PRINTING-PRESS INKING-ROLLER TRUCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 1, 1921.
Application filed March 19, 1921. Serial No. 453,836.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LLEROY J. WARNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Chicago, in the county of Lake and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing-Press Inking-Roller Trucks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention pertains to certain features of betterment in the rollers or wheels of the trucks for the inking-rollers of printingpresses and concerns more particularly rollers of the expansible and contractible type, whereby suitable and appropriate adjust ment of their sizes or diameters, such'relation of the inking-rollers to the form may readily be made as is best fitted and proper for the work in hand and for the preservation of the comparatively-easily injured inkin rollers of relatively-soft composition.
?By providing suitable truck rollers capable of variation as to size or caliber, and hence having the capacity for modifying the adjustment of the inking-rollers with reference to the printing-form, mutilation and cutting of the inking-rollers, particularly with rule work, is easily avoided, and there is no occasion for building up the tracks or increasing the size of the truck rollers by crude and inefficient means to secure the proper distance between the inking-rollers and the type or printing-form.
Also by employing composition truck rollers or wheels there is no danger of their slipping or sliding on the tracks thus avoiding the production of undue wear on the tracks and the possibility of the rollers damaged or injured because of such objectionable sliding action.
These are a few only of the the several advantages accruing from the use of trucks embodying the structural features of this invention and possessing its desirable, improved, functional characteristics.
Other important advantages will be found by those skilled in the art to arise from the commercial employment of devices or appliances incorporating this invention.
In order that the invention may be fully understood, in the accompanying drawing I have illustrated a preferred and desirable embodiment of the same, to which drawing reference should be had in connection with the following detailed description, it being borne 1n mind that the same reference characters designate'like parts throughout the several views.

The improved and novel style of roller illustrated comprises a main-body or sleeve member 11 of general cylindrical shape adapted to fit over a shaft, axle, or rod 12, being splined to or free to revolve thereon, as may be preferred.
In the present instance, the shaft is equipped with a key 13 and the sleeve with a keyway or groove 14 adapted to receive it.
Externally, at about midway of its length, the sleeve has an outstanding flange, wall, or disk portion 15 supplied with a plurality of pins or lugs 16 projecting from one plane face thereof disposed at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the sleeve, such pins or lugs being accommodated or received in short radial grooves 17 in one side face of an expansible and contractible elastic or resilient ring 18 having an outer active cylindrical face 19 adapted to roll or travel on the track, not shown.
The purpose of such pin and slot connection between these elements is to effectually prevent the turning of the ring relatively to the flange so that the partsnecessarily revolve together without the possibility of creasing of the ring around the sleeve.
Internally, the composition ring member 18, which may be made of any of the well known compositions, has a beveled or frustoconical face 20 bearing on the similar external surface of an adjustable cone 21, internally screw threaded for a portion of its length, such thread being screwed on to the threaded part of the sleeve 11 on the same side of the abutment wall 15 as the protruding or projecting pins 16.
The outer side face of element 21 is equipped with a number of cavities or recesses 22 designed for the applicationof a spannerwrench of suitable construction by means of which this conical or tapered adjustment member may be turned to force it bear against and vconfine and prevent'fiaring' of the corresponding outer portion of the elastic ring or roller 18 between itself and the opposed disk port-ion 15, the collar having a plurality of recesses, 24, by means of which it may be turned and adjusted.
It will be seen that by turning the tapered part or cone 21, it may be fed along the sleeve 11. and cause the expansion or permit the natural and;automatic contraction of the roller part 18' which travels on the track, thereby increasing or descreasing itsdiameter and circumference as occasion demands for the proper performance of the function of-the inlring-rollers, not shown, that is to say such adjustment of the size of the roller carries the inking-roller toward and from the type or form which it cooperates.
It will be seen, therefore,that the main body or sleeve has an outstandingabutment wall or rib having a plane surface normal or pendicular to the longitudinalaxis of the sleeve, and that the pliable or elasticcomposition ring as a like plane face similarly disposed, adapted to bear on such abutment or, buttress wall surface, relative angular movement between the two elements being prevented by the pin and groove connection, which by'reason of the radial arrangement of the grooves in no way interferes with the change in size of the ring.
Thus such rib or wall presents an effective member against which the rubber composition ring may pr'ess'by reason of the action of the cone, WhlCl1, Off CO1l1S6, due torthe slope or inclination of its active face, not
only expands the ring, but also holds it firmly against such end wall or abutment.
Since the collar 23 has a capacity for lengthwise adjustment on and independently of the cone, it can be brought to any desired position to properly and adequately confine between itself and the abutment wall that outer portion of the elastic ring beyond the cone, whereby it may be effectively and efficiently employed to, prevent flaring or spreading of such part of the ring.
Obviously by the appliance shown and described, any desired adjustment of the roller or wheel may be readily secured by manipulation of the movable part, the rubber composition, regardless of the size of the roller, whether expanded or contracted being properly confinedand restricted between adjustable elements. The invention is not limited and restricted to the precise and exact details of construction because these may be modified within comparatively wide limits without departure from the substance and essence of the invention and without the sacrifice of any of its substantial benefits and advantages.
I claim:
1. A roller construction for inking-roller trucks of printing-presses, comprising in combination a main-body having an abutment wall, an expansible and contractible ringbearing atone side against said abutment wall and having a conical inner surface, an adjustable cone coacting with the conical surface of said ring, and a confining face, an adjustable cone coacting with the conical surface of said ring, and a confining collar arranged to bear on the opposite side wall of said ring. a V

A roller construction for inking-roller trucks of printing-presses, comprising in combination a main-body having an abutment wall, an expansible and contractible ring bearing atone side against said abutment wall and having a conical inner sur- 2 face, means to prevent turning of said ring relatively to s'aidmain-body, an adjustable cone coacting with the conical surface ofsaid ring, and a confining collar adjustable toward and from said ring independently of said cone and arranged to bear on the opposite side wall of said ring.
4-. A rollerconstruction for inking-roller trucks of print ng-presses comprising in combination an externally-threaded sleeve having an outstanding abutmentwall, an expansible and contractible ring bearing at one side against said abutment wall and having an inner conical surface, means to prevent turning of said ring relatively to said wall, an adjustable cone having a screw-threaded connection with said sleeve coacting with the conical surface of said ring, and an adustable collar having a screw threaded connection with said cone arranged to bear against the opposite side of said ring.
