To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ANTONY DUDYNSKY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Joints for Structures, of'whichfthe following is aspecification.
This invention relates to a joint for beams, rails, or the like whereby the same may be joined end to end.
The invention has for an object to provide a simple joint structure of great strength the parts of which are formed integral with the rail or beam ends.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, references will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a plan view showing a pair of rail ends provided with my improved joint structure.
Fig. 2 is a side view thereof.
Fig. 3 is an end view of one of the rails.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section on the line 14 of Fig. 3 showing the rail ends assembled.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing the invention applied to I-beams.
Fig. 6 is a similar view showing the in vention applied to channel beams.
Referring now to Figs. 1 and 2, the reference numerals 10 and 11 indicate a pair of adjacent rail .ends. According to the present invention the rail end 10 has the web thereof thickened on both sides for a distance rearwardly from the extremity of the rail as at 12.
In this thickened web portion is provided a socket formed by slotting the rail up wardly from the base as at 13. The top wall of this socket is upwardly offset as at 13 less than midway toward its rear or inner end, presenting a rearwardly facing shoulder 15, the top wall curving downwardly at its rear end as at 13. The bottom of the slot terminates at its rear end somewhat short of the extreme rear end of the slot, presenting a. short vertical wall or shoulder 16 at its rear end and then curving upwardlv and rearwardly as at 13 to meet downwardly curved top wall portion 13*.
The rail 11 is formed with a complementary tongue adapted to engage in this socket and comprising a main body 20 projected Specification of Letters Patent.

forward from the web of the rail 11 and provided with a raised forward portion 20 adapted to engage in the offset portion 13 of the socket 13 and presenting a rearwardly facing shoulder 21 adapted to abut against the shoulder 15.
This tongue also has the top edge of the raised portion curved downwardly as at 20 and presents a forwardly facing shoulder 23 and an upwardly and forwardly curved face 20 complementary to the shoulder 16 and face 13 of the socket and adapted to engage the same. The faces 13 and 20 are curved concentric to the point of the shoulders 16 and 23. a
In assembling the two rails the tongue 20 is pushed forwardly into the slot 13 with the rail end 11 inclined to the rail end 10 as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 41 until the shoulder 23 abuts against the shoulder 16, in which position the points of the shoulders 15 and 21 register. The rail end 11 is then swung upward, upon the points of shoulders 23 and 16 as a pivot, into place, the surface 2 a riding along the surface 13 the two rails being thus securely locked together by shoulders 15 and 21.
In Fig. 5 I have shown the invention applied to a pair of I-beams 25 and 26 the tongue being indicated generally at 27 and the socket at 28.
In Fig. 6 I have shown the invention applied to a pair of channel beams 30 and 31, the tongue being indicated at 32 in position in the socket.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:
A pair of rail or beam members to be j oined'one of which is slotted inwardly from one side at the end, the rear portion of said slot being offset to present a shoulder, the slot at the said side of the member terminating short of the extreme rear end of the in ner portion of the slot and presenting a short vertical shoulder. the extremity of the inner wall of said offset portion of the slot being curved concentric to the outer point of said last shoulder, the lower wall curving concavely upward to the rear end of the slot, and complementary tongue formed on the other of said members and adapted to engage in said slot.
