FRANK WALKER SMITH, OF REDDITCH, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF TO THE ENFIELD CYCLE COMPANY, LIMITED, OF REDDITCH, ENGLAND.
OIL-PUMP FOR INTERNAL-COMBUSTION ENGINES.
Application filed .Tune 5,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK WALKER SMITH, a subject of the Kingdom of Great Britain, residing at Enfield Works, Redditch, in the county of Worcester, England, have invented certain Improvements in or Relating to Oil-Pumps for Internal-Combustion Engines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprises certain improvements in or relating to oil pumps for internal-combustion engines. According to the present invention the pump cylinder is adapted to oscillate about an axis located transversely to the axis of the said cylinder, and as a result of such oscillation the cylinder port is placed alternately in communication with the ingress and egress ports for the oil. In order to prevent leakage of these ingress and egress ports the pump cylinder is retained in relation to the said ports by a spring.
In order that this invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into practice, reference may be had to the appended explanatory drawings, upon which Figure 1 is a part sectional elevation illustrating an embodiment of the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan of the parts shown in Fig. 1 with certain elements removed.
In a convenient embodiment of the pres- Y ent invention, the pump cylinder takes the form of a drum-shaped body at having a cylindrical periphery adapted to enable the said drum-shaped member to oscillate within a correspondingly shaped recess or bearing in the frame of the engine. A diametric cylindrical opening 6 is drilled in the said drum-shaped member, said cylindrical opening being adapted to function as the pump cylinder. In this cylinder a plunger 0 is adapted to work, the said plunger being operated by a crank pin (Z driven in any appropriate manner by or from the timing gear of the engine. This crank pin is adapted to not only reciprocate the plunger 0 within the pump cylinder, but also to oscillate the drum-shaped member a in which the cylindrical pump chamber is drilled. At right angles to the pump chamber and at the end thereof remote from the crank pin a lateral port 6 is provided, and as a result of the oscillation of the drum-shaped mem- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 18, 1921. 1920. Serial No. 386,792.
ber this port is placed alternately into register with ingress and egress conduits f, g drilled in the frame or part in relation to whlch the drum-shaped member oscillates. These ingress and egress conduits are appropriately placed in communication with the supply and delivery conduits h, 2' for the o1 The drum-shaped member has a fiat face adapted to bear upon a corresponding flat bearing face provided in that part of the engine frame in relation to which the said drum-shaped member operates, and the said drum-shaped member is retained in oil-tight relationship with this stationary face (in which latter the stationary ingress and egress ports f, g are provided) by a spring j advantageously located on the side of the drum-shaped member remote from that on which the said bearing face occurs. This spring 7' may, for instance, operate between the said drum-shaped member a and a closure plate or member 70 which incloses a chamber Z in which the drum-shaped member, the pump plunger, and the crank pin operate. The spring may be a leaf spring having a central part; resting upon the drumshaped member, and two converging arms extending to the closure member, these converging arms being curved at their extremities in. directions away from each other. At a mid-point in the spring the latter may be formed with an indentation adapted to engage with a depression in the drum-shaped member to thereby locate the spring during the operation of the pump. The drumshaped member a may be formed with a depression which accommodates the midpart of the spring.
The chamber Z in which the oscillatory parts of the pump operate may assume the form of two substantially circular recesses, in one of which the drum-shaped member oscillates, and the other of which accommodates the crankpin (Z, these two recesses being connected by a narrower channel portion which accommodates the pump plunger.
WVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is An engine frame having a recess including a bearing seat the bottom of which pre sents a flat surface and is provided with inlet and outlet ports, a drum mounted for oscillation in said seat and on said fiat surface and having a bore and a port leading from said bore and arranged to register successively With said port of the frame, a rotary shaft having a crank pin projecting into said recess, a plunger operated by said crank pin and arranged to reciprocate in said bore, a cover for said recess, and a spring bearing between said cover and the top of said drum and serving to press the latter firmly against said flat surface.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
FRANK- WALKE SMITH.
