ELECTBICAL IGNITING DEVICE FOR"AU'1'OMOBILE-LAMPS AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented May 18, 1915.
Application filed .Tune 30, 1-914. Serial No. &18,240.
To all whom it may concern Be it knownthat I, FRANCIS N. Fox, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Voodstock, in the county of Champagn and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electrical Igntmg Devices for Automobile-Lamps andthe like; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descripton of the invention, such as will enable others sklled in the art to which it appertams to make and use the same.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in electrical ignting devices for automobile lamps and the like and has for its primary object to provide a device of this character which will be of improved and simplified Construction as well as highly efficient in use.
Another object is to provide a device of this character including a novel form of insulating member within which the sparkng members are secured and a simple form of clamp for clamping said members atthe proper angle upon the body of the burner This invention has for a further object to provide a device of this character in which the parts will be arranged n such manner that the circuit may be readily closed to operate the igniter and thereby form a spark adjacent the opening in the arm of the burner.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists n certain novel features of Construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings,
- in which- Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view of the complete device, Fig. 2 is a'side elevation thereof, Fig. 3 is a transverse detail section on the plane of line 3-3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4: is a detail longitudinal section on the plane of line 1 4: of Fig. 2.
Referring in detail to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates a solid insulating member formed of hard rubber or other suitable material and having the reinforcing bands 2 secured around its upper and lower ends to reinforce the device and protect the ends thereof. The solid insulating member 1 has a clamp ring 3 engaged therearound and pivotally connected with a similar clamp ring 4 by means of a set screw 5 or the like engaged through the interlocked oppositely directed perforated ends of said rings 3 and 4: to secure the solid insulating member 1 in position at the proper angle with respect to the burner body 6 from the upper ends of which e`xtend the diverging burner arms 7 having suitable burner openings' 8 adjacent which a spark may be formed when a circuit is completed through the spaced wires 9 extending longitudinally in the solid insulating member 1.
The spaced wires 9 have their upper free ends 10. directed toward one another and spaced a slight distance apart, whereby a spark will be formed between said ends 10 to gnite the gas escaping from the burner opening 8 adjacent which said ends 10 are positionedr The lower ends of the spaced wires 9 have engaged therewith the inner ends of the radially directed pins 11 projecting from the opposite sides of the solid insulating member l adjacent the lower end 'thereof and having the nut 12 inserted therein, whereby the current conducting wires 13 may be secured upon said pins 11, one of the current conducting Wires 13 having a wire 14 connected therewith and leading to one pole' of a battery 15, upon the opposite pole of which extends a conducting wire 16 connected with an induction coil 17, which also has a wire 17' connected therewith and leading' to one point 18 of a circuit closing member, the switch 19 of which is connected with the point 20 to which the branch wire 21 is connected and extended to the wire 14. The
induction coil 17 is connected with the remaining wire 13 by means of the conn'ecting wire 22, whereby when the switch 19 is moved to operative position, the pionts 18 and 20 will be connected thereby completing a circuit through the battery 15 and the wire 21 to form the spark adjacent the burner openings 8, as previously described.
It will be understood that the battery 15, induction coil 17 and switch 19 may be positioned in any suitable places upon the machine. It will also be seen that the complete device will be highly efiicient in use as well as simple in Construction and operation and cheap to install.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in the details of Construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed or sacrificng any of the advantages thereof.
What is claimed iszi 1. A device of the class described, comprising the combination with a burner and an insulating wire support for sparking wires engaged over the burner; and a clamp member engaged around said burner, a clamp member engaged around said insulating wire support, said clamp members having interlocking ears, and means engaged throughsaid interlocking ears to secure the clamp members in adjusted position for the purpose of supporting the sparking wires in position over said burner.
2. A device of the class described comprising the combination with a burner and an insulating wire support having sparking wires projecting from. the same and engaged over said burner; and a clamping ring engaged around said burner and having spaced parallel ears directed outwardly from its opposite ends, a clamping ring engaged around said insulating member and having spaced parallel ears projectng outwardly from its opposite ends and engaged between the ears of the first mentioned clamping ring, and means engaged through the ears of the clamping rings to secure said clamping rings in adjusted position upon the burner and the insulating member and support the insulating member in proper position with respect to the burner to support the sparking wires over said burner.
In testimony Whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two ,witnesses 4 FRANCS N. FOX. witnesses M. L. SESSIONS, JOHN SoMERLoTT.
