To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, HARRY HEADY, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Cleaning Sandpaper or Sandlielts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in apparatus for cleaning sand paper or sand belts, especially those used on machines and which have become choked by gathering fine particles of the material on which it operates.

The object of the invention is to prolong the usefulness of the sand paper or sand belt by removing therefrom the embedded saw dust.

Another object of the invention is to provide an apparatus for washing saw dust from sand paper or sand belts and thereby restore its effectiveness.

A further object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive machine which will thoroughly clean sand paper or sand belts of collected saw dust without destroying its value by removing the sand.

With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in certain combination and arrangement of the parts as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the novel features thereof being pointed out in the appended claims.

ln the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts, Figure l is a perspective view embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view of same; Fig. 3 is an end view, and Fig. 4: illustrates details of a spring catch.

Referring to the drawing, in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of my apparatus, consisting of a frame 1, having corner supporting legs 2, which are connected by suitable braces 3.

The ends of the frame 1 are provided with centrally located bearings 4 for receiving trunnions 5, secured to the under side of a table 6, having vertical transversely extending end strips 7. Secured to one of the trunnions 5 is a cog-wheel 8, which is engaged by dogs 9 pivoted to the frame on opposite sides of said cog-wheel to hold the table 6,

which may be rocked by means of a crank lever 10, in any adjusted position.

The table (3 is preferably covered with sheet Zinc or copper, and is provided with a plurality of spring catches adapted to securely hold sand paper or a sand belt 11 during the washing operation. The spring catches consist of flat curved springs 12, having slots 13, which allow them to be moved loi'igitudinally on pins 1 projecting from the table, for holding different widths of sand paper. Pivotally connected to the pins are buttons 15, having bosses 16 on their under sides for engaging the springs as the buttons are turned to cause said springs to clam said sand paper or sand belt.

A centrally located spraying pipe 17, pro vided with apertures 18, extends longitudinally just above the surface of the table 6, and is connected to a pipe 19, provided with a valve :20, leading to the lower portion of a hot water supply tank 21, adapted to be heated in any suitable manner. The tank 21 is provided near its top with an inlet pipe 22 and an overflow pipe 23.

On each side of the frame 1 are inclined sheet metal troughs 24:, having connected to their lower ends pipes 25 leading to a waste pipe 6, for carrying away the water caught by the troughs from the table 6 and from the water overflow pipe 23.

Extending from the lower portion of the tank 21 is a short pipe 27, furnished with a valve 28, and having connected thereto a flexible tube 29, to which is attached a triangular shaped spraying nozzle 30, terminating in an elongated narrow mouth 31.

In order to wash sand paper or sand belts by the herein described apparatus, the same is secured to the table by the spring catches, and the valve 20 opened to allow the hot 'ater from the supply tank to flow over it. The table is rocked by means of the crank lever 10, so that the loose saw dust freed from the sand paper will be washed into the troughs 24. The table may be held in an adjusted position by the dogs 9 engaging the cog wheels 8, and the spraying nozzle 30 manipulated to further wash the saw dust from the sand paper or sand belt. When the sand paper or sand belt has been thoroughly washed, it is removed from the table and dried in any suitable manner.

Although the elements herein shown and described are well adapted to serve the purposes for which they are intended, it is to be understood that slight changes may be made in the precise construction set forth Without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Having thus fully described my invention,

What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In an apparatus for cleaning sand pa per, the combination of a table, means on the table for holding the sand paper and means for spraying fluid over the sand paper.

2. In an apparatus for cleaning sand pa- 3per, the combination of a table, spring catches on the table for holding the sand paper, a hot Water storage tank, and a pipe leading from the tank for spraying hot Water over the sand paper.

In an apparatus for cleaning sand paper and sand belts, the combination of a table tiltably mount-ed on the frame and spring catches on the table for holding the sand paper or sand belt, a hot Water supply 'tank, and a pipe leading from the tank and extending longitudinally above the table for spraying the sand paper or sand belt.

hot water supply tank, and a pipe leading from the tank and extending longitudinally above the table for spraying the sand paper or sand belt.

5. In an apparatus for cleaning sand paper or sand belts, the combination of a table tiltably mounted on a frame, spring catches on the table for holding the sand paper or "sand belt, a hot Water supply tank, a pipe leading from the tank and extending longitudinally above the table for spraying the sand paper or sand belt, troughs at the sides of the table for catching the water from the ply tank,

table, and Waste pipes leading from the troughs.

6. In an apparatus for cleaning sand paper or sand belts, the combination of a table tiltably mounted on a frame, spring catches on the table for holding the sand paper or sand belt, a hot Water supply tank, apipe leading from the tank and extending longitudinally above the table for spraying the sand paper or sand belt, troughs at the sides of the table for catching the Waste Water from the table, an overflow pipe leading from the tank to one of said troughs, Waste pipes leading from the troughs, a second pipe leading from the supply tank, a flexible tube connected to the second pipe, and a spraying nozzle on the flexible tube.

7. In an apparatus for cleaning sand paper and sand belts, the combination of a table having trunnions rotatably mounted on a frame, a crank lever applied to one of the trunnions for tilting the table, a cog-Wheel on the trunnion, dogs pivoted on the frame for engaging the cog-Wheel to hold the table in locked position, pins projecting from the table, curved springs having slots for receiving the pins, buttons pivotally mounted on the pins adapted to exert pressure on the springs when being turned, a hot water supa pipe leading from the tank and extending longitudinally above the table for spraying the sand paper or sand belt, troughs at the sides of the table for catching the Water from the table, an overflow pipe leading from the supply tank to one of said troughs, Waste pipes leading from the troughs, a second pipe leading from the supply tank, a flexible tube connected to the second pipe, and a spraying nozzle on the flexible tube.
