6 A a NVVEIVJTOA? I a a? fl'rrok/vay UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
APPARATUS FOR CLEANSING FELTS.
Application filed. April 29, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD D. BENNETT, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Pulaski, in the county of Oswego, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in the Apparatu for Cleansing Felts, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to an improved method of and apparatus for cleaning felts used in paper making machines.
These felts are rather thick and heavy, and after a short period of use become clogged with paper fiber and other foreign matter to such an extent as to renderthem inefficient for further use, and in some instances are laid aside as waste or subjected to a laborious, expensive and time consuming method of cleansing, and the main object of my present invention is to provide simple and efiicient means whereby the felts may be thoroughly cleaned from foreign matter while in the machine or at least while laid flatwise upon suitable supports.
In other words, I have sought to blow the foreign matter from the felt by steam or other fluid under pressure entering a hollow perforated plate which is movable at will across one or bot-h surfaces (usually the lower surface) in such manner that jets of steam will be projected from said perforations through the felt preferably in a direction opposite to that by which the paper fiber or other foreign matter enters the pores of the felt.
Other objects and uses relating to specific parts of the apparatus will be brought out in the following description:
In the drawings,-
Figure 1 is a perspective View of a device for carrying out the object of my invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of the same device as applied to a piece of felt shown by dotted lines.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 25, 1921.
Serial No. 293,484.
As illustrated, the apparatus consists of a hollow rectangular plate -l having one side thereof provided with a series of perforations -2, the remaining walls being imperforate except that one end thereof is provided with an inlet 3- to which is connected a rigid supply pipe section -4- having a flexible extension -5 adapted to be connected to a source of supply such as steam or other fluid under pressure.
Secured to the opposite end of the plate l is an extension 6-- which together with the pipe 4E constitute handles by which the plate 1- may be moved across the felt as -A- shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2 with its perforated side adjacent said felt so that the steam entering the interior of the plate 1- will be projected in numerous fine jets through the pores of the felt to expel any fiber or other foreign matter which may have lodged therein.
In Fig. 2, the device is shown as applied to the upper surface of the felt but obviously may be reversed and applied to the lower face thereof for blowing the steam through the felt from opposite directions, when necessary, to assure a perfect cleansing of the felt.
JV hat I claim is:
An apparatus for cleaning paper machine felts comprising a substantially rectangular box having a flat foraminous side and means for conducting a cleansing fluid under pressure into said box and through the foramina thereof, said box being portable and movable along and against the side of the felt opposite that into which the material to be removed enters.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 25th day of April, 1919.
EDWARD D. BENNETT.
Witnesses E. L. CLARK, C. Box.
