FRANK R. BELLUCHE, OF MAN SFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO UNITED PRINTING MACHINERY COMPANY,

0F BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, A COR- ADJUSTABLE FEEDING-TABIJE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 25, 1921.
To all wlw/m. t may concern.:
Be it known that I, FRANK It. BELLUCHE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mansfield, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Feeding-Tables; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
This invention is a novel improvement 1n means for feeding sheets of paper to mechanisms for operating thereon; and is particularly designed for use in connection with printing presses having a rotary impression cylinder to which the sheets are to be fed from a feed board or table, either automatically or by hand. Y
The primary object of the invention is to enable the feed board to be readily moved out of the way when it is desired to obtain access to the impression cylinder for any purpose such as making ready. To this end I mount the feed board in such manner that it can be shifted endwise inward over the cylinder and toward the delivery end of the press, so that the pressman can have unobstructed access to the cylinder at the feed end of the press.
A secondary object of the invention is to also mount upon such movable feed board some or all ofthe various devices for feeding sheets to the cylinder; for front registering the sheet; for side registering the sheet; the front sheet stops, etc., so that when the feed board is shifted out of the way such of the sheet manipulating or controlling devices as are mounted on said board will also be moved therewith out of the way of the pressman, thus facilitating making ready the cylinder or forms at the feed end ofthe press.
Other minor objects of the invention and advantages thereof will be hereinafter mentioned.
In the accompanying drawings I have conventionally illustrated part of a printing press, and a feed board connected therewith so as to be adjustable outv of the way in the manner above stated; and I have also con.-- ventoually illustrated. varices. sheet. .feeding and registering devices, and sheet stops or gages, mounted on the feed board and adjustable therewith.
I will explain the invention with refer* ence to the said drawings to enable others skilled in the art to adapt and use the invention; and in the appended claims summarize the essentials of the invention and the novel details of construction and novel combinations of parts for all of which protection is desired.
In said drawings:
Figure l is a conventional side elevation of part ofa printing press and an adjustable feed board mounted in accordance with the invention, the feed board being shown in operative position in full lines and shown in dotted lines moved out of the way to permit access to the cylinder.
Fig. 2 is a similar view illustratin another embodiment or adaptation of the invention.
t In the drawings l represents the impression cylinder of a sheet printing press which may be of any desired kind. The cylinder is provided with grippers to take the sheets in the usual manner. This 'impression cylinder may cooperate with'a plate cylinder, or other suitable member carrying the printing surfaces against which the sheets are to be impressed by the impression cylinder. In the drawings the press indicated is a bed and cylinder printing press, which may be of any well known type.
At one side of the cylinder l is the feed board 2, which may be of any desired type, and is so mounted that it can be readill moved endwise from the operative or feeding position indicated in full lines in Figs, l and 2, to inoperative or out of the way position; (indicated in dotted lines in Figs. l and 2).
In Fig. l this feed boa-rd is shown as supported by rollers 2a at its front end upon supporting bars 9 attached to the side members of the press and which extend rearwardly from the cylinder toward the delivery end of the press.
The outer end of the feed board may be supported in any suitable mannerso that it can be bodily moved as described. As
'shown in Fig. 1th@ outer end 'of the feed board lso as to be -capable of such adjustments.
The feed board is normally supported at the feed end of the press as shown in full lines (Figs. 1 and 2), so that the sheets can be supplied directly from the'feed board to the'impression cylinder in the usual manner; but when the operator desires to make ready the press, or to get at the impression cylinder, heV can move the feed board endwise directly over the cylinder 1 into Vthe out of the way position, indicated in dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2, thus giving the operator f free access to the cylinder from the feed end of the press. feed board I consider broadly novel.
A subsidiary feature of the invention, but one of material practical importance, is havingthe feed board carry some or all of the sheet feeding and controlling devices.
As indicated-in Fig. 1, the front guides or sheet-stops t may be operatively supported upon the inner end of the feed board and K be removable therewith into or out of operative position. Also as indicated in Fig. 1, thefeed board may carry the bank or pile of sheets S; a sheet separator 5; bank clamps 6; bank stop 7 a reciprocating sheet feeder 8; and suitable side registering devices 11; and also means such as tapes 10, for feeding the bank of sheetsV forward against the bank stop 7. Each and all of such devices as are'mounted upon the feed.
board should be suitably timed and oper ated.
The general arrangement of the sheet handling mechanisms such as indicated in Fig.-
1.on the feed board however may be such as shown in my application (Case 6415);
but the particular construction of such devices forms no part of the present invention; and as there are various other such devices known to thosepfamiliar with the art that could be readily mounted on the feed board. they are not described nor shown in detail.
Itcwill be-Seen that such of the sheet handling devices as are operatively mounted upon the feed board lwill be moved there' with into 0r` out of operative position. `I consider the invention to include in itsscope mounting upon the .feedA board itself (so vas tombe movable therewith) vany one or'more ofthe mechanisms forA feedingthe sheet, or
This mode of adjusting the' for` positioning the sheet or for front registering the sheet, or for side registering the sheet. Obviously having such devices mounted 0n and movable with the feed board into or outof operative Vposition will greatly vfacilitate the operation of making ready' the press or impression cylinder.
In the form illustrated in Fig. 2 the rear end of the feed board 2 is shown as supported by levers 3 pivoted at?)0 to the frame and at 31 to the board, and in this instance the feed'boa'rd instead of carrying the pile or bank of sheets (as indicated in Fig. 1) may carry suitable mechanism to conveythe sheets from a sheet feeder P of any suit-able kind to the cylinder.
When the feed board shown in Fig. 2 is in operative position itis adapted tovv re? ceive sheets successively Vfrom the usual feeder P, by which the sheets are succes sively fed onto the-feed board. Y
The feed board inV Fig. 2 is-shown as pro-1 vided with coacting tapesV 10a-,10b that move the sheets forward thereon; although, any other suitable forwarding means may be used. The board shown in Fig. 2 may also carry the front sheet stops 4f, and Yside registering devices 11, if desired; and suchof these devices as are mounted on the feed board would be movable therewith from the position indicated in full lines in Fig. 2 to the position indicated Vdotted lines in Fig. 2. Y Y 7 l As stated, thedrawings simply conventionally illustrate the'4 invention, but from such drawings and the foregoing descrip-v tion anyone skilled in the art can understand the invention and readily adapt and. use the same. The essentials of the invention are (l) having the feed board longitudinally movable from operative positionat onel side of a cylinder to out of the position at the other side` of the cylinder; and (2) having such boardl carry oneV or more or all ofthe sheet separating devices,` sheet feeding devices, sheet registering devices, and sheet stops 0r gages'.
