IMPROVEMENT IN MEASURlNG-FUNNELS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139,496, dated June 3, 1873; application filed March 29, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, JOHN K. COHIC and DAVID H. SHARTZER, both of West Hempfield township, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have jointly invented a certain Improvement in Measuring-Funnels, of which the following is a specification:

The nature of our invention consists in combining the plunger or stopper rod with the handle in such a manner that, by simply drawing out two pins, the "essel will be cleared of all obstructions, so that it can be easily and thoroughly cleaned, frequently so needful, and yet so difficult to perform when as heretofore made.

The accompanying drawing illustrates the construction, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of all its parts in place. Fig. 2 shows the handle B and connections 0, D, E, F, and G detached.

The body A of the vessel is somewhat tapering, with a conic or dished bottom, in the center of which is the discharge-pipe H, the whole supported on three legs, I, as in other measuring-funnels of this class. 0n the upper rim, at sides opposite each other, there are perforated slotted bearings a to receive the slotted perforated ends I) of the handle B, which fit in and are secured on each side by a pin, P. This handle has a cross'brace, 0, connected to it, with a central head, which is perforated for the plunger-rod F. This rod has a flange or shoulder, e, and screw-ends, the upper being connected to the draw-ring D on the central head of the cross-brace G. A piece of gumelastic tubing, E, is slipped over the rod, and is held between the flange or shoulder e and under side of said head, and performs the office of a spring; the lower end of the rod F holds the elastic stopper G. made adjustable between washers and jam-nuts.

The appliances are thus easily detached for cleaning the vessel after having been used for molasses, oil, or other viscid and adherent fluids that require cleaning of the vessel. \Ve are not aware that this provision exists in measuring-funnels heretofore made, so as to detach the entire handle and stopper with its rod and connections, and thereby remove every obstruction. VVeare 'aware that rods and stoppers, held by springs and variously operated in measuring-funnels, are not new; nor do we claim these, separately considered, as our invention.
