Wood-Blocks for Flooring. No. 139,662. y Patentedj newmszsy Ali. PHoTa-l/I'HDGRAPHIL ca lm'amims's Pkocsss,
UNITED STATES FRANICDOUBRAVA AND JOHN STAIB, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
lMPROVEMENT IN WOOD BLOCKS FOR FLOORING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139,662, dated June 10, 1873 application filed April 16, 1872.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, FRANK DOUBRAVA and JOHN STAIB, of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have jointly invented an Improved Wood Flooring, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top view of one of the two duplicate cross-pieces used in making a single block of the flooring. Fig. 2 is an edge or side View of the same. Fig. 3 is a top view of one of the four similar V-shaped pieces used in making a single block of the flooring. Fig. 4 is an edge view of the block shown in Fig. 3 from the apex of the block. Fig. 5 is a top view of one complete block of the flooring. Fig. 6 is a view of the block shown in Fig. 5 in section through the dotted line as w.
The two cross-pieces a a have grooves a along their entire length upon the sides or edges. They have each a mortise, a at the center of their lengths so that they can be fitted together as seen in Fig. 5, so that their two broad sides are flush. The V-shaped pieces b have a tongue, b, along two of their sides which just fit into the grooves in the edges of the cross-pieces, making both sides of the block shown in Fig. 5 flat and even.
The cross-pieces and the V-sha-ped pieces may be united together by glue or any suitable cement. We purpose to join all the pieces together so as to form one square block, as seen in Fig. 5, before laying them down as flooring. These completed blocks can be themselves tongued and grooved together when laid down, or blind-nailed or laid in cement or glue.
The invention consists in the peculiar combination of pieces of which we form one complete square block, the mortising together of the cross-pieces giving strength and unity to the block.
We are aware of the patent No. 12,276, granted to Louis Francis Groebl, January 23, 1855, and We disclaim all intention to claim as our invention the construction and combination therein shown.
We claim as our invention- A's a. new article of manufacture, a flooringblock composed of the two cross-pieces a a mortised together, and the four V-shaped pieces b b b b, the whole tongued and grooved together, substantially as described.
