Be it known-that I, GUY FRANCIS EDDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Medford, in the county of Jackson and State of Oregon, have invented certain new 1elnd.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in washing machines and has for its principal object to provide a simple and efiicient'means whereby the clothes receiving and supporting member is adapted to be rotated, simultaneously. directing the supply of water centrifugally onto the clothes, means being further provided for returning the water passing through the clothes supporting member to the distributor arranged in the top of the clothes supporting member. i
A further object of the invention is to provide a washing machine of the above mentioned character, wherein a boiler and a heater therefor is associated with the washing machine for supplying hot water to the supply pipe for the clothes support-' ing member, means bein further provided for causing the water ischargedthrough the clothes supporting member to be either returned to the supply pipe or else returned to the boiler.
A further object of the invention is to provide a Washing machine of the above mentioned character, which is simple in construction, inexpensive, strong and durable and furthermore adapted for the purposes for which'it is designated.
Other objects and advantages of this in vention will become apparent during the course of the following description.

In the drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my. invention, the numeral 1 designates generally my washing machine, the same being principally rectangular in design in the manner clearly illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawing. Arranged adjacent one end thereof and extending vertically therein is the partition 2; which forms apair of compartments 3 and 4 respectively. Arranged within the compartment 3 and supported in spaced relation from the bottom 5 of the casing 1 is the false bottom 6,
the same having suitable openings 7 formed therein and provided with a centrally arranged openingaround which extends the flange 8. The false bottom 6 tapers gradually towards its center in the manner clearly illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawings and the purpose of this construction will be hereinafter more fully described.
Extending vertically within the compartment 3 and supported in any suitable manner by the bottom 5 and the false bottom 6 is the tubular housing 9. The housing extends upwardly through the opening provided in the false bottom 6 and adapted tobe supported Within the housing is the driven shaft 10. The lower end of the shaft is supported by the ball bearing 11 on the base 12 which is disposed below the bottom 5 of the casing and is supported by the supporting legs 13*in the manner as clearly illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawings. Suitable roller'bearings such as are shown at 14 are provided in the housing 9 and extends around the driven shaft 10 in the manner clearly illustrated in Figure 4 of the drawings. The n per end of the driven shaft 10 extends a ove the housing 9 into the upper chamber 15 formed in the compartcal drum 19. The cylindrical drum 19 is formed of sheet meta and is corrugated as is clearly illustrated in Figure 5 of the drawings, the same being further provided with a plurality of apertures 20 providing a means for permitting the discharge of the water therefrom in the manner as will be hereinafter more fully described. Arranged within the cylindrical drum 19 is the inner cylindrical drum 21 which is formed by providing a plurality of vertically extend ing rods 22, the same being arranged in spaced relation and' extending upwardly from the base 18 and having a retaining ring 23 receiving the upper ends thereof in the manner clearly illustrated in the drawings.
The space formed between the inner cylindrical drum 21 and the outer cylindrical drum 19 provides a means for receiving and supporting the various articles of apparel or cloths which are to be washed.
The upper edge of the outer cylindrical drum 19 is provided with an annular flange 24 and the same provides a means for receiving the cover 25. Suitable clamping bolts such as are shown at 26 are provided for securing the cover to the flanged upper edge of the outer drum 19, and any number of these securing bolts may be provided as is desired. The cover 25 is substantially conical shaped and the central portion thereof is adapted to support thereon the distributor-head 27. The distributor head 27 has the outlet pipes 28 diverging therefrom and the same are disposed downwardly into the inner drum 21 in the manner as clearly illustrated in Figures 2 and 3' of the drawings. The top of the distributor head 27 is open for receiving a supply of water inthe manner to be presently described.
For the purpose of rotating the driven shaft 10 and the drums carried on the upper end thereof and which are arranged within the upper chamber 15 of the compartment 3, I provide the lower end of the shaft 10 with the worm gear 29 which meshes with the gear wheel 30, the latter in turn meshing with similar gears and which are operated by a suitable motor shown at 31 and supported on the base 12. It is of course to be understood that the drums are mounted on the upper end of the shaft so as to rotate therewith and when the cover 25 is secured to the outer drum 19 the same will also be rotated. The upper portion of the compartment 4 provides what I term as a boiler or hot water tank and is designated by the numeral 32. A suitable supply of water is contained within the boiler and for the purpose of heating the same, I provide the burner 33 which may be of any conventional construction and a fuel supplying means which includes a fuel tank 34 and a fuel pipe 35 is associated therewith in the usual manner. A valve such as shown at 36 is associated with the fuel pipe 35 and extends laterally through the compartment 4 and through the front face of the casing so that The purpose of this arrangement is to provide a means for supplying hot water from the boiler to the lower chamber preparatory to supplying the same to the upper chamber 15 in the manner to be hereinafter more full described.
T e compartment 3 is provided with the cover 41 while the compartment 4 is provided with a hinged cover 42. The cover 41 for the compartment 3 is provided with a central opening 43 while the hinged cover 42 for the compartment 4 is provided with an opening 44.
Extending vertically through .the compartment 4 adjacent .the partition 2 is the pipe 45. The lower end of the pipe 45 extends below the bottom-5 and is connected to theoutlet end of a suitable rotary pump 46 supported on the base 12 and is adapted to be actuated by suitable gearing and the motor 31 in any well known manner. A supply pipe 47 is connected at its lower. end to the pump 46 and at its upper end to the bottom 5 whereby the same communicates with the lower chamber 37 in the manner clearly illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawings. The upper end of the pipe 45 extends through the top of the casing and has connection with a suitable fitting 48. The fitting 48 is adapted to support the pipe 49 lUU which extends over the top 41 of the compartment 3 and is provided with the downwardly e tending portion 50 which extends through the opening 43 and communicates with the distributor head 27 in the manner clearly illustrated in Figure 2. The oppo site side of the fitting 48 is adapted to support the lateral pipe 51 and the latter terminates into the downwardly extending portion 52. Arranged in the fitting 48 is a two-way valve such as is'shown' at 53 and the purposethereof will be presently de scribed.
Normally when the downwardly extend)- ing rtion 50 of the pipe 49 is disposed within the opening in the cover 41 and com- 'municates with the distributor head 27, the
lateral pipe 51 is disposed upwardly and out of engagement with the boiler 32 and the. two-way valve is so actuated as to' cut off the supply to the ipe 51 and causing the fluid to pass from t e pipe 45 through the fitting 48 and into the pipe 49. Inversely, when the downwardly extending portion 52 of the 1 pipe 51 is disposed in the opening proloTh - be hereinafter more fully escribed.
The operation of my washing machine may be briefly stated as follows The clothes to be washed are placed between the inner and outer drums 21 and 19 respectively and the cover 25 is then secured in position on the upper edge of the outer drum 19 in the manner heretofore set forth. The lateral ipe 49 is placed in the position as shown in l 'igure 2 of the drawings so that the depending portion 50 thereof extends through the opcning'43 in the cover 41 and communicates with the distributor head 27. The other lat eral pipe 51 will in this position be supported-out of engagement with the openin 44 and held in an inoperative position. The water in the boiler 32 is then heated'by means of the burner 33 and after the same has been heated for a suitable length of time the valve 39 is opened for operating the handle 40. This will permit the hot water in the boiler 32 to pass through the pipe 38 into the lower chamber 37. The motor 31 is then started and the water pump 36 will then draw ofl' the hot water from the lower chamber and feed the same through the pipe 49 into the distributor head 27. The driven shaft 10 will simultaneously be rotated through the medium of the gearing 30 and the worm gear 39. The drum carried by the upper end of the driven shaft 10 will also be caused to rotate therewith in the upper chamber 15 and as the hot water passing through the pipe 49 is discharged into the distributor 27, the same will be forced outwardly through the diverging pipe 28by centrifugal force causing the hot water to be discharged onto the clothing supported in the drums, thereby thoroughly washing the same. c
The water discharged'into the clothes will drain off through the openings 20 provided in the outer drum 19 and the water collect- .ed in the upper chamber 15 will be discharged through the drain openin 7 provided in the false bottom 6 into t 0 lower chamber 37 where the same is again delivered to the supply pipe 47 and the operation repeated, thus a continuous circulation of water through the compartment 3 is obtained. Additional hot water may be delivered to the lower chamber 37 from the boiler 32 by the actuation of the valve 39 in the manner heretofore set forth.
After the clothes have been thoroughly will washed by the centrifugal action of the water, the pipe'49 is brought out of engagement with thecover 41 and the pipe 51 is' lowered so that the depending portion 52 extendninto' the opening 44 provided in the cover 42. This action simultaneously cuts off the supply of water from the pipe 1 45 to the pipe 49 and communicates the pipe 45' with the pipe 51. The water thus drained from the upper chamber and the drums supported therein and which is discharged into the lower chamber 37 will be delivered by t the pum through t In this manner all the water will be drained from the whenremoved therefrom will be. dry. that a washing machine has been provided which is of such a construction as to enable clothes to be easily and efficiently washed, thus saving considerable time and labor, the operation of the washing machine bein very inexpensive. The simplicity of y be readily disassembled whenever desired.
While I have shown the preferred embodiment of that various changes in the size, shape and evice furthermore enables the same to arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention' and the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is v 1. A washing machine comprising a cas' ing, a clothes receiving means supported therein, means for rotatin the same, a water supply tank communicating with said casing, a supply pipe extending from said casing, a pump associated therewith, a discharge pipe extending from said pump, the

A washing machine comprising a casing, a false bottom arranged therein forming an upper and lower chamber'respectively, said false bottom having drain openings provided therein, a shaft extending vertically through said lower chamber and into the upper chamber, a clothes receiving means mounted on the upper end of said shaft, means for rotating said shaft and the clothes receiving means carried thereby, a water supply boiler communicating with the lower chamber, a water supply pipe extending from the lower chamber, a pump associated therewith, a discharge pipe extending from said pump, the opposite end of said discharge pipe extending into the top of the upper chamber, and a water distributor head carried by said clothes receiving means and communicating with the discharge end of said discharge pipe.

A washing machine coluprisin a casing, a clothes receiving means rotatably sup ported thereln comprising a base having a conical centra portion, an outer drum of ing, a clothes receiving means rotatably supported therein, comprising a base having a conical central portion, an outer drum of sheet metal supported on said base, said drum being corru ated and provided with a plurality of per orations, an inner drum spaced therefrom and formed of vertical rods extending upwardly from said base, said rods being spaced from each other, a retaining ring supported on the upper end of said rods, a conical cover mounted on the upper edge of the outer drum, a water distributing head supported in the apex thereof, discharge pipes diverging downwardly therefrom and into said inner drum, said distributor head adapted for communication with a water supply.
