To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RoY E. GRAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Collars, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to collars and more particularly to that type of collars formed of a double thickness of material, generally referred to as turn-over collars.

It has been found that with the present known types of collars, and more particularly with collars wherein the edges are widely separated in the front, the necktie fails to cover the head of the collar button, which extends through the flaps of the collar and is visible, marring the finished appearance of the collar. The collar button is more prominent in higher collars, since the knot of the necktie will be above or below it, and it is more noticeable when a bow tie is used.

p The object of my invention is to provide a collar constructed in such a manner that the head of the collar button will not be visible between the edges of the collar, in front, irrespective of the height of the collar or the, type of necktie worn, but at the same time so constructed as to be readily put on and removed.

I will now describe a preferred embodiment of my invention in detailwith reference to the accompanying drawings, in

The band portion a is extended, at each end,'beyond the ends of the turned over portion to provide overlapping ends at and e.

The end 03 is provided with the usual collar button hole f, while a tab 9, provided with a button hole It, is sewed to the inside of the end 6, to form a pocket which is open at the bottom.

In practice, the collar is put on by engaging the rear collar button, carried by the neck band of the shirt, in the button hole I); the end 03 is brought to the front, and the front collar button engaged in the button hole f. The end 6 is then brought to the front and the button engaged in the hole It in tab 9. The end e is then tucked under the end of the overlapping portion of the collar and lapped over the end d. The head of the button lies in the pocket formed between tab 9 and the end 6 and is covered by the end e and is invisible from the front. After the end 6 is extended beneath the end of the turned-over portion a, the necktie is applied.

It will be noted that in my construction the head of the collar button is behind the end 6 and entirely invisible from the front, irrespective of the type of necktie worn, and the collar presents a perfectly finished appearance. It will be further noted that should the button holes become torn, the collar may be continued in service without the fact being observable, or in any way affecting the appearance of the collar.

Although I have referred to and described my invention in connection with turnedover collars, I do not wish to limit myself thereto as it is obvious that my invention is equally applicable to'collars of other types.

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:

A collar having a band portion the ends of which are adapted to overlap, said band having a button-hole therethrough intermediate its ends and a button-hole adjacent one ofits ends, there being a pocket formed near the other end of the band open at its bottom only, there being a button-hole formed in the inner portion of the pocket forming portions and covered by the outer pocket forming portion thereof, the arrangement 5 being such that the head of the collar button Will be Within said pocket and covered when the collar is secured to the shirt of the wearer, and the cover forming portion will be restrained against'movement by the inner portion of the pocket forming portions.
