APPLICATION FiLi-IL ELECTRIC-LIGHTKNG FIXTURE.
Specificacon of Letters Patent.
Patented Application filed Decembr l, 1918. Se1ial No. 134.299.
ne ."innnn'r Con and ms of the nii;cd Statcs, 7 in the connty of Cool( and Statu o mois, have inventcd certain ncw and nscinl mpromments in Electrig Jighting ares i which the ioll n\ iiig :is a spa Tliis inve1. inn 1 l to improvements in electric lighting fixmres and n'hile certain featnres of the invention are applicable tu xvall or cciling fizztarcs, the invention refers more especially to a fixtnre to be used npon a pedestal lamp, such as a floor lamp, table lamp or the like.
A fixtnro ol this character incladcs a sl1ell or :asing and nipples projecting throngh opiiiii s" in the shell and thmaded t0 recciveand support the sonlts which carry thcincandescent lights. Difliculty has herctoiore l eon experienced with such fixtures l y rcason-oi tho fact l1at the nipples are sometimcs wrcnchcd from the shell by the electric lamp sockct recciving an accidental blow. It is one 0'! the objects of ominvention to produce a structure Wherein thc lamp-soclt-snppo 'ting: nipplcs are mountod in a novol and improwd mannor so that the fixinre xvill ne materially strcngthencd and the nipplos cann0t lie. torn :rom lhc shell.
Jnother objcct 035 OUT invention is to iniprove fi: tnre of this character by reducing the namber of parts to a minimum and in this connoction, the invention has reference to a spccial nnitarv bracltet devise Which is monnted Within the shcll and provides supports for the nipplcs and for the stud by which the cover of the shell is secured in place.

llcrctol'wro t-lwse nipples have boom 1ormcd scparac 'l'rom vacl1 othcr and l'rom the other parts of thv lixturcs and have been securcd in the opcnings in the slxcll by morely np sotting or riveting the nipples t0 clench them to the shell or by soldering the ni ples to the sl1oll. lt has bcon found in practice il1at it is impossible to fi the nigples in place in tlxis niannor with suflicicnt security in prcvent tlm nipplos froni boing wrenched or torn nul il ll1cir openilws in case an acci dental blmv U any consiuerable force is applied to the lamp socket. In our constructien the nipples are attached'to and are sup- -ported by the central washer-hke member part of the shade framework, the plate 14 having a central opning therein registcrng with a central opening in the shell cover 7.
' Such' cover=and shade trame are secured t0 the body ofthe shell by means of a threaded stud 16 passing u pwardly through said parts'and having an ornamental nut 17' threaded on its upper end above the plate 14. This threaded stud may be mounted in the shell in diferent ways, but preferably it is formed integral with the central washer 8, the stud proper being carried by a finger 18 extending upwardly from one edge of the washer. The stud may be formed by curling, drawing or rolling the end of the place of sheet metal from which the finger as a whole is made.
. By making the central Washer 8, nipples 10 and stud 16 out of a single piece of sheet metal, a rigid, cheap, convenient and very satisfactory bracket device is provided and many of the diflicnlties experenced with "prior .devices are liminated. It Will be noted that the finger 18 for the threaded stud takes up but ery little room and leaves ample space above the washer t0 receVe the wires which lead up through the stem 3 and branch through the nipples 10 to the electric sockets.
Inasmnch as the specialbrackct device in- .cluding the stud 16 and nipples 10 is fixed npon the stem 3, it will be seen that the shell 6 Will be secured to the stem through the nedium of the nipples and when the mat 17 .is trned down on the stud t0 bear upon the cover for the shell, the cover and the shell will be firmly clamped without any special means for attaching the shell to the stem 3.
The washer 8 and nipples 10 may thus conprising a. central supporting member,
stitute means for attaching the shell to the stem, While the stud 16 and nul; 17 constitute means for binding the parts in place. We claim as our invention: l. In-a lighting fixture, a braket comrality of Projecting arms, and a socket-supporting mpple carried by each of said arms, said arms being integral with said central member.
2. I1ia lighting fixture, a unitary bracket device comprising a washer, a plurality of a pluprising a Washer, a plurality. of amis in-' tegral therewith, a socket-supporting nipple carried by each of said arms,*a stud, and a snpporting finger integral therewith and in tegral With said washer.
5. In a lighting fixture, a unitary bretckct device comprising a central supporting member, a plurality of nipples, and a threaded stud all formed in a unitary piece. 6. In a lighting' fixture, a bracket comprlsing a centrally located washer, a plurality of radially projecting arms integral therewith, a lampsupporting nipple carried by each of said arms, a stud axially alined with said washer, and a supporting tangue therefor integral With said washer.
7. An electric lighting fixture comprising, in combination, a shell having apertures therein, nipples in said apertures, and a supporting member in the shell to which said nipples are secured.
8. An electric lighting fixture comprising, in combnation, a shell having apertures therein, nipples extendingthrnngh the apertures, a hollow supporting stem, and a central supporting member mounted on said stem and carrying said nipples.
l 9. An electric lighting fixture comprising, in combinaton, a shell having apertures therein, npples passing through said aper tares, a supporting stem, and a Washen mounted on said stem and formed integral With said nipples.
10. An electric lighting fixture comprising, in combination, a casing having aper, tares ther en, a central supporting" member in the casing, and nipples radially pos, tioned with respect to said central supporting me: 1ber and integral therewith, said n}ipples assing through the apertures in the s 1el 11. An electrc lghting fixtnre comprising, in combination, a shell having apertures therein, a central supporting member in the shell, npples formed integral With said central member and passmg ont through'said apertures, lamp sockets carried by said nipples outside of said shell, and a hollow supporting stem upon which said shell and said central member'are mounted.
