ALEXANDER 'MCCULLOCH, OF GOVAN, SASKATCHEWAN, CANADA.
DOOR-LATCH.
To all whom it may concern:
"Be it known that I, ALEXANDER MOCUL- Loon, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Govan, in the county ofHumboldt and Province of Saskatchewan, Canada,'have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Latohes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in looking doors and more particularly in regard to locking garage doors, although the construction may be used for other doors besides garage doors. V
The object of my invention is to provide a locking means whereby the top, the bottom, andthe center of the door will be locked.
A further object is to provide a releasing means controlled by one handle. With these andother objects in view, the invention consists'i-n the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
Figure '1 is a sectional view of the door showing my improved locking means in position.
Fig. 2 illustrates a detail view of the looking means for the top of the door.
Fig. 3 illustrates a detail view of the look- I ing means for the bottom of the door.
Fig. 4 illustrates a detail view of the looking means for the center of the door.
Fig. 5 illustrates a perspective view of the operating member.
Referring to the drawings like numerals designate like parts in the various drawings.
6 indicates a doorframe of the usual construction having an opening 7 cut vertically Positioned in this opening is an upper arm 8 and a lower arm 9, made preferably of strip metal or rods having a transverse opening at either ends. The opening 7 is enlarged slightly at the upper end and considerably at the lower end to receive locking means in these ens larged ends.
The locking devices at the upper end of the door is provided with a key 10 having outwardly extending lugs 11. A spring 12 is positioned on the shank of said key and a washer 14 is slidably positioned on said spring near said shank the end of said shank is then flattened so as to keep the said washer 14: on the shank and further to pro Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 9, 1920. Serial' No. 402,110.
vide an opening 15 which is suitably connected to the upper end of the arm 8. The opposlte end of the key 10 extends outwardly past the plate 62 and is adapted to engage in any suitable opening in the door facing. This end may be beveled at one side as illustrated in Fig. 2. The washer 14 is seated in the top enlarged portion of the opening 7 so that when the arm 8 is pulled downwardly the key will be carried downwardly also tensioning the spring 12 against the washer 14, so as to cause the reaction of the key into'locking means.
Referring to the locking means at the lower end of the door I provide a casing 16 in which is slidably positioned a key 17 having outwardly extending flange 18 a coil spring 19 is fitted on said key between said flange 18 and said casing so as to tension said key in direction of arrow Fig. 3.
20 is a'lever pivotally connected in a casing as at 21, 'itsinner end being positioned under the flange .18 while its outer end is suitably connected with the lower end of the arm 9. When the arm 9 is pressed downwardly the inner end of the lever 20 is pressed upwardly drawing the extended end 22 into the casing, this extended end 22 fits into a suitable opening in the floor when in locked position.
23 is a casing suitably mortised near the center of the door frame and being provided with oppositely positioned openings 24 and 25. Positioned in these openings is a connecting bar 26 suitably connected at its upper end to the lower end of the arm 8 and at its lower end to theupper end of the arm 9. This connecting bar is provided with inwardly extending lugs 27 the purpose of which will be hereinafter mentioned- The casing 23 is further provided with openings 28 and 29 in the opposite sides to the openings 24 and 25.
29 is a key positioned in the openings 28 and 29 and tensioned in the direction of the arrow by means of a coil spring 30 positioned on the inner end of the key 29 pressingagainst the casing 23. The outer end 31 of the key 29 is normally positioned for locking in a door facing.
The casing is further provided on'its side with oppositely positioned openings into which the ends 32 of the operating member 33 are suitably journaled.
34 is a handle in the outer side of the casing 23 and suitably connected through the operating member 33 is a fixed position so that when the handle 24: is turned it will turn the operating member 33. The operating member is cylindrical in shape and is provided with a lug 36 extending radially therefrom. The outer end of this lug is rpositioned between the lugs 27. The operating member is further provided witha radially directed lug 37 which is normally positioned in front of the lug 35. When the handle 34 is turned the operating member 33, with its respective lugs 37 and 36, will press the key 29 into the casing and at the same time will operate the arms 8 and 9 so that they will pull the respective keys 10 and 22 from locked engagement.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction of my invention will be clearly understood and, therefore, a more extended explanation hasbeen omitted.
What I claim as new is:
In combination with adoor, a vertical opening formed in said door, an upper and lower arm positioned in said opening, a key in the upper end of said opening, said key having its inner end" attached to the upper end of said upper arm, a means for tensioning the other end of said key outwardly from said door, a key positioned in the lower end of said opening, a means for tensioning one end of said last mentioned key outwardly from said door, a means conconnected to the lower end ofsaid upper arm, said connecting bar having its lower end connected to the upper end of said lower arm, lugs extended inwardly from said conmeeting bar, a key reciprocatively mounted in said casing to operate in the opposite direction to said connecting bar, a tension for positioning one end of last said key to extend out past said casing, a lug formed on the upper side of last said key, a cylindrical operating member journaled in said casing, lugs radially positionedon said operating member, one of said lugs being positioned between the first mentioned said lugs and the other said lug being positioned in front of the lug on the last mentioned key and a handle suitably mounted in said operating member so that on the turningof the same the said keys will be pulled flush with the outer facing of said door.
In testimony whereof I affix signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ALEX. MoCULLOCI-I.
