UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. 1
mm. is. NEWMAN, or FIN LAY, onro.
Application filed November 6, 1919, Seriallio. 886,126. Renewed September 14, 1921. Serial No. 500,705.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EARL B. NEWMAN, a citizen of the United States, residin at i Findlay, in the county ofHancock and tabs by securing of which the following is a specification.
of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Lighting-Fixture,
This invention relates to improvements in lighting fixtures primarily designed for interior hghting and has for its object to provide a device of this character in which substantially all portions thereof which are exosed to view are constructed of wood wherey the character and finish of the wood may be varied according to the wood work or furniture of the room or apartment wherein the fixture is located to increase the esthetic value of the eneral appearance of the room armony of color, finish and design of the fixtures and furnishings.
Another object is the provision of a fixture of this character wherein the combustible wood is effectively protected against the action of fire and heat in a short circuit of the electrical conductors extending therethrough or from other causes by the provision of adequate fire-proofing material to the portions of the wood which are exposed to the electrical conductors.
With these and other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be clearly ap arent from the following specification ta en in connection with the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the improved fixture.
Fig. 2 represents a fragmentary enlarged sectional view through the sup orting base.
Fig. 2*is a sectional view of the eye bolt and spacing element.
Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal sectional view through a modification of the invention.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throu bout. the several views, the numeral 5 indicates asupportin canopy which is constructed of wood an in the spirit of the invention, it is evidentthat the character of the wood and general design of the canopy may be widely varied to secure harmony between visible details comparatively between the fixture of wood Specification of Letters Patent.

work or furnishings of the room. The canopy 5 is adapted to be supported from the ceiling of a room or. other apartment and is providedin its upper portion with a cavity 6 receiving a correspondingly shaped lining 7 of metal or other fire-proof material which i is preferably flanged as indicated at 8 to maintain it in position. The canopy 5 is formed with a plurality of diverging openings 9, the number of which may vary as necessity or preference may dictate and the wood casings or coverings 10 for the fireproof tubes or conduits 11 arefitted terminally in the apertures 9 and are preferably anchored at their extremities whereby the casings may be securely wedged in position and thereby firmly held in place. The tubes or conduits 11 are preferably constructed of metal or other rigid fire-proof material and are provided with threaded open upper extremities receiving nuts 12 which are arranged within the cu -like lining 6 and limit the downward longitudinal thrust of the tubes.
The lower extremities of the conduits 11 below the extremities of the casings 10 are provided with integral or attached depend ing eyes 13 which are linked in the circular apertured upper extremities 14 of eye bolts 15 positioned transversely through and adjacent the outer edge of an ornamental supporting and spacing element 16.
The lower extremities of the eye bolts 15 are provided with apertured heads 17 receiving the supporting members 18 of preferred types of incandescent lamp sockets 18 adapted to receive preferred types of lamps (not shown) for illuminating purposes. The canopy 5, conduit casings 10 and combined supporting and spacing elements 16 are constructed of wood, the character, design and finish of which may be readily varied, as will be understood, to properly harmonize with the woodwork or furnishings of the room or other apartment in which the fixture is located and the conductors whereby an electrical current is supplied to the lamps mounted in the sockets 18 are positioned through the conduits 11 and through longitudinal openings formed in the eye bolts 15, thereby obviating danger of injury to the woodwork or furnishings due to excessive heating of the electrical conductors.
Referring to the modification of the invem longitudinally therein.
tion illustrated in Fig. 3, the canopy is designed for attachment to a vertical wall to provide a side wall fixture, and the canopy is constructed of wood and provided in this instance, withan integral horizontal extension 21 constituting a casing or covering for the conduit 22 which is arranged The canopy" 20 is provided with a cavity for the reception of the electrical conductors in which is arranged a metallicfire-proof lining 23. One extremity of the conduit 22 is externally threaded and receives a nut 24 whereby it is maintained in position and the opposite extremity of the conduit is connected with an elbow 25 extending through the lower portion of the extremity'of-the casing or covering 21 and connected with an incandescent lamp socket 26 adapted to receive a preferred typxefifincandescent lamp (not shown). atI claim is:
' V 'In a lighting fixture of the" class described 7 provided with a plurality of diverging openings therein, wooden casings having fire proof metallic condults there1n fitted terminally 111 the diverging openings, and
threaded to receive securing nuts thereon 1 arranged within the hollow canopy, depending eyes carried by the lower extremities of said metallic conduits, an enlarged spacing element provided with a plurality of vertical apertures therein near its outer periphery, eye'bolts positioned within the said vertical apertures and connected to the depending eyes, and loosely connected depending sockets carried by the lower terminals of the said eye bolts and beneath the spacing element.
' In testimony whereofI afiix my signature hereto.
EARL B. NEWMAN.
