To all whom it may concern Be it lmown that I, ALFRED COTTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Stack- Dampers, of which the following is a full, clear, and .exact description, such as will enable others. skilled intheart to which it appertainsto make and use the same.
This invention relates to dampersof the kind that are used for cutting off communication between a-flue,.stack or chimney and a chamber or passageway from which or through which gasesescape into said flue when the damper is open.
The main object of the invention is to provide an efficient damper for flues, stacks or chimneys that is of simple design, easy to operate and inexpensive to manufacture and install. r r 1 Another object is to provide a practicable damper for use in apparatus: of the kind wherein waste heat is used to operate a boiler, that is compact and of such design that it is not liable to become inoperative through warping or. lack of frequent use. Other objects and desirable features of my invention will be hereinafter pointed out.
I: have hereinv illustrated my invention embodied in a damper'that is used for normally'cutting ofi' communication between a stack and a gas passageway or chamber that is connected up with a boiler in such a manner that the boiler can be heated by waste gases from said passageway, said damper being'adaptedfto be opened when the boiler is cut out of service, so as to cause the waste gases to pass from said passageway or chamber into the stack which the damper controls. I wish it to be underst0od,..however, that my invention is not limited'to a damper for use in an apparatus of the particular kind shown or to a damper of'the particular construction and arrangement herein described. Referring to Figs. 1 to 3 of the drawings which illustrate my invention applied to a square chimney or stack, A designates a gas chamber herein illustrated as a Cement kiln, B designates a boiler that is adapted to be operated by'the waste gases from the chamber or kiln A, C designates a verticallydisposed stack through which the gases from the chamber A escape when the boiler B is not in service, D designates a fan or other suitable suction device for causing the waste gases from the chamber A to circulate over the heating surface of the boiler B and E designates the stack from which the gases escape from the boiler. The kiln A is normally cut off from the stack C by means of a damper F that can be constructed and arranged in various ways with out departing from the spirit of my invention. In the apparatus illustrated in Figs. 1. to 3 the chamber A discharges into a transverse flue or passageway G that is connected with the boiler B by means of a flue H. The stack C is arranged at one side of the point where'the chamber A and flue H connect with the transverse flue G and said transverse flue connects with the stack C at the lower end of same below the damper F,
the kiln A to enter the transverse flue G, then dive downwardly to the inlet 1 at the lower end of the stack C and thence upwardly through said stack, the gases takmg this path on account of the suction that the stack C exerts on the transverse flue or passageway G into which the kiln discharges.
A practical damper for the purpose mentioned, namely, a damper that is intended to 2 of cylindrical form that are adapted to be slid endwise into the stack C through an opening 3 at one side of same onto a supporting means and then rolled sidewise or laterally from the center of the stack, as shown in Fig. 1, said elements 2 extending parallel to each other and cooperating with each other to form a horizontally-disposed partition in the stack C. If desired, the closure formed by the members 2 can be rendered more effective by spreading a layer 'of-sand or ashes over said members 2, as
indicated by the reference character 4; in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. The mean's'thatsupports the removable damper elements-2 can be formed in various ways, but I prefer to arrange horizontal ledges 5 on the inside of the stack at the front and-rear sides of same with their upper edges flush with a supporting arch 6, as shown in Fig. 2, said ledges serving as supports for the ends of the removable damper elements 2. The damperelements 2 may consist of cylindrical shaped members formed of fire clay or other suitable refractory material, as shown in Fig. 5, and in some cases it is prcticable to use pieces of metal pipe, such as old boiler tubes, as shown'in Fig. 4, to form the damper F; for example, in cement plants where thereis enough vacuum below the damper F to insure suflicient air leaking downwardly between the damper elements to. keep them cool. 'Each of the damper elements may be provided witha ring or other suitable device 2, as shownin Fig, 4, or 2 as shown inFig. 5, arranged at one or both ends 'of same inwhich the end'of a hooked rod can be inserted to facilitate withdrawal of the damper elements, said damper elements being adaptedto be rolled toward'the center of the stack and then slid endwise along the supporting arch 6' out of the opening 3 in thestack when it is desired to open the damper. In urgent cases the damper elements 2 may be drawn sufliciently toward the opening 3' in the stack to allow them to drop off the supporting ledges down into-the bottom of the stack. In 'Figs. 6, 7 and 8 of the drawings ,1 have illustrated my invention applied to a round chimney or stack. The stack C is provided on its interior with front and rear ledges 5 on which the end portions of the damper elements'2 rest and a supporting arch 6 arranged in alinement with the opening 3 in the front side of the stack through which the damper elements are introduced. Horizontally disposed ledges 5 are "arranged at thexsides of the stack, aS shown in Flgs. 6 and7, so as to fill the spaces between the end damper elements 2 and the adjacent portions of the side Wall of thestack and the top faces ofvsaid side ledges 5 are preferably madea trifle higher than the top faces of the ledges 5 on which the end portions of the damper elements rest, so as to form stops against-which the end damper'elements strike when they are moved, laterally into operative position; If desired, the rear ledge 5, on which the rear end portions of the damper elements rest can also be provided with a raised portion, as shown in Fig. 8, ,soas to "form a stop against which the rear ends of the'damper elements strike when they are introduced into the stack, thereby preventing the damper elements from being pushed inwardly so far that the front ends of same will not rest properly on the front ledge 5 when said damper elements are rolled laterally into operative position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by'Letters Patent, is: T f 1.- A vertically-disposed stacker flue having a sideppening therein, a supporting structure 7 arranged on the inside of said stack, and a plurality of cylindrical'shapedon said ledges.

A vertical stack .or. flue providedwith an opening, a supporting archin said stack and arranged in I proximity to said-opening, ledges in thestackarranged at substantially right angles to said supportingarch, and a plurality of, cylindrical-shaped-damper. elenients that are adapted to :be introduced endwise into said stack on saidpsupporting then-rolled laterally into operative position 7 arch and then rolled laterally on said ledges so as to form a removable partition in the stack.

A vertical stack or flue provided with an opening, ledges arranged inside of said stack in proximity to said opening, cylindrical shaped damper elements arranged in said stack in parallel relation to each other with their ends supported on said ledges, and side ledges on the inside of the stack ex- 10 tending parallel with said damper elements and pro ec ting higher than the ledges on which the ends of the damper elements rest.
