Description

A. WALUS.
DOOR ADJUSTER.
APPLICATION man FEB.-5, 1921.

- INVENTOR. fl, W /m A TTORNEY.
UNITED STATES ANTANAS WALUS, 0F SHELTON, CONNECTICUT.
DOOR-ADJUSTER.
Application filed. February 5, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTANAS IVALUs, a citizen of Lithuania, residing at Shelton, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have inv nted certain new and useful Improvements in Door Adjusters, of which the following is a specification.
The main object of the invention is the provision of 'a device whereby a hinged door or the like may be quickly and securely retained in any desired open position.
The above and other objects will become apparent in the description below, in which like-named characters of reference refer to like-named parts in the drawings.
Referring briefly to the drawings, Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a door equipped with my device.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the circular rack forming a part of the device, provided with a modifi d form of mounting.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of the rack-em gaging bolt, with the cover removed.
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 4-4. of Fig. 3.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, the numeral 1 represents a wall having a doorway therein and a door 2 hingedly attached thereto in the usual mann r. A support 4 is horizontally attached above the door, on the wall 1, the center of said support being in a plane directly above the axis about which the door swings. A semi-circular rack 5 extends outward from the support, the latter forming a diameter of the circle of which the rack is a part. Teeth 6 are mounted on the underside of the rack, being separated by spaces 7 A bolt 12 is slidably mounted in a casing 8 on the upper edge of the door 2, and is adapted to engage the rack between adjacent teeth 6, that is, in the spaces 7. A chain 9 is attached to the lower end 11 of the bolt, whereby the latter may be manipulated. A screw 10 is pivotally mounted in the base 8 of the frame 8, and a-block 13 Specification of Letters Patent.

loosely surrounds the screw and is slidably located within the slot 3 (Fig. 3) in the bolt 12. A wing handle or grip 10 is provided on the end of the screw 10, and the cover 8" lies between the handle 10 and the bolt 12, so that, by screwing down the handle, the cover 8 will tighten against the bolt and thereby lock it against slidable motion.
A portion of the bolt 12 is cut away near the lower end to provide a shoulder from which a pin 14: projects, and a coiled spring 15 surrounds the pin and is secured at the lower end of the frame 8, the spring normally pressing the bolt upward against the rack 5. In Fig. 2 I have illustrated vertical supports 16 in place of the single horizontal support 4.
The operation of the device is apparent. hen it is desired to open the door to a desired position, the chain 9 is pulled so as to disengage the bolt 12 from the rack 5, and the door is then opened to the aforementioned position, whence the chain is released and the bolt will. rise into engagement with the rack. If, then, it is desired to lock the bolt so that a child or other irresponsible person cannot tamper with it, the hon dle 10 is turned so as to screw the cover 8 lown against the bolt 12, preventing slidable motion of the latter.
I claim:
A device of the class described comprising a substantially semi-circular rack sup ported above a hinged door, a slotted bolt slidably supported on said door and adapted to engage said rack, a frame containing said bolt, a clamp screw mounted in said frame passing through the slot, whereby said bolt may be held in raised or lowered position, and means for manipulating said bolt.
In witness whereof I aflix my signature.
ANTANAS W'ALUS.
