INKING-ROLL TRUCK.

Be it known that We, FREEMAN J. BRAD- LEY and MERRILL C. DIONNE, citizens of the United States, and residents of Fostoria, in the county of Seneca and State of Ohio, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Inking-Roll Trucks, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in inlring roll trucks, being more particularly in the nature of an expansible roller arranged to be fitted on each of the trunnions of an inking roll, and it consists in the con structions, combinations and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of our invention is to provide an inking roll truck including a relatively xed expansion rim With a relatively movf able expansion cone, a plurality of expanding segments located between these members, bein adapted to increase the diameter o f ya tire ocated between the cone and the rim.

In carrying out our invention, We provide an expansion cone 1,Which has a bore 2 Ydisposed coaxially thereof. The cone 1- includes an annular shoulder 3. The body portion of the member 1 is in the shape of a irustum of a gone and .provides the conical surface 4jfrom'ivhic`h the member 1 obtains its name.
The expansion cone l is further reduced beyond the summit of the frustuprir 4 and forms an annular shoulder 5. The expan sion cone 1 is still further reduced beyond the annular shoulder 5, and this reduced ortion is threaded as at 6, to receive the lock and jam nuts 7 and 8 respectively.

The expansion segments are Wedge-shaped and the bases of the segments are substantially on the same plane with the summit of the frustum 4. - The Operation of the device is as follows:

This leads to a consideration of the purpose of the expansible rim or tire of the ot the device is that of a ,said rim having 1 sion cone movable toward the rim and truck. Ordinarily the tire of the truck and the inking roll are of the same diameter. Varying weather conditions cause the inking roll to swell to a greater or lesser dcree. Should the swollen inking roll now Ee run over a torni having more or less vertical rulings for printing the lines on the paper, the surface of the swollen roll may be cut and seriously damaged. t
It is novi7 that the truck tire or run is adjusted to compensate for the swollen inkin roll. The Wrench is taken and applied to the lock and jam nuts 7 and 8 The nut 7 is turned' to draw the expansion cone 1 toward the expansion rim l() wherein the expansion segments 9 are displaced radially and the tire of the truck consist` ing of the expansion rings 13, is expanded to the same diameter' of the swollen inking roll. To eifeet this adjustment, it is not necessary for Vthe printer to leave the feed ing position at the press. A very fine adjustment can be made With this device: n variation of a thousandth of an inch being easily obtained.
As the expansion cone 1 is forced toward the rim 10, the summit of the frustuni #l moves into the conical recess 11, and the expansion segments 9 are forced radially outward by reason of the abutment of .the
bases of the segments on the expansion rim,
and the action of the cone 4 on the wedge- 'shaped surfaces of the segments.

In an inking roll truck, an expansion rini having a surface perpendicular to the axis of the inking roll to forni an abutment, said surface having a conical recess and a counter-bore, the periphery of the expansion rim being rabbeted at one edge to provide an annular shoulder, an expansion cone consisting of a truste-conical body having a reduction at the summit of the cone to leave an annular shoulder movable in the counterbore, and a threaded portion projecting be yond said shoulder and through said counter-bore, the end of the expansion cone being receivable in the conical recess when the parts are screwed together, the peripheral ed e of the expansion cone having a rabbetec portion to provide an annular shoulder, a plurality of wedge-shaped expansion segments engaging the expansion rim abutment at the bases, the eX osed ortions of said segments normally lying ush with the peripheral portions of said rim and said cone beneath said annular shoulders, a tire including a plurality of split rings encirclin said segments and disposedin the space etween said annular shoulders, 4said shoulders preventing the rings from sipping off, and lock and jam nuts on the threaded portion of said expansion cone to draw the cone toward the rim to expand the rings;
