Specification or Letters Patent.
Patented N v. 22, 1921.
Application filed January 8, 1921. Serial No. 434,615.
' To all whom it may concern! Be it known that I, JEFFERSON F. PIERCE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tampa, in the county of Hillsborough and Stateof Florida have invented a new and useful Washing-Machine, of which the following isa specification.
This invention relates to machines for washing clothes, dishes, etc., one of its objects being to provide a machine of thls character utilizing. a 'revoluble foraminous drum adapted to be held at any inclination and which is designed to beactuated by a jet of water, which can be heated, and which jet is directed with sufiicient force to cause the drum to rotate and thereby convey the clothes or other objects to be washed downwardly into and thence out of the body of water contained within the machine.
A further object is to provide a machine of this character which can also be utilized as a centrifugal drier.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the-description roceeds, the invention resides in the com- -iiination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departin from the spirit of the invention.
n the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of the machine, a ortion of the casing being broken away.
ig. 2 is a side elevation, a portion of the casing and drum being broken away. and said casing and drum being shown tilted.
Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section, the
- drum and casing being shown in the position indicated in Fig. l and the said drum being provided with an auxiliary basket to be used when dishes and the like are to be washed.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a base which can he supported on casters 2, this base being provided with standards 3 in which is journaled a shaft 4 provided, at its center, with a coupling 5. Arms 6 are secured to and extend downwardly from the ends of theshaft and carry clamping bolts 7 designed to work within arcuate slots 8 formed in blocks 9 which are arran ed on the latform 1. Thus it will be se en that the rims 6 can be swun to any desired angle and there held bytlghtening the bolts 7. Extending radially from the coupling 5 1s a bearing spindle 10 and mounted on the lower portlon of this spindle but held against rotatlon in any suitable manner is a cyl1ndr1cal casing 11 provided with .a suitable cover 12'. Slidably mounted in the wall of thls casing is a tubular arm 12 terminatmg 1n an ofi'set end 13 constituting a nozzle. The other end of the arm is connected by a flexible hose 14 to the outlet of a.rotary urnp 15 supported by the platform l. hls pump 1s adapted to be supplied with water through a pipe 16 extendmg from a heating coil 17 vwhich can be located above a burner 18 as shown. This c011 can be connected to casing 11 by a flexible hose 32 for returning water back to pump through heater coils and rinsing operations.
Journaled on the stem or spindle 10 is a sleeve 19 preferably provided with anti friction bearings such as indicated at 20. This sleeve extends upwardly from the center of a hub 21 from which radiate narrow blades 22 .constituting spokes. The outer-ends of the blades are connected to a rim 23 and upstanding from this rim is a cylindrical foraminous wall v24 forming a drum. Overlying the inner end portions of the blades or spokes 22 is an imperforate disk 25 and mounted on this disk and extending toward the center of the sleeve 19 is a cone 26.
When it is desired to use the machine for washing fabrics, the said machine is positioned with the casing 11 tilted as shown in Fig. 2. It is then partly filled with water as shown in said figure and the fabrics to be cleaned are placed within the drum 24 after which the cover 12 is placed on the casing. The pump 15 is then operated by means of an electric motor 27 connected to the shaft 28 thereof andwill force a jet of water through the arm 12 and the nozzle 13 and against the spokes or blades 22, thus causing the drum 24 to slowly rotate within the casing. Thus the fabrics will be brought downwardly into the body of watercontaining the dirt removing compound .and will subsequently be lifted therefrom, carried upwardly and again returned to the body of, water. The casing may be pro-,
, vided with a drain cock as through which of the blades 22 and under the disk 25. The pump 15 is then set in operation and the jet of water directed thereby into the casing 11 and against the blades 22 will cause the drum 24 to rotate at a high speed. Conseuently the fabrics contained within the drum will be whirled around in the casing 11 and the greater portion of water commingled therewith will be thrown outwardly by centrifugal force. After this operation another supply of running water can be placed in the casing 11, said casing tilted to the position shown in Fig. 2 and the operation continued with water running through until clothes are thoroughly rinsed and finished by the extracting process'as hereinbefore described. -A third operation may be effected thereafter by using bluing water after which, by partially drying the fabrics in the manner already described, the
cleaning operation is completed and the fabrics can be removed and dried in the usual manner.
If desired the machine can also be used for washing dishes. In this event there is provided onthe blades 22 a basket 32 -of foraminous material and which is in the form of a ring extending around the disk 25. The dishes and the like to be cleaned are to be plac ed in this basket and the drum rotated in the manner hereinbefore pointed out. 15
Obviously by adjusting the arm 12 longitudinally the speed of rotation of the drum 24 can be varied. The water shot from the nozzle 13 will pass between the blades 22 as long as the nozzle is located beyond the periphery of thedisk 25. When the nozzle is adjusted inwardly to position under the disk, however, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. '3, the water will not flow upwardly but will rebound from the disk 25 and flow directly to the outlet tube 32 if the same is open.
What is claimed is 1. In a washing machine an angularly adjustable casing, a drum mounted for rotation therein and adjustable therewith, said drum having a foraminous wall. a nozzle projecting into the casing, means for forcing a jet of Water through the nozzle and into the casing, and means carried by the drum c for cotiperating with the jet -to rotate the drum.
2. In a washing machine an angularlyadjustable casing, a foraminous drum mounted container and means for drawing water from said container back tothe' nozzle.
3. In a washing machine an angularly adjustable casing, a foraminous-drum mounted for rotation therein and adjustable therewith, radial blades constituting the bottom of the drum, a nozzle for directing a jet-of water against the blades to rotate the drum,
said nozzle being adjustable toward and from the axis of rotation of the drum tovary the speed of rotation and means for directing a jet of water to and through the nozzle and against the blades.
4. A washing machine including an angularly adjustable casing, a foraminous drum mounted for rotation therein and adjustable therewith, radial blades constituting the bottom of the drum, a nozzle, means for draining water from the casing into a suitable container, means for elevating water from said container and ejecting it through the nozzle against the blades to rotate the drum, said nozzle being adjustable toward and from; the axis of rotation of the drum to vary the speed of rotation of said drum.
5. A washing machine including an angularly adjustable casing, a foraminous drum mounted for rotation therein and adjustable.
therewith, radial blades constituting the bottom of the drum, means upon the inner portions of the blades for closing the spaces therebetween, a nozzle adjustable to position to direct a jet of water against the blades to rotate the drum at different speeds, and a pump for forcing water to the nozzle.
6. A washing machine including a casing, a foraminous drum mounted for rotation therein, blades carried by the drum, a nozzle adjustably mounted within the casing, for directing a jet of water against the blades to rotate the drum, said nozzle being adjustable toward and from the 'axis' of rotation Witnesses D.
