Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 1, 1921.
Application filed April 4, 1919. Serial No. 287,438.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR L. GnLFFIN, a subject of the King of Great Brltain, resid- 'ing at Lubec, in the county of Washington and State of Maine, have invented new and useful Improvements in Saws, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in saws, the object being to provide an ordinary carpenters handsaw, so as to permit of its use as a square and to combine therewith a pencil-holder, so that a pencil may be at all times convenient for use.
For this purpose the saw is provided along its back edge with graduations representing inches and fractions thereof, and has the inner edge of its handle formed w th a straight edge disposed at an angle of ninety degrees with respect to the saw back to provide a butt or stop for the square, while the handle has secured thereto each end of a U-shaped member which is adapted to receive a pencil, the said pencil being frictionally held therein by means of a spring secured within the U-shaped member and adapted to yieldingly engage the pencil upon opposite sides thereof.
The invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings: 7 t
Figure l is a side elevation of a saw constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the blade of the saw is indicated at 10, the said blade being provided along the edge of its back with graduations 11, suitably numbered and representing inches and fractions thereof. The handle of the saw is indicated at 12,'and is formed with the usual hand grip 13. The opposite end of the handle is formed with a straight edge 14, which is disposed at an angle of ninety degrees with respect to the back edge of the saw blade, a shoulder being thus formed which cooperates with the said back edge to provide a square. Secured to the handle 12 is a pencil holder, the latter comprising a U-shaped member 15, having each of its ends secured upon opposite sides of the handle 12, as shown at 16. This forms a loop for the reception of a pencil 17. Secured within the U-shaped member is a spring, the latter projecting upon opposite sides of the loop and being provided with downwardly bowed portions 18 and outwardly curved extremities 19. These extremities are adapted to bear upon the pencil 17 and the oposite sides of the U-shaped member or loop 15 to yieldingly hold the pencil in position.
It will be seen from the foregoing description and accompanying drawings that the invention provides an exceptionally handy and convenient tool in which a number of elements which are generally used together are associated, so as to be at all times handy for use.
Various changes may be made in the form, proportions, and minor details of construction of the invention; and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is:
The combination with a tool handle having curved and rounded edge portions and flat sides, of a U member including outwardly extending end portions conforming tothe edge portions of the handle, said U member forming a pencil holding device, and a spring passing through the U member in a transverse direction and positioned for engaging the pencil in a longitudinal direction and holding the latter in contact with the edge portion of the handle not engaged by the hand when the tool is in use, the point of the pencil resting within a curved edge portion of the handle.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
EDGAR L. GRIFFIN.
