suitably supported in the legs of the machine and are provider with lock nuts 80.
The apparatus for holding the coloring niatter consists of a box 81 provided with a perforated bottom 82. This box is adapted tobe arranged over the frame 72 and is provided with guide members 83" arranged on opposite sides and adapted to retain the box against transverse movement with respect to the frame. As shown, one of these members is provided with a notched end 84, adapted to be received in an elongated slot- 85 of the arm 73; Runners 86 are arranged on the under side of thebox and extend 1ongitudinally thereof. These runners are providedwith offset ends 87. The distance between the ends of the" runners is greater than the length of the frame which permits the box to be moved longitudinally of the frame to sift coloring matter through the perforated bottom 82. A chute 88' is arranged beneath the former, adapted to receive excess 1 material removed from the face of thetile by the cutter block. The material is conveyed to a suitable point and reused if desired.

At the same time, the arms 67 and 68 are lowered and the platen assumes a i'iermal position when placed in the former. The reciprocating member Sis first arranged with the tooth 23 in the notch 24. This positions the lower fac'e'QIof thecutter block 530 in a plane substantially parallel to the platen. The reciprocating member is moved forwardly in a raised position by holding the handle'23 up and is lowered when it reaches thepointwhere the face 46 of the locking member prevents further forward movement. The reciprocating member is then moved rearwardly overthe cement and the cutting edge 38 of the cutter block removes excess'material which falls into the chute 88. lVith the reciprocating member at the rear of the machine, the coloring apparatus is swung to the position shown in Figure 8 of the drawings and the box vibrated byhand to sift the desired amount of coloring matter on thesurfaceof' the tile; The finger piece 33 of the latch operating member 29 is then depressed torelease' the tooth 23. By swinging the handle'23' With the latchre-leased, the tooth 23 is caused'to enter the notch 25 which arranges the cutter bar at a slight angle as shown in Figure 4 of the drawings, and leaves the cutting edge 38 above the surface of the tile. The reciprocating member is then passed over the surface of the tile with the face 21 engaging the surface of the tile'to force the coloring material intothe surface of the tile and produce a smooth polished surface.
By revolving the shafts in a clockwise direction, the arm is first withdrawn from the recess 58 and the projection 67 then lifts the latch to release'it. The loclzing'member then'moves to the position shown in'FigurefS of thedrawings actuated'by spring 49, releasing the shoulder 47 of the'tile and the tile is then lifted by engagement of the projections 68 and the under surface of the platen. The tile is then removed and the operation repeated.
It is to be understood that'the form of my invention herewith shown and described is tobe taken asa'preferredexample of the same, and that various changes in theshape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to-"without departing from'the spirit of the invention or the scope ofthe subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A tile making machine COHIPIlSiDg a former having an'open top, said former being adapted to receive material to'form said tile, a'cutter bar adapted to be recipro cated over said former to remove excess material therefrom, andmeans for locking said former during the formation of said-tile.

A tile making machine comprising a former having an open top, said former being adapted to receive material to form aid tile, a cutter bar adaptedto be reciprocated over said former to remove excess material therefrom, means for locking said former during the formation of saidtil'e, and-means for raising said tiletoreleaseit from said former.

In a tile making machine, a former having an open top, a reciprocating member arranged above said former, a pivoted cutter bar carried by said reciprocating member, and means for supporting said cutter bar in eitherof two positions. 7
7. A tile making machine comprising a former having an open top, a cutter bar adapted tobe reciprocated over said former, and 'a pivoted locking member having a portion extending over said former to retain said former duringthe formation of said tile. 1

a pivoted locking member having a portion extending over said former to retain said said former to permit its removal therefrom, said means being adapted to release said piv oted locking member.
10. A tile making machine comprising a former having an open top, a swinging frame mounted over said'former, and a re-,
ceptacle carried by said'frame, said receptacle-being-provided with a perforated bottom and being further provided with depending guides on its sides and endsadapted to engage said frame, the end guides being spaced from each other a greater distance than the length of the frame to permit vibration of said receptacle;
having an open top, a member adapted to reciprocate over said former, a pivoted cutter bar carried by said member, said member being provided With'a tooth, and said cutter bar being provided with a plurality of notches to receive said tooth to permit adjustment of the angle of said cutter bar.

In a tile making machine, a former having an open top, a member adapted to reciprocate over said former, a pivoted cutter'bar carried by said member, said member being provided with a tooth,. and said cutter bar being provided with a plurality of notches to receive said'toot-h to permit adjustment of the angle of said cutter bar, and a latch to retain said tooth in engagement with one ofsaid notches. 13. A tile making machine comprising a former having an open top, a cutter bar adapted to be reciprocated over said former,
a pivoted locking member having a portion extending over said former, means carried by said locking member for forming an opening in the tile being formed, and common means for releasing said locking member and raising the tilein said former to permit its removal therefrom. p

18. A tile forming machine comprising a -former having an open top, a member mounted to reciprocate above said former,
a pivoted frame carried by said reciprocating member and adapted to be moved to operative and inoperative positions, a cutter block carried by said pivoted frame and normally arranged with its lower face parallel to the surface of the tile being formed, and means for tilting said block independently of said pivoted frame.
