Description

B. D. BARTON. BELT PULLEY AND TIGHTENER. APPLICATION FILED JAN. 24, 1920.
":IEIHHHHHEEE I o o Patented Oct. 25, 1921.
awmwtot TA Arm CFFIQ BEN D. BARTON, or LANSING, MICHIGAN.
BELT PULLEY AND' TIGHTENER.
Specificationof Letters Patent. Patented Oct. 25, 1921.
Application filed January 24, 1920. Serial No. 358,843.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, BEN D. BARTON, a citizen of the United States, residingv at Lansing, in the county of Ingham and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Belt'Pulleys and Tighteners, of which the following is a specification.
This" invention provides a for. use in connection with guide adapted a drive belt to enable the latter to be easily; quickly and conveniently adjusted to a tractor or analo.--
' gous source of IDOtIYG power generally used on the farm for driving machinery of various kinds and for different purposes.
Tractor having the drive'belt at the end are preferable to those having the belt pulley at theside, but difficulty is experienced in placing the belt in position andmarntaming proper tensionof the belt. The present invention enables the end arrangement of belt pulley to be successfully and conveniently utilized on all types of tractors and motive appliances adapted for farm use.
The drawings illustrate the preferred embodiment of my invention. However, it is to be understood that in adapting thesame to meet different conditions, various changes in the form proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invent on as claimed hereinafter. 7 Referring to the drawings hereto attached t Figure 1 is a detail view in side elevation of an end portion of a tractor provided with a belt guide attachment embodying the mvention,
Fig. 2 is an end View of the parts illustrated in Fig. 1 showing the drive belt in section. Correspondlng and llke parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in both views of the drawings.
The tractor designated by the numeral 1 may be of any construction and the same is typical of any motive power adapted for use on the farm; The numeral 2 designates the drive shaft of the engine and 3 the belt The drive shaft 2 is longitudinally disposed and projects be yond the end of the tractor and the projecting end receives the belt pulley 3.
1 In accordance with the present invention, a pair of frame members 4 and 5 are proruired position when vided-at each side of the tractor and the members are secured thereto in any convenient and substantial way. The members consist of bars which may be of any form. In the preferred construction, angle bars are utilized because of the strength afforded, consistent with lightness ofstructure. The members 5 constitute supports and the members 4 braces. The supporting members 5 have their lower ends stepped upon a close piece 6. of the, tractor frame work. The brace members 4 have hooks 7 at their lower rear ends which engage lateral extensions '8 of the frame work of the tractor. It will thus be understood that the attachment may be quickly and easily braced in position or removed as required. Castings or metal fittings 9 are attached to the upper ends of the members 4 and 5 and are formed with eyes which receive a transverse shaft 10. The castings or fittings 9 have theireye portions provided with set screws 11 whereby the parts 4 and 5. and 10 are secured in the reproperly adjusted. (ruide pulleys 12 are loosely mounted upon the transverse shaft 10 and receive the runs of the drive belt 13 belt pulley 3 and transmits motion from said pulley to the machine to be driven. The pulleys 3 and 12 are so disposed that a vertical plane passing through the center of the pulley 3 will touch the rear face of the pulley 12 thereby enabling the upright portions of the drive belt 13 to occupy a perpendicular position as indicated most clearly in Fig. l. The runs of the drive belt passing over the guide pulleys 12 are prevented from lateral displacement by means of guides 14, which consists 'of vertically disposed pins and sleeves mounted thereon. One guide 14 is disposed between the two runs of the drive belt and a guide 14 is located exteriorly to each of the runs. clearly in Fig. 2.
From the foregoing taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it will be understood that the invention provides an which passes around the This is indicated most or moved in a direction to increase the distance between the tractor and the .machine or part to be driven with the result that the drive belt i stretched and tenter specified comprising a pair of membersadapted to be disposed at each side 011a tractor ,or analogous motive power, themembers of each pair being angularly disposed so that one member constitutes a support and the other abrace, metal fittings at the upper ends of the members. each of the fitw of a belt upon said vpulleys and means for tings including an eye, a transverse shaft supported in the eyes. of themetal fittings,
means for ecuring the shaft to the-fittings and retaining the parts 1n ad usted position,
and guide pulleys loosely mounted upon the shaft. r
2. A belt guide attachment of the character specified comprising a-pair of members adapted to be disposed at each side of'a' tractor or analogous motive power, the membersof each pair being angularly disposed so that one memberconstitutes a support and the other a brace, metal eye fittingsvat the upper ends of the members, a transverse shaft supported in the eyes of the fittings,
set screws threaded into the eyes of the fittings for securingthe shaft and members in the required adjusted position, guide pulleys ter specified comprising a plurality of mem bers, a shaft carried by the outer ends of.
said members, pulleys loosely mountedrupon sald'shatt, vert cally arranged rollers mounted "upon said'shaft between and'tothe side of said pulleys for facilitating the retaining detachably securing said members to a tractor or analogous-motive power.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. 7
