LAMP SHADE lAND TESTER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VIRGIL A. GUY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Englewood, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp Shades and Testers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable othersskilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to a device for use with an electric lamp for the pur pose of shading same and supporting the lamp in a convenient manner, as well as enabling the lamp to be used for testing electrical circuits, whereby the device is conveniently used in doing work or making repairs on an automobile, as well as for testing electrical circuits thereof.
The invention has for its object the provision of such a device including a shade for the lamp having means for engaging the socket member or sleeve of the lamp, and means for supporting the shade and enabling electrical circuits to be tested, so that the device isuseful for making repairs or adjustmentson an automobile in the dark, as well as enabling the ignition circuit, illuminating circuits and the like to be tested.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which'will be apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides 1n the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes can be made within the scope of what is clamed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein' Figure 1 is a front view of the device as applied to the lamp socket member or sleeve, showing the electrical circuit in diagram.
Fig. 2 is a view taken at right angles to the line of view in Fig. 1, showing the shade in longitudinal section.
Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 3--3 of Fig. 1.
The device is used with a lamp socket member or sleeve 5 in one end of which the lamp 6 is fitted and secured, and in the other end of which member or sleeve a removable plug 7 is fitted and secured for the connection of an electrical conductor or wire 8 to one terminal of the lamp. at 10, such as the frame of an automobile.
In carrying out the invention, there is provided a dished metal shade 11 to sur- "round the lamp with one side of the shade open for directing the light rays to the point desired. The inner end of the shade 11 merges into the neck or clamp 12 of reduced size and extending through an arc of slightly greater than one half of a circle to snugly embrace the member or sleeve 5 for holding the shade in position over the lamp. In order to more firmly secure the shade to the socket, the edges of the neck or clamp 12 have outstanding ears 13 through which a bolt 14 extends, whereby said bolt in being tightened will contract the neck or clamp 12 to firmly embrace the member 5.
A spindle 15, formed from wire or other suitable material, projects longitudinally outward from the outer end of the shade 11, and is provided at it basal end with a curved portion 16 soldered, welded or otherwise secured to the shade 11 at one side, and terminating in an offset portion or hook 17 at said side of the shade. The shade 11 in clamping the member or sleeve 5 will be electrically connected to the corresponding terminal ,of the lamp 6, and the spindle 15 and hook 17 are also in electrical connection with said .shade and lamp, so that when the hook or spindle are used for supporting the lamp from the frame of the automobile or other part in electrical connection therewith, this will close the circuit of the lamp 6 to keep it lighted. The hook 17 can be conveniently used for hanging the shade and lamp up at various points on the automobile, and the spindle 15 can be inserted in a hole or between two parts for supporting the shade and lamp, when the hook 17 cannot be used, sothat said spindle and hook will enable the lamp to be supported at the various points of the machine in a convenient manner for directing the light to the point at which work is being done.
The spindle 15 is also used to advantage in testing the electrical circuits of the automobile. The end of the spindle is pointed, so as to be readily engaged with the conductors or wires of the several circuits, ..for testing same. Thus, if the spindle engages a conductor which is grounded, the lamp 6 will be lighted, whereas if the conductor is in an open circuit, the lamp will remain extinguished. It is thus possible to test the several circuits for grounds, short circuits, open circuits and the like. The spindle projecting longitudinally beyond the shade and socket member in longitudinal alinement with said member, enables the socket member to be readily held in the hand for directing the spindle to the wires or points where tests are to be made.
Having thus described the invent on, what is claimed as new is 1. A device of the character described comprising a lamp shade havingmeans for embracing a lamp socket member for electrical connection with one terminal of the lamp, and means on said shade in electrical connection therewith for supporting the shade and for engaging conductors of electrical circuits for testing same.
2. A device of the character described comprising a lamp shade merging at its inner end into a neck of arcuate section and adapted to snap over and embrace a lamp socket member for electrical connection with one terminal of the lamp, and means on the shade in electrical connection therewith for supporting the shadevand for engaging conductors of electrical circuits for testing same.

A device of the character described comprising a lamp shade having means for embracing a lamp socket member for electrical-connection with one terminal of the lamp, and, a supporting hook carried. by said shade at one side thereof and in electrical connection with the shade toengage a supporting member and close the circuit of the lamp for testing purposes. A device of the character described comprising a lamp shade having means at one end for embracing a lamp socket memher to electrically connect the shade to one terminal of the lamp, and a spindle extending from the opposite end of the shade for supporting the shade and for use in testin electrical circuits.
